DBS - help!

Just read my emails today - received an email in AUGUST from the baring service to say they have not received my payment and if I don't pay by end of August then my online subscription will be cancelled.

I've checked my bank statement - no attempt has been made to take the money out.

I've tried to log on using my update service ID and it won't let me log in.

I am due back to work on 3rd. Can I work? Is it legal? Do I need to inform my management? How long will it take to get a new DBS? Do I stay off work until such time?! Blush

Why didn't my bank take the payment?!!! Angry

Why didn't I check my emails before?!!Confused

Why didn't HR get notified and pass on the message to email?!!!!

9 hours before the working world is back at their desks and I can't think straight I'm so worried.

If you didn't renew your update service subscription, a new DBS will now be required. In regards to if you will be able to work whilst a new one is processed, they is a decision your employer will need to make. What do you do?

DontMakeMeShushYou · 02/10/2019 00:44

What is your job?

Why are your employers not paying for your DBS if they require you to have one?

glsgow107 · 02/10/2019 00:45

I used to work for an agency doing compliance and if it didn't go through, you would be barred from working. Do you work for a cater/nursing agency?

glsgow107 · 02/10/2019 00:45

Carer!

savingshoes · 02/10/2019 01:18

Thank you all so far. Oh Barlyboos noooooo!!!! Any ideas on the timeframe for DBS checks? 6 weeks? 25 years? Hmm

What do I do? Clearly fail at life.

Ooooo! For a DNS on the update service, if I just pay every year, does that mean I don't have to go and get a new check with the appointment and paperwork etc?
I thought it was valid for a year and then had to be renewed and the online registration and payment thing was just to transfer it if you change employer...
Sorry if this is detailing but it would really make my life easier (and be a LOT cheaper if it just renews automatically if I pay online)

glsgow107 · 02/10/2019 01:37

DBS checks get shared around police forces, not just where you live so it really could be days or weeks. If your online one has run out you need to fill in a new one. They generally don't update if you've moved or changed bank details and didn't let them know.

Ponoka7 · 02/10/2019 09:03

If yours has only just expired it might be through within days. However all of the colleges, apprenticeships etc are applying around now, so that might delay it for upto two weeks.

You are duty bound to inform your employer, it's a stackable offence if you don't.

Thisisthelastone · 02/10/2019 09:05

I've had this, I rang them, got it sorted all fine :-) didn't stop working at all! It was my manager who had flagged it up so he was aware.

PookieDo · 02/10/2019 09:06

Any DBS I have done lately has taken about a week, but these were on people who have not moved house for 20 years which always helps I think

Icantthinkofanewname87 · 02/10/2019 09:31

You can get a new DBS in two weeks. You should tell management yours hasn’t come through yet and show them the error so they know it’s not your fault. You probably shouldn’t work until the new DBS is back but I’d imagine they’ll as you to anyway. In one of my previous jobs they made me start working before mine came back.

Icantthinkofanewname87 · 02/10/2019 09:32

I mean within two weeks - it might come sooner of course

savingshoes · 02/10/2019 23:24

glsgow107 bank details - this was the reason. My bank card expired and therefore the payment was never made.

Trying to work out if I will not be able to work until it's processed and if so, has my employer state got the right to say it's unpaid leave/force me to use my annual leave for this.

I'm a bit confused by all the responses on this thread. Surely you have a DBS check before you start employment and that's that. You can choose to pay for the update service which just means you don't pay again if your employer wants to do another check, or something along those lines (I've never opted in because my employer can pay again if they want a new one done). It's not like it means you can't work because you no longer have a valid DBS, because they're only valid on the day the check is done anyway.

Does your job require frequent DBS checks? Is it a requirement of your employment that you subscribe to the update service.

From recent colleagues experience, a new check takes about 2 weeks. Obviously can vary though!

savingshoes · 02/10/2019 23:55

I have never done a DBS for current employer.

My DBS was done in (?I think) 2014 and when I received the paper copy I used the update service.

When I left this employment and started with a new employer, I gave them my details and my certificate that was done in 2014 and they did an organization check thing to confirm my dbs when I first started.

Thank you so much for everyone's help so far - I'm really grateful for all your points

Signing up for update service isn't compulsory is it? I know loads of nurses, teachers and carers and hardly any are signed up.

Sunshine93 · 03/10/2019 00:02

I'm a teacher and I don't know anything about the update service.i just had one done before I started my job. I think they might have to redo it every few years.i don't pay monthly subscription.

compulsiveliar2019 · 03/10/2019 00:13

You don't need a new DBS. If you change employers you would be asked to complete a new one but as PP said they are only valid on the day the check is done. The update system is a fairly new scheme set up to make it easier and cheaper to change jobs and those of us who are self employed.
