To think people are so mean about ginger hair!

So why are people so mean and disrespectful of people with ginger hair?

It really upsets me.
What is wrong with ginger hair?
The amount of people that take the piss is shocking! I'm not ginger but it still gets on my wick. It's sad. Does anyone agree?

"It's a weird British thing and I've always assumed that it's based on a hatred of Irish/Scottish people."

Just what I was coming on to say - the negativity is often rooted in anti scots/anti Irish feelings/history

I'm a Scot of Irish descent with auburn hair, VERY pale skin (I don't tan I'm either ghostly white/blue tinged or red from sunburn with an outbreak of freckles!). I got grief at school about it and from about 13 the horrible comments about whether pubes were same colour! Ugh!

Even my ex when I was pregnant with dd said he hoped she didn't have my colouring! Arse! She doesn't - we barely look related! She has black hair (well dyed purple currently!), olive skin and is tall and slim - I'm 5'2" and dumpy! She does have her fathers nose unfortunately!

"I get fed up with the dumb blonde comments as I'm pretty sure that being blonde does not make me stupid." Used to get that too as I was blonde (dyed) lost of my 20's, a lot assumed I was a natural blonde as I have fair eyebrows and pale skin. Idiots!

"If it's ginger on your head, of COURSE your pubes are going to be ginger!" Not necessarily! Mine are blonde grey

I've had a LOT of comments on my skin colour too. Back when sun beds were a thing people would try and "encourage" me to use them - I'll do without the almost guaranteed skin cancer thanks! And recent years it's been umpteen "recommendations" of fake tans! For one thing I have sensitive highly allergenic skin so I'm not keen on farting around using stuff that will probably make my eczema flare, I will admit I've been tempted and persuaded on occasion but it looks weird! Not even orange! Because I have blue tones I look yellow!

Omg I didnt think Id get so many replies/ comments.. thanks all of you! I cant possible comment on every post though... Freespiritjen: I'm with you! My dh has ginger hair Smile I love your comment DesdamonasHandkerchief: how awful they shouted that! Sashtag I'm not surprised it chipped away at your self worth bloody horrible that...i do agree that at times that when people comment on ginger hair it does sound patronizing, and the pubes comments specially are fucking sick, just disgusting... some of you have had some horrid things said to you/ children and what a shame parents are going to the hairdresser and asking them to change the colour of there DC's hair, shocker... I just find it disturbing that it's so acceptable that people take the piss and speak negatively about ginger hair like one of you put in your post about the baby group and the midwife. ( I would love to train to be a midwife btw) and also I agree with skin colour aswell! So what if a ginger man/,women or child has fair skin, what's wrong with freckles...bloody idiot's. You shouldn't have to be made to feel bad or an outcast cos you are not tanned... thanks for all your post some really interesting and sad reading. I agree with nearly everyone of you. I'll read that link later aswell. I do find alot of adult really take the piss, kids pick up on it alot of time but kids can be rather mean aswell.. but bloody mothers at the school are fuckerAngry.well I'm happy I have my ginge in my bed at nightGrin

I hate the G word with a passion.

Jesse70 · 30/09/2019 19:17

I'm ginger and I wear fake tan I like having a tan and I like being ginger
My daughter is not ginge
I hate to admit it but I seen so many ginger boys bullied that I hope if I ever have a boy he doesn't get my colouring but I do love a ginger beard

ChaosisntapitChaosisaladder19 · 30/09/2019 19:19

My ds gets compliments all the time for his red hair.

CanaryFish · 30/09/2019 19:24

I’ll never forget a former friend of mine loudly guffawing that she found it “so funny” that both me and an another friend “ended up with kids who are ginger” like we’d drawn the short straw are something.
My daughter is also shit sick of people commenting on her hair and old people touching it

Mopmum35 · 30/09/2019 19:27

Jesse70: alot of boys I've seen bullied cos of ginger hair too...

It's awful that anyone is bullied full stop, but due to hair colour and skin colour in any sence is just disgusting... it needs to stop.

