Is anyone else experiencing a really bright night sky?

It looks like it’s more 5am here than midnight!

MovinOnUp · 04/10/2019 00:33

Nope, Black as pitch here! (Highlands of Scotland)

Spartak · 04/10/2019 00:34

turnthebiglightoff · 04/10/2019 00:34

Agree with v bright in london

turnthebiglightoff · 04/10/2019 00:39

I walked home through a non lit park at 10pm and could see everything; usually I use my phone torch!!

Ahhashaker · 04/10/2019 00:44

Took this at midnight.
We’re quite rural and normally it’s pitch black so was very surprised when I took the bins out that I didn’t even need a torch!

Does anyone know why the sky might be like this? I have quite bad anxiety and am now freaking out!! Too scared to google.

heath48 · 04/10/2019 01:06

I am in the Midlands, just looked out it’s inky black here.

My guess is it's really thick cloud (from around Lorenzo) that all the lights are reflecting off? Is that a thing?

Ginkypig · 04/10/2019 01:12

Is there a venue with lights like a sports venue in that direction? Or could there possibly be a fire happening?

SonggBird · 04/10/2019 01:12

Ah yeah I wondered that about the cloud and light reflecting making it almost an optical illusion. That does make sense.

QuestionableMouse · 04/10/2019 01:19

Same here in County Durham! My street is usually pitch black but I can see the cars and stuff quite clearly!

Inthemane · 04/10/2019 01:20

It is Skyglow I think...
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyglow

“Skyglow is significantly amplified by the presence of snow, and within and near urban areas when clouds are present.”

So the cloud thing sounds spot on! Very pretty almost pink colour here in London.

AutumnRose1 · 04/10/2019 01:23

Thanks for making me look OP

In London, mostly just white glow sitting under black cloud. Interesting looking. So the white glow part is like a narrow section at the horizon line.
