Best Ever Singer?

AIBU to be a nosy caah and ask who you think the best singer the world has ever seen is?

Mine is Freddie Mercury. I've just seen the ad for Amazon music (I think that's what it was) where it's just his voice singing Somebody To Love, music drowned out, and Sweet.Baby.Jesus, it gave me goosebumps. If I didn't have alopecia, my hair would be standing on end, I tell you Grin Wow, could that man sing!

I told DP and he said, "meh, he was alright." Shock

Who are your favourites? And any particular song where they're at their best?

Alicia Keyes.

And Lauren Hill! When she sings in sister act 2 - I get goosebumps.

Bob Seger - We've got tonight is just an amazing song

Figgygal · 03/10/2019 19:42

Ha just read your title and thought Freddie

LakieLady · 03/10/2019 19:48

Nina Simone is near the top of my list, @Areyoufree, along with Etta James, but I'm afraid they were both trumped by Billie Holliday. I also think Joni Mitchell is hugely underrated (and deeply unfashionable Grin).

I find picking a favourite male singer much harder. Bowie? Willard White? Ian Curtis? Bowie? So many amazing singers, and so different that I can't really compare them.

PennyNotSoWise · 03/10/2019 19:51

Loving this thread. So many great singers I'd never even heard of, so thanks everyone!

Another one for me was the lead singer of The Platters (haven't put a name because I'm not sure if they had a few over the years ??) Particularly Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, that voice makes me absolutely melt, so lovely. I'm off to google their history Grin

I love folk type singers - Fionn Regan’s voice is beautiful. I also like Ben Howard. Best female singer for me would be Dolores O’Riordan - another talent gone too soon sad

There are some fantastic voices in folk music. The McGarrigle sisters both have great voices and when they sing together they're sublime. I also loved a singer called John Martyn, who started out a pure folkie but got progressively more influenced by blues and jazz as he got older. He has a way of singing that is very intimate, but still powerful. Sadly, he died a couple of years ago.

Dowser · 03/10/2019 19:57

Yes definitely woodhill . Awesome and effortless voice

So pleased someone else is a Gene Pitney fan.

I'd like to add Dinah Washington, Shirley Bassey, Donna Summer and the soprano Sissel Kyrkjebø. I was also a pavarotti fan.
