To think people are so mean about ginger hair!

So why are people so mean and disrespectful of people with ginger hair?

It really upsets me.
What is wrong with ginger hair?
The amount of people that take the piss is shocking! I'm not ginger but it still gets on my wick. It's sad. Does anyone agree?

All you gingers need a Ginger Discount Card

FreeSpiritJen · 30/09/2019 20:29

@solidgoldbaby

@FreeSpiritJen you’re quite right. Can you imagine the uproar if you said someone was too brown? 😮

Well exactly! If anyone said that, it would be classed a hate crime.

But people who are very pale/have ginger hair seem fair game. Unfair and wrong. Sad

I do also wonder if it boils down the historic dislike of Irish people. (And maybe even Scottish?) Very sad and nasty. Sad

The hatred towards ginger haired folk (from some) is bloody evil tbh, and so bizarre because they are so striking and attractive IMO.

Weirdly, the attitude towards ginger haired folk seems to be one extreme or another. It's either people who think they are stunning, and striking, and the pale skin and/or freckles are cute, and the green eyes (they often have) are attractive. Smile

OR, it's people who are vile and nasty and derogatory about ginger folk. Who bully and berate and mock.

Doesn't seem to be much in between.

And the 'are your pubes ginger too' comments are pathetic. How stupid are the people who ask this??? What other fucking colour would they be? Stupid cunts. Hmm

I also know a few people who had people looking at their cute ginger haired baby, and tilting their head, saying 'awwww, oh no... poor thing. Gonna have a tough life as a copper top!' And I have also known several ginger haired women who were super grateful that their child was not ginger like them, but blonde or brunette like their husband. (Because of the tough time they had had as ginger haired people themselves......)

As I said earlier, I think ginger hair is becoming more 'cool' now and there are lots of famous 'red-heads' who people love and who are classed as cute or hot or attractive etc, but there is (sadly) still some prejudice and hatred towards ginger people.

As the OP said, any prejudice because of hair colour OR skin colour - ANY skin colour - needs to stop.

I don't think it ever will though sadly.........

YesQueen · 30/09/2019 20:31

What makes me laugh is it's the same insults now as it was 25 years ago when I was at school. I'm like can they not come up with anything new?! But I have glasses, curly hair and a redhead so... easy target

Carpathian2 · 30/09/2019 20:32

Having had the piss taken out of me all my life for being ginger, I now have bleached highlights because I've never ever come to love it. I hate having ginger hair and I'm sick of being the butt of jokes about it.

hsegfiugseskufh · 30/09/2019 20:40

I died my hair ginger at 15 and never had any comments made, but yet my friend who had naturallu gorgeous hair got bullied for it. Fucking stupid.

Ds has beautiful ginger hair. Started off dark and now its a blondey ginger. I will be devastated if he gets bullied for it.

I personally think red hair is lovely.

YesQueen · 30/09/2019 20:41

This is how much mine has changed. First pic is age 10 or so

To think people are so mean about ginger hair!

I was bullied so badly as a child (I’m mid twenties) that I died my hair black from age 14-22. At 22, guess who came along, my beautiful red headed baby. Well that was that, a LOT of money and hair dresser trips later I’m back to red head.

If anyone DARES to even mention it in a negative way now, I’m tempted to call them a racist. If you get what I mean.

It’s completely unacceptable to be racist, or homophobic, or religion phobic (sorry it’s late, not got the right words anymore) so why is it acceptable to tease about this? You wouldn’t tease about race. I’m so fiercely protective over it. I make sure she’s confident, to be fair she’s pretty confident, and knows she’s got magical hair like Anna from frozen and brave.

Gets my goat so badly this does. They’re innocent children. I was an innocent child.

Bullying needs to stop full stop. Angry

31weeksgone · 30/09/2019 20:52

And for the record, now I’ve been brave enough to have a reason to do it, I LOVE my hair and I’m gutted I cared what people thought for so long. That’s why it makes me so mad on behalf of all red heads.

Mopmum35 · 30/09/2019 20:53

FreeSpiritJen couldn't agree more!
YesQueen: completely agree, all old shit still being said.
Carpathian2 it's a shame those bullies made you feel that way. Sad
holidayhelpppp yea that is pretty stupid! Ds hair sounds lovelySmile
YesQueen your hair was/is gorgeous.

sqirrelfriends · 30/09/2019 20:53

Agreed, it's stupid.

My first ever boyfriend had bright orange hair and got all kinds of grief for it, even a teacher said he had no soul.

I think red hair is beautiful, lots of people dye their hair red nowadays so it can't just be me that thinks it.

