Best Ever Singer?

PennyNotSoWise · 02/10/2019 22:34

AIBU to be a nosy caah and ask who you think the best singer the world has ever seen is?

Mine is Freddie Mercury. I've just seen the ad for Amazon music (I think that's what it was) where it's just his voice singing Somebody To Love, music drowned out, and Sweet.Baby.Jesus, it gave me goosebumps. If I didn't have alopecia, my hair would be standing on end, I tell you Grin Wow, could that man sing!

I told DP and he said, "meh, he was alright." Shock

Who are your favourites? And any particular song where they're at their best?

Can you be taught to sing?

Oh what about Marcella Detroit from pop star to opera star.. thought she was excellent

MrsJBaptiste · 03/10/2019 20:04

Beverley Knight has a fabulous voice 👌

PennyNotSoWise · 03/10/2019 20:04

Can’t play him on YouTube penny as we are listening to the excellent robin Pickford at the old white swan yard york

Grin I was just surprised you've never heard of him, is all. He died young in a tragic way, it makes his version of Hallelujah very haunting to listen to.

MrsJBaptiste · 03/10/2019 20:05

And yes, Jeff Buckley keeps getting mentioned but I have no idea who he is or from what era?

Dowser · 03/10/2019 20:06

I shall look him up when home
The lead singer from Hyde family jam... who?
In york also has an excellent voice

Charmatt · 03/10/2019 20:07

Morton Harket- his clarity, range and ability to hold a note is fabulous. He is excellent live too.

And I agree with Neil Remnant too!

woodhill · 03/10/2019 20:08

Thanks Dowser Smile

Charmatt · 03/10/2019 20:08

*Tennant

...bloody autocorrect!

PennyNotSoWise · 03/10/2019 20:08

Beverley Knight has a fabulous voice

She's from my city! She seems to have a great personality too, very humble.

SerenDippity, thank you for reminding me of Jimmy Helms, that’s brought a tear to my eye

Tiptopj · 03/10/2019 20:10

Freddie mercury
Roy orbison

June carter
Eva Cassidy
Shirley bassey

I'm trying to think of more modern singers that are the same grade
Beyonce
Katherine Jenkins

Ponoka7 · 03/10/2019 20:11

It's a, personal one but i like Ryan Tedder's voice.

Migrainefun · 03/10/2019 20:11

Has to be Freddie, I don't care much for male voices but whenever I hear his voice I am just blown away.

user764329056 · 03/10/2019 20:12

Also Teddy Pendergrass
Jimmy Cliff and Luciano for any reggae fans

ExhaustedGrinch · 03/10/2019 20:16

I agree with so many already mentioned but I'd have to add Billie Eilish to the list. I feel like she gets a lot of stick and is so underrated. I don't think she has the most powerful voice but it has such an ethereal quality to it. Especially love these performances from her

DeadButDelicious · 03/10/2019 20:17

Freddie Mercury,
Devin Townsend,
Phil Anselmo.

DeadButDelicious · 03/10/2019 20:18

Freddie Mercury,
Devin Townsend,
Phil Anselmo,
Annie Lennox.

ClashCityRocker · 03/10/2019 20:18

Another one for Jeff Buckley. Also a fantastic guitarist.

It would have been really interesting to see how he evolved. Grace was a fantastic album but it did feel like he was very much still finding his identity.

I think Maggie Reilly has a lovely tone to her voice too.

Cocolapew · 03/10/2019 20:18

Dean Martin, I think he's way better than Sinatra.
Angie Stone has an amazing voice.
I'm one of the few (?) who finds Freddie a bit meh.
Neil Tennant can't sing, he talks. But that didn't The Pet Shop Boys aren't good, but he's hardly a great singer.

SimonJT · 03/10/2019 20:24

@PennyNotSoWise She is a major diva, I was at a show where she performed one song a few weekends ago, everyone had to sign a disclaimer saying they wouldn’t talk to her, including the people she was performing with!

MerryBerryCheesecake · 03/10/2019 20:28

Freddie Mercury but also Brian May and Roger Taylor
(Some of the most spine tingly bits of Queen songs are one of the others singing but you don't always realise it)
Midge Ure (Ultravox) A more incredible voice than given credit for.
George Michael
Celine Dion
Tom Chaplin (Keane)
Darren Hayes
Andy Bell (Erasure)
Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys)
Alison Moyet
Adele
Agnetha Fältskog
Peter Cetera
Steve Perry (Journey)
Enya
Karen Carpenter
Theo Hutchcraft (Hurts)

Rag'n'Bone Man, Rita Ora and Lewis Capaldi are coming along nicely too.

There are so many, more than I can think of right now. There are just so many beautiful singers out there.
You cannot choose just one.

Oh, no way! She always seemed so nice in interviews. Damn. There's no excuse to be that obnoxious, I hate people with that sort of attitude.
