To be absolutely gutted with this paintwork?

I’ve had a painter and decorator in to paint a hall and stairs as well as the woodwork. The woodwork was going from stained wood to white so yes it is a pain in the backside type of job, but I really don’t think this is acceptable. I was here when he did the walls which were done really well but the woodwork is awful.
Where do I stand on payment? I’ve not paid him anything yet, but he wants me to BACS him £600 tonight.

wtaf? Was he drunk?
£450 is still too high, unless he did 45 walls.
And I agree about the, "your standards" comment. Such crap.

lidoshuffle · 05/10/2019 10:15

@123Holly I painted my stained staircases (two of them, lots of spindles and strings) and didn't rub them down to bare wood. I used Zinszer 123 which seals all the stain in. Two years later they are still looking good.

Andysbestadventure · 05/10/2019 10:18

Tell him you'll pay for the paint and 20% for effort, but for the rest he can jump.

lidoshuffle · 05/10/2019 10:18

Sorry, that should have been Zinsser BIN:

IWouldPreferNotTo · 05/10/2019 10:19

I wouldn't pay anything now. I'd get a quote to remedy his work and offset it against his bill and then see if I owe him anything.

DerektheWonderdog · 05/10/2019 10:25

That's bloody awful! My dog can paint better than that! I wouldn't pay him.

RandomMess · 05/10/2019 10:27

I reckon it's going to cost you more than £600 to rectify what he has done and I would tell him that and he needs to take the photos down!

1.Don't pay him anything

2.Get in contact with TS

3 Get a proper decorator on and ask for a written quote to remedy the shitty work... Think isn't a quick job.... Taking off all the rubbish paint. Why should you have to remedy his appalling work?? Presumably you commissioned him as you didn't have the time/skills to do it yourself.

Your time has a monetary value attached to it, too.

Don't forget to include damage to carpet.

My guess it's going to cost more than 600 to remedy.

Let TS know he's passing off someone else's work as his own.

Did he ask permission to take pics of your home??

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 05/10/2019 10:44

Oh yes and spindles /door handles etc etx

AhNowTed · 05/10/2019 10:51

He doesn't appear to have rubbed down nor primed a single surface.

That is absolutely dreadful.

123Holly · 05/10/2019 11:02

Lidoshuffle I actually bought zinser for him to use to save on some sanding down but he complained it was too watery and went and bought something else (just a normal undercoat I’m guessing) and used that without sanding anything down. So paintwork won’t last. Husband has paid him the £450 in fear of getting damaged cars in the drive or some other damage etc.
Fucking joke.
I’m more angry about it this morning.
I’ve left a bad review on his page and he’s saying everything would look like that when you magnify it. I haven’t magnified it. I just took the pictures.
Now that it’s paid I don’t have a leg to stand on. Could cry.

I painted our woodwork from stained to white and used the Zinsser BIN first. It's watery but it's meant to be! You have to wait a couple of days for it to 'cure' once applied. That paint job was a labour of love and certainly couldn't be achieved in an afternoon/day.

MargotLovedTom1 · 05/10/2019 11:19

That's the awful thing with things like this - they know where you live and you worry about things escalating Sad.

Thegullfromhull · 05/10/2019 11:21

That is such an unbelievably bad paint job.
I’d be gutted too.

sweetiepy · 05/10/2019 11:26

That looks like a job done by my husband! I once left him and his father to paint a room when we moved house. They couldn’t open the window so just painted it shut! I had to use a scraper to loosen the window and when I got it open all the paintwork stuck to the window frame and peeled off. I had to scrape all their paintwork off, then sand it back to the bare wood and start again.

The point is, that to do a proper job took me three times the time that it would have taken if it had been done properly the first time! It will likely cost more than the price you have been quoted to rectify the situation.
Do not pay anything until you have quotes by at least 2 professionals to rectify the situation. If, as I suspect, the quotes are higher than the £600, send these on to him and say you will take him to the small claims court unless he pays the excess.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 05/10/2019 11:53

I can’t believe your husband paid!

Rainbowknickers · 05/10/2019 12:02

I’ve painted most of the rooms in our house
(Too stressy to paint with my bloke-we end up rowing)
He’s slow but demands a perfect finish
I’m fast but much more slapdash
Even at my worst I wouldn’t have had a finish like that!
I’d be contacting trading standards and not paying a penny

GabsAlot · 05/10/2019 12:08

He shouldnt have paid but do leave a bad review anyway and ask for your pictures to be taken down

FrannySalinger · 05/10/2019 12:17

Why on earth did you pay Confused

MzHz · 05/10/2019 12:19

And the reason you’re so tight for money is your useless oh and his complete lack of balls. You’ll never have any quality of life with a man this weak.

No fucking way should he have paid a penny! You’re both now going to have to pay a fucking fortune to get this put right.

Your oh is officially an idiot! You had all the power in your hands and he gave it away.

NcNcNcNcNcNcNc · 05/10/2019 12:23

I cnat believe you paid!!

People like you are the reason chances like this exists, sorry if that sounds harsh but they know they can do a shit job and still get paid with no consequences and move on to the next person, carefree.

You should have fought and kicked up a fuss on every media outlet to warn the next poor sod he rips off.

NcNcNcNcNcNcNc · 05/10/2019 12:23

There's no way on earth my husband would have handed a penny over.

Ironfloor269 · 05/10/2019 12:33

My nine-year-old can do a better job than that! It's horrendous.

namechanged1455 · 05/10/2019 12:34

@123Holly Sorry but your husband is a sh.t bag and if my DH did that he would be living in the shed 😁