Ginger here. I got a lot of stick for it as a child but since adulthood, it's generally only compliments (and quite a lot).

Vulpine · 30/09/2019 19:29

Rather have old people touching hair than idiots making negative comments on it

TheWernethWife · 30/09/2019 19:33

Sex on a stick Jamie Fraser (Outlander) has gorgeous auburn hair.

PickAChew · 30/09/2019 19:42

Er Catherine Tate is a redhead, herself!

Jesse70 · 30/09/2019 19:47

Yeah boys definitely get it worse I think
As when most girls get older it turns into compliments

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 30/09/2019 19:54

DD says she has orange hair Smile

To think people are so mean about ginger hair!
LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/09/2019 20:00

I stopped using a kids shampoo when ds was little because it had some crap blurb on the back along the lines of some ridiculous planet where the sky was green, trees were blue and people had orange hair. Bah. You lost one redhead here!

namechanged857 · 30/09/2019 20:00

My daughter has had nothing but complements for her ginger hair, she really is stunning though. However, she hasn't reached high school yet 🙈

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/09/2019 20:01

@DontGoIntoTheLongGrass - her hair is beautiful. Mine was like that when I was a kid but I had huge curls too.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 30/09/2019 20:05

Yes Catherine Tate is ginger Pick it was in her 'nan' persona, she's obviously less sensitive than me, or hadn't just had a red haired baby!

crispsahoy · 30/09/2019 20:11

I have ginger hair, when I was younger, 14-18 maybe, I got a lot of 'ginger pubes' comments. Now I get nothing but compliments. My ds is ginger and everyone loves his hair.

As a ginger I don't like when people call me red head or strawberry blonde. I'm very proud to have ginger hair

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 30/09/2019 20:13

It just goes on to show how a characteristic is seen across different countries. I can only recall three redheads I've personally seen in my entire life, living in a 70% white city in a multi diverse country. Blonde hair and red are considered stunning, the one to aim for and worth spending hundreds in the saloon.
I have mousey hair mentioned above - I think it's ok, don't love it but don't hate it. A couple weeks ago, a neighbour stopped to compliment it. Said she could only dream of having such a colour and that she had never seen it before. Mousey brown!

Kanga83 · 30/09/2019 20:17

I'm ginger. My kids are ginger. I was teased at school, now I love it. It's a justification for my temperament and matches my personality perfectly. Anyone who says anything negative about it is either jealous or thick.

doublebarrellednurse · 30/09/2019 20:18

My ex was a total bellend (and still is) about Ginger people. It must kill him that I'm now married to a ginger - a very ginger - guy and having a baby with him.

Husband says it's got worse since he was a kid and he was bullied pretty badly. He says the internet is the major change for him.

Kanga83 · 30/09/2019 20:21

My six year old was teased by a year three about her hair. She told me proudly (because I was called in by the teacher at the end of the day) that's she told him her hair was like her mummy's and Anna out of Frozen who is a princess, but his hair was brown and looked like dog poo and no one likes dog poo. Oh and he smelled of it too. I was mortified but proud at the same time (shes year one and stood up to a year three in front of his friends).

Shitonthebloodything · 30/09/2019 20:26

My ds has bright copper/Auburn hair that's now curly and blue eyes. We get stopped on average about 4-5 times a day by people commenting on it. Most say how lovely it is but we've had some comments about what a 'shame' it is and how he'll be bullied etc.
Cunts.

Riojasmoothy · 30/09/2019 20:26

My DS, aged 6 has beautiful ginger hair and he is very proud of it. He has always received lots of compliments about his hair.
Oddly the only person who has ever said anything negative was oddly my MIL who dyes her hair red often.
DS pointed out another child and said "he has ginger hair like me!" She relied "no darling, you're not ginger, you have lovely hair". As if the two are mutually exclusive. I wasn't happy at all.
There are definitely more ginger kids around these days and I am pretty sure there is much less bullying of them, probably for this reason!
