To sell my engagement and wedding rings?

Awaiting a divorce. My engagement ring and wedding ring are just sitting idle. Would it be awful to sell them?

I mean there's nothing stopping you, but I think you should probably wait until it's all over and done with first.

Walnutwhipster · 03/10/2019 22:20

No but unless they're something really special you will only get a fraction of what they cost.

DazedandConcerned · 03/10/2019 22:21

Unfortunately, resale value on jewellery is very poor. Have you considered having them repurposed into a different type of jewellery? I suppose whether you'd do that depends how bad the memories of the marriage are, how amicable the breakup was...

Orangedaisy · 03/10/2019 22:21

I sold mine and used the proceeds for return flights to the Caribbean. Do it!

Do you have kids? Would they want them in the future? But, if you need the cash then sell them.

HerRoyalNotness · 03/10/2019 22:21

Do you have DC you could give them to later? That’s what Dhs ex did, gave hers to their DD

DoubtingMyPatience · 03/10/2019 22:22

I don’t think so... but I did sell my mums engagement and wedding ring... I got £12 for both Blush

Thankfully neither my mum nor my dad gave a shite since they had a fairly bitter divorce.

Gretais · 03/10/2019 22:23

i have a Ds so i cant imagine he'll be bothered? the engagement ring was 5 grand and wedding ring was 2

Sell your wedding ring if it’s a precious metal but not your engagement fingers if it’s a good stone. I was in your position and tried to sell both. The jeweller gave me great advice that my solitaire diamond was worth more than he could give me. I eventually had it made into a necklace which I wear every day.
Best thing to come out of the marriage after my son 😂

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 03/10/2019 22:24

Yeah sell em.

Gretais · 03/10/2019 22:25

i might get the engagement ring stone put on a necklace good idea

SamBeckett · 03/10/2019 22:29

I would sell them and use the £s to open / add to a bank account for your DS so that in time he can benefit .

Noooodles · 03/10/2019 22:32

You’ll be horrified at the resale value. I work in the jewellery industry and the best thing is definitely to make the diamond into another piece of jewellery that you’ll love. You could have the diamond removed and sell the metal to fund setting the diamond elsewhere.

Gretais · 03/10/2019 22:35

What should i be looking at for a platinum 2 grand ring?

OP posts:
Pinkyyy · 03/10/2019 22:37

Impossible for anyone to say.

Gretais · 03/10/2019 22:42

im going to get a few valuations

OP posts:
Pinkyyy · 03/10/2019 22:45

You can get it valued but done expect to be paid anywhere near what it's valued at. They've got to sell it for a profit and will probably offer a fraction of the 2k original cost.

Pinkdoor · 03/10/2019 22:45

I got offered £150 for my £2.5k engagement ring.

I'd keep them.

Riverviews · 03/10/2019 22:47

I sold the wedding ring. No use for it any more

BritInUS1 · 03/10/2019 22:47

It will be sold based on weight, but I think 20% of cost is not unusual

MachineBee · 03/10/2019 23:07

I kept mine to give to my daughters but had a burglary and they were stolen. Wish I’d sold them and at very least saved the proceeds.

doublebarrellednurse · 03/10/2019 23:17

I did. I was glad they were gone.

Ontheboardwalk · 03/10/2019 23:23

Agree with PP you’d be surprised how little you will get from them if you sell them

I paid £900 for diamond earrings. From same shop 5 months later I wanted to trade them in for another pair £500 dearer. They offered me £320 - as a trade in value. God knows how much less they would have offered me as a sale price

runoutofnamechanges · 03/10/2019 23:28

Are there any stones in the platinum wedding ring? If it's just platinum, possibly only £100-200 for the metal Hmm Unless it's by a desirable designer that adds value.

I had mine incorporated into cufflinks for DS and a pendant for DD on their 18th birthday. They were the 2 good things to come out of the marriage so it turned a symbol of something bad into something good.

Maskin · 03/10/2019 23:31

And this thread perfectly illustrates why you should never, ever buy brand new diamonds!!