Mopmum35 · 30/09/2019 21:04

@31weeksgone absolutely bloody brilliant! Dh and I have said similar to what you have just said. Well done to you, I love what you have put and how you stand regarding gingersSmile
@squirrelfriends what a knob of a teacher.

Do you know what also pisses me off, it's when people laugh at the word ' ginger' 🤦‍♀️
Like why?

OP posts:
31weeksgone · 30/09/2019 22:03

I tell you what though, I’m in a particularly academic place at the moment studying at a very very high level (not blowing my own trumpet!) there’s 96 of us in the group. AT LEAST 25% of us are red heads, which is generally really unusual I don’t normally come across that many red heads in one place. So that just leads me to believe that red heads are just undeniably clever 😜

(Even though I appear not!)

Jody21 · 30/09/2019 22:30

I have ginger hair, as do both of my DC. I love it now, but for years I dyed it every color possible. I was painfully shy in my teens and was a natural target for bullies who would shout 'Fanta Pubes!' at all the gingers in our school. Gratifying now to see those same assholes every now and again and they have hardly any hair left at all between them!

Elprup · 30/09/2019 22:32

Honestly I would kill to have ginger hair. I think it’s beautiful!

definitelyshouldknowbetter · 30/09/2019 22:46

My hair is now it’s natural auburn colour and I love it!!! I get so many compliments, people want to touch it all the time when I wear it down which is a bit weird but after years of bleaching it blonde (didn’t love and appreciate it at 15BlushWink) I grew it out and went back to natural and don’t regret for a second!

Apparently redheads have a gene that makes us more prone to fainting, bleed more and we have a higher pain threshold. I think there is some American studies into it, I’ve not properly researched it but when I had my first child I wanted an epidural which didn’t take despite the anaesthetists best efforts and then a massive PPH and the midwife made a comment afterwards about it being the red head that caused it so I googled it and it is a genuine thing! And obviously we’re all super cleverGrin

Nirvana1979 · 30/09/2019 23:01

I was bullied for having ginger hair all through school. Had the pubes comments too. This will never die out, even grown ups i know make nasty remarks in front of me.

A guy in my office refers to an ex colleague as a fucking ginger cunt all the time. Says things like, "who cares, hes ginger, fk him etc etc. My manager sits there listening and doesn't say a word. I'm one more remark away from going to HR about him. Who the fk does he think he is? Saying those things is bad enough but saying them in front of someone with ginger hair is just not right. On balance i do get nice compliments too.

Ds1 is ginger too, he has had the same comments but hes pretty chilled and just laughs it off. Hes 20 now.

Nirvana1979 · 30/09/2019 23:02

@definitelyshouldknowbetter thats interesting, i used to faint all the time.Grin

mullyluo · 30/09/2019 23:09

My son has gorgeous ginger ringlets, he get so many compliments about his hair especially from older ladies who love to touch it. When I was at school a lot of the ginger kids would have gotten pick on for it but i think (hope for my son) that the tide is changing and ginger is becoming more fashionable now.

loveskaka · 30/09/2019 23:11

My hair is brown, I bleach it and dye it ginger 😍 x

Ozziewozzie · 30/09/2019 23:19

It’s always baffled me why people have such an issue with colour.
I genuinely fail to see how surprising it could possibly be. We’re living in a world where we are becoming accepting of so much, yet people actually still feel the need to be derogatory towards ginger hair colour. Astonishing.

I think the only acceptable prejudice should be towards all the ignorant twazzocks who make other people’s life a misery based on colour of hair, skin, shape, size, nationality, sexuality, class, ability, gender, age.......

I’ve always said, if any of my children were a bit mischievous at school...ok, fair enough, but if I ever found out any of them bullied anyone, I’d be disgusted.

To ask someone what colour their pubic hair is? Shocking.

Mopmum35 · 30/09/2019 23:34

@Riojasmoothy your mil sounds awful. What a horrible thing to say.

@31weeksgone you sound very clever darling😁

@Jody21 Fanta pubes 🤦‍♀️ what dicks.

@Elprup that's nice Smile

@definitelyshouldknowbetter well done for going back to your natural colour.

@Nirvana1979 that's discussing! What a pair pricks.

@mullyluo you little ones hair sounds amazing, it would be amazing if the bullies did stop.

@loveskaka 👍😘 support for the gingers.

@Ozziewozzie absolutely spot on with your comment couldn't of said it better 😁

Ginger here. Was teased a lot at primary school and like others got the vile “do they match” heckling from older men. By the time I got to late teens I had developed a repertoire of smart replies and had much more confidence in dealing with the piss taking. I have had some weird looks when abroad, but things seems to have died down, people have other things to get worked up about these days!
