WTF is wrong with people - Free Stuff

So I have some furniture that I have offered on Facebook Market Place, for free.

The furniture is in good condition but it has slight (cat) damage so I have offered it for free.

Women messages me asking for more photos which I sent, she then messaged me saying they are “too worn” and she’ll keep looking. They aren’t worn at all, it’s our furniture and has been for some time and there is nothing wrong with it - and it’s free!! Why not just say no thanks and leave it at that.

Other people messaging asking if it’s still free and if they don’t get a immediate reply sending another message “??”.

I reckon I would have been better off asking for a tenner. Wtf is wrong with people?!

I had some toys for sale and someone didn’t seem to understand the concept of putting a postcode into google maps.

I used to live off main road A that crosses another main road B, the second a major route through the city. I described where I lived as just off main road A, the side with Sainsburys and the high school, my street is just before the Tesco Express. If you get to the Tesco you’ve gone too far.

Despite that I had a series of messages. Are you near the dentist? No that’s the wrong side of main road B, keep going and go straight on at the roundabout. Are you near Y street on a random nearby estate? No I’m about 5 houses off main road A.

About an hour later I got a snottagram saying she had to give up as her baby was now crying. Like that was my fault 😂. I actually don’t think I could have explained it much clearer.

I’ve just had a no show from a CF who wanted me to deliver a £5 item, she lives literally five/ten minutes walk away and I’ve been rushing around today so not going to put myself out for a fiver, even if it’s minutes away in the car. Lazy cow.

HolyGuac · 30/09/2019 16:22

It certainly brings out the worst mannered people in my experience.
I've given stuff away on Gumtree and stated collection only, then got messages asking for delivery, or asking what supermarket I go to and they will meet me.
The best was a woman who said she couldn't drive to me and needed me to drop
It to her ten miles away because her son would be upset if he didn't get it when he came home from school. Cheeky and entitled. I've given lots away for free and find it really does bring out the Cheeky F's of the world.
A particularly cheeky sod asked me if I could have the things ready at the door as he didn't have much time and at collection complained the free chest of drawers he was getting was too big for his car and I'd need to get them dropped to him. The measurements were clearly boldly on the Ad. Told him I couldn't go to the expense of hiring a van as I own a Corsa and he swore at me!!!

SuzieBishop · 30/09/2019 16:41

I was trying to sell my sons practically brand new £40 trainers for £5 - someone asked me to deliver so I said ok as I just wanted rid and I knew exactly where her house was. I turned up at 6.30pm as arranged to find the house in darkness. I knocked and knocked and definitely heard movement inside but no one came to the door. So I went home and messaged saying I’d knocked but no one answered. She replied quickly saying oh just leave them at the back door and I’ll transfer you money later. Don’t think so! Bloody CF.

Flynnshine · 30/09/2019 17:47

I sold some Clarks children's winter boots on eBay once - really cheap (around £5 I think) They had never been worn, still in the box with the original receipt and clearly brand new as the bottoms of them were perfect. I sold them, posted them off and then got a barrage of abuse from the buyer claiming they were filthy and clearly had been worn loads so I was lying in advert! Confused People are nuts!

namechangeididtoo · 30/09/2019 17:50

And why do they say £10 cash today (what other payment would you even consider?buttons)

measureformeasure · 30/09/2019 17:57

I advertised a car seat on Marketplace for free saying I wanted to go to a family in need. Woman told me that she was looking after a little one for sick sister and didn’t have any baby things so let her have it. It was back on Marketplace the next day for £50. I was livid.

exaltedwombat · 30/09/2019 18:05

'Cat damage', 'worn' - no big difference. Nothing to get indignant about.

JustOneSquareofDarkChocolate · 30/09/2019 18:08

First I stopped selling things then more recently I have given up giving things away on FB groups. I now give smaller items to charity shops who are always grateful to receive my nice stuff and so polite to me! Bigger items like old couches British Heart Foundation or Emanus charities collect from my house! Again so polite and grateful and I get a nice letter telling me how much they made from selling my donation.

Other people are the worst!

Twillow · 30/09/2019 18:15

I have this regularly. Tried to give away a loose sofa cover that had been damaged (for someone to use the fabric) and got whinging message about can't get out in the rain in my disability scooter. Fine, I can wait unitl it the weather's better but I'm giving something away, I'm not going to be taking a bloody hint about delivering it for you!
I always give, free or for sale, to the most polite reply!

princessTiasmum · 30/09/2019 18:15

Also when you give something away free then see it for sale a couple of days later,i had a lawnmower given by my son in law as mine was broken, but it was too heavy for me so advertised it free on facebook, as i hadn't paid for it, a few days later saw it advertised on fae=cebook for £30,
Also a brand new cat bed still with label on, asked for a good reductionand asked me to deliver it about 6 miles away,i don't drive but wouldn't have delivered it anyway

littlemisssugarpuffs · 30/09/2019 18:24

Oh no OP you have my sympathy I would stick it up for a tenner,

I recently started to sell stuff on Facebook and Shpock and it pisses me of when they ask "will you deliver" and then il say "yes for fuel" then they will say "no na" so they expect me to deliver something for free like I'm amazon fucking prime!

