OP posts:
TeacupDrama · 02/10/2019 20:46

Brexit is not a left right wing thing many leave voters are traditional working class labour voters
Many left wing activists were anti EU ie Tony Benn their main point was the principle people in EU are not elected but appointed and can't be got rid off ie JC Juncker, Bernier etc it is fairly easy to google why the left wing were anti EU
I do think Margaret Thatcher was more right wing than B Johnson, she would have hated the idea of a minimum wage which has been increasng under this and the last Government faster than inflation

ChilledBee · 02/10/2019 20:47

I think it is because we lived through Thatcher that we recognise a Right Wing government when we see one.

messolini9 · 02/10/2019 20:57

Eh?
We have a right wing government.
I was a young adult when Thatcher was in power.
HTH

FoxFoxSierra · 02/10/2019 21:02

I lived through Thatcher. This is a right wing government. Hth

ghostyslovesheets · 02/10/2019 21:06

yes I lived through her to - this is definitely a right wing Gov

2 wrong don't make a right

even Ken Clarke described this as the most right wing cabinet he had seen - and was one of her ministers!

justintimberlakesfishwife · 02/10/2019 21:13

Thatcher was right wing, this government is right wing. I'm not sure why you don't think it is, OP?

MrsTommyBanks · 02/10/2019 21:17

I think we need to remember that all we have had so far are proposals, re NHS, police and the rest.
I personally think we will be very unlikely to see any of these promises being kept.
I actually do think this Conservative Gov does have the potential to out Tory Thatchers.

Seeingadistance · 02/10/2019 21:20

Another one who remembers the That her years, and thinks this government is actually more scary as not only very right wing, but authoritarian and people are falling for it!

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 02/10/2019 21:26

Of course they are right wing. The thing that makes them scary is that they are without principles. They have also managed to convince the poor masses that they are on their side and for the people and it’s the “establishment” that is the cause of their problems as well as ethnic minorities. Even though they are the establishment. It is beyond bonkers.

LimitIsUp · 02/10/2019 22:39

I also lived through Thatcher and remember the Jingoism of the Falklands, was a student in Sheffield during the miners strike, and protested against the poll tax and student loans (student loans were just bring mooted at that stage). This is a right wing government with the far right gaining considerable ground

A number of conservative MPs believe this too and have gone on record as saying they don't recognise the party they have been members of for decades and that it is no longer the 'broad church' it once was

1066vegan · 02/10/2019 22:49

I was a teenager/student in the 80s. I remember the Falklands, miner's strike and poll tax riots.

Thatcher would have totally approved of Austerity. This is a dangerous right wing populist government. Thatcher decimated manufacturing and many communities have never recovered. But at least she recognised the importance of Parliament and the independence of the judiciary.

WispyTurnip · 02/10/2019 22:50

Exactly what @ChilledBee said. We recognise it because we lived through the Thatcher years.

familycourtq · 02/10/2019 23:01

Lived through Thatcher. This is definitely a right wing government.

HeddaGarbled · 02/10/2019 23:03

As above - lived through Thatcher, can recognise a right wing government when I see one.

HelenaDove · 02/10/2019 23:07

Thatcher was right wing This Government is right wing.

But at the very least Thatcher left sickness benefits alone.

Samosaurus · 02/10/2019 23:09

At least Thatcher didn’t take away freedom of movement.

CendrillonSings · 02/10/2019 23:11

It’s been a pretty moderate government so far - looking forward to some large tax cuts before I can truly call them right-wing.

TheNestedIf · 03/10/2019 00:18

I lived through Thatcher. My mother cried every time she was re-elected.

This is very much a right wing government. The difference is that this one has got to its position through privilege rather than competence and its principles shift with the perceived mood of the electorate. At least you could trust Thatcher to have a plan and the capability and conviction to see it through even if it meant you were utterly shafted afterwards.

I don't want to offend anyone who had the same sort of upbringing as Johnson et al. I absolutely don't think privilege = incompetence/immorality. It's just the useless, unethical shower we have in government.

OldGranvilleHouse · 03/10/2019 00:36

In common with other posters, I remember the Thatcher Years - I was 15 when she was elected and 18 when my dad was made redundant never to work again.

I 100% agree with @ChilledBee who has put it very succinctly. Another thing to remember is that right wing isn’t just a financial thing........ Priti Patel’s gloating speech yesterday was much more to the right than anything seen in the 80s/90s.

I detested what Thatcher did to this country but, with that in mind, I also say that she’d be spinning in her grave at the state of the country right now.

pumkinspicetime · 03/10/2019 00:51

Thatcher decimated manufacturing and many communities have never recovered. But at least she recognised the importance of Parliament and the independence of the judiciary.

I would also add she understood the importance of Europe and a functioning economy. Both ideas the current government cannot be bothered with.
I can't imagine her saying, "fuck business" in any form.

AlunWynsKnee · 03/10/2019 00:53

Thatcher at least had some moderate Conservatives in her cabinet. This lot are at least as right wing as Tebbit's Spitting Image puppet. Except bizarrely for Johnson who is a Liberal at heart but really only cares about power so he's riding that pony to get there.