Really pisses me off!

chicken12 · 30/09/2019 18:26

I've found freegle and freecycle better for giving away free stuff

WhenOneDoorClosesAnotherOpens · 30/09/2019 18:29

I advertised a large dining room table and 4 chairs for free. I photographed from every angle. I gave the exact mesurements and specificaly spelled out YOU WILL NEED A VAN!!! All sorts of silly messages came through: 'Can you convert your measurements to feet and inches?' 'Can you deliver?' 'Does this come with plates, etc?' 'Is there a tablecloth?' Hmm
Finally a person messaged and said they wanted it and could collect on Wednesday morning. Brilliant! I gave my address, said they could reverse their van onto my drive and where the items would be left (under cover).
On Wednseday morning four people in a flipping MINI turn up!! I wasn't home but my neighbour said she sat watching them for 20 minutes trying to figure out how to get the large dining table into their car. Shock Obviously it was never going to fit, let alone with FOUR people inside. Somehow they managed to get the chairs in. Neighbour said it was like watching one of those clown routines loading all of that into a tiny car. So I was then left with a loan table to try to offload which is much more difficult than a table with chairs. Hmm
I don't think I would ever offer anything for free again.

scoobydoo1971 · 30/09/2019 18:33

After a few encounters with freebie hunters including several who thought ringing at 1am was ok...I now donate to the British Heart Foundation as they collect for free at agreed time. You can organise it through their website and they even tell you by email how much money they raised off your items, which is nice to know.

keffie12 · 30/09/2019 18:40

I stopped selling things on eBay cos of these type of experiences. The last time I put the dress up from our son wedding which cost me £200. I wore it once and had it dry cleaned.

Probably tried on more in the shop than the once I wore it. I also put the shoes, worn once and fascinator on. Shoes £60. Fascinator by Psul Smith £96.

The C.F I got messaging me wanting to pay £10 for items on the fascinator and dress, I couldn't believe. I didnt even bother replying. Price was on the showcase of starting price. You want to bid. Bid through that

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/09/2019 18:42

I got a barrage of abuse from the buyer claiming they were filthy and clearly had been worn loads so I was lying in advert!

I'm afraid that's standard on ebay, Flynnshine. Knowing that the company almost always sides with buyers, they claim "not as described" in the hope that they'll get a refund and you'll write it off rather than pay yet another lot of P&P for the item to be returned

Which is why so many of us have deserted the site now, leaving it largely for business sellers who can more easily absorb the endless cheating

Iamnotagoddess · 30/09/2019 18:46

I had this just last week.

It wasn’t a European language, was it? Wink

BiBiBirdie · 30/09/2019 18:55

I've given up with Marketplace. Amongst many other CFs these are the highlights;
DH is a vintage stereo nerd, he gets new bits and sells others on. He had a selection which together made a very nice hifi. He could have got more on eBay but asked me to put them on marketplace for £80.
Got a guy ask me, within seconds (big alarm bell) for more photos which I obliged with. Can I pay £5 he says, as this is "doing me a favour".
The same set, another guy. Asks if he can see them working. I said yes but would need to be when DH is home as wires is not my strong suit. He gets very angry about me listing them if they are my DHs and I'm a cunt. I say well he's home now, thinking it's him thinking I'm fobbing him off, no he wants me to show him not DH Hmm
Fuck knows what that was about
Then we had the woman who bitched at me for living nowhere near her in Brighton, why am I listing on marketplace. (clearly has no idea what location settings are for).
Then the woman who down voted me for refusing to sell to her for £10 when the item was £40.
You name it, I've had it. The amount who name a stupid price with the excuse they are "doing me a favour" made me get the rage. That and people who can't read adverts so ignore me saying I don't deliver or post.

Devilinatwinset · 30/09/2019 19:08

Free stuff makes people so greedy and grabby. I work in hospitality and I see it with free food & drink. Decorum & manners go out the window

Iminagony · 30/09/2019 19:13

I don't think its unreasonable to give you a reason she didn't want it. I would give a reason, I would feel rude just saying no thanks.

But fb is full of CFs.

Nearly47 · 30/09/2019 19:17

I find that putting in up for sale on eBay for 99p attracts people that actually wants stuff and won't mess around. Some went for 99 p some for a bit more. Donated some stuff by posting on local facebook group too. At least if they need help with delivery ( I did deliver couple of times to people that didn't have a car) it is not too far.

Loveyou3000 · 30/09/2019 19:28

Back when I was pregnant with DD I waa given a second hand full travel system, it was nice but mum surprised me with an oyster travel system and new carseat which obviously I wanted to keep, so I decided to pass on the other system for free. A girl gave me a sob story and I felt really bad for her and she said she didn't drive, neither did I, but would I deliver? I asked my mum and she said we could drop it off next time we went that way so we did, it was a faff though. Then the next day I see her put it up on FB market place for £70!

I sold some of my uni textbooks this week for £15 (which hurt my soul, as they were about £30-35 each!) and the girl turned up and said "I've only got £20 on me, but it's okay you just have the £20 I don't mind". I said I was sure I had £5 somewhere and she said not to worry! So not everyone is a rude CF, but I've had my fair share of experiences with those too.

FelicisNox · 30/09/2019 19:35

FB brings out the worst in people.. I've been lucky so far.

I've just had someone ask me to post something to York... I don't mind but I'm charging for post and they will get it when I have time to post it.
