WTF is wrong with people - Free Stuff

So I have some furniture that I have offered on Facebook Market Place, for free.

The furniture is in good condition but it has slight (cat) damage so I have offered it for free.

Women messages me asking for more photos which I sent, she then messaged me saying they are “too worn” and she’ll keep looking. They aren’t worn at all, it’s our furniture and has been for some time and there is nothing wrong with it - and it’s free!! Why not just say no thanks and leave it at that.

Other people messaging asking if it’s still free and if they don’t get a immediate reply sending another message “??”.

I reckon I would have been better off asking for a tenner. Wtf is wrong with people?!

It's awful, isn't it! Really puts you off bothering. People are so bloody rude and entitled!

I've taken to being very straight on anything I'm giving away and just putting no, I won't deliver and no, I won't hold it for x amount of days!

Flowersonthewall · 29/09/2019 18:17

@leghairdontcare have a look for baby banks in your areas they will take Buggies gladly!

Iamnotagoddess · 29/09/2019 18:18

This is the thing too - no I can’t hang on to them, they are two fucking huge sofas and new ones are coming the day after I have asked for them to be collected

It has to have the fire safety tags but what about British heart foundation or Too good to throw away charity?

I can't be bothered selling stuff on Facebook or gumtree anymore, we usually get loads of scammers if it's electronics too and on gumtree.

Ironfloor269 · 29/09/2019 18:20

I also can't stand this who just press the 'is this item available?' button just because..why not..and then when you say yes, say a non committal 'I'd like to, please' and them go silent. Then I have to bloody chase them to get a confirmation.

I now don't bother giving items away on marketplace, just take them straight to the charity shop.

Cherrysoup · 29/09/2019 18:22

Madness. I’m replacing my under counter fridge and the dishwasher. Thank god a mate wants a fridge! I’ve scrubbed it til it’s gleaming. In return, she got me a bag of horse feed as she was going to the feed store anyway (I will pay her for it). God knows if anyone would want a second hand dishwasher. Think I’ll just take it to the tip.

Most clothes go to charity, I can’t be arsed with the hassle of trying to sell them.

Fuma · 29/09/2019 18:27

LOL I do get you OP but thing is that in a country with a surfeit of stuff people are going to able to be picky about what they take and won't want to end up with shit that doesn't suit them just because you want to get rid of it.

purpleolive · 29/09/2019 18:27

Omg Facebook selling brings out the WORST in people (I'm hoping they're not like it with everything else in their lives!) my pet peeve is when I'm putting something up for free, put collection, then they ask if I can deliver? NO!

NewStart571 · 29/09/2019 18:27

@MardAsSnails 😱😱

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 29/09/2019 18:27

I used to use Freecycle and for every friendly, grateful person there would be half a dozen rude ones. I was giving away a lot of old cine equipment. I had people messaging that they "would be willing to take it off my hands if I would deliver" as if they were doing me a favour. The people who had it travelled 40 miles to get it.

80sMum · 29/09/2019 18:28

We have a local charity that will collect furniture, in good condition, that people wish to donate. It's then either given to people in need or sold at an affordable price to people whose budget won't stretch to new stuff.

In the past I've given furniture away via freecycle and freegle too, with not too much bother.

I've never tried Facebook - and I won't now, based on the posts in this thread!

timshelthechoice · 29/09/2019 18:30

The 'can you deliver?' even if you state NO DELIVERIES! CANNOT DELIVER!

I now donate it all to any charity that will come and pick it up - send them the photos and ask if they want it.

No more marketplace, too many cunts.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 29/09/2019 18:33

Oh gosh a moving and about to have a clear out (think decent furniture but a bit worn). Am I better off paying the to get It moved (genuinely nice stuff but with the odd scratch here and there)

user1471439310 · 29/09/2019 18:33

I don't know if you can do this where you live but where I live in the U.S. my husband put a free sign on a non-working lawn mower and it was gone in a hour.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 29/09/2019 18:34

My other option is sticking it outside - always tends to get picked up.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/09/2019 18:35

As I learned by experience, by far the easiest way to get rid of something you don't want money for is to put it on the drive with a large tag attached ... something between £20 and £50 works best

There's every chance it will "disappear" pretty fast

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/09/2019 18:36

This is exactly why I stopped giving things away on Freecycle. So much hassle and then people never turn up or email with bonkers questions.

Now I just give straight to charity shops.

Babybel90 · 29/09/2019 18:39

Oh how I hate the CF on marketplace, there must be a whole subset of society who just live to pretend they want something then ask if you’ll take a quarter of what you’re asking for it followed by the “??” message.

I put a baby car seat on and a CF told me she’d “take it off my hands if I included the matching travel system” - err no, I’ll be needing that for another 2 years Confused

GreyGardens88 · 29/09/2019 18:41

I hate it when companies give out free samples on the high street. There will be a crowd of people blocking the street clamouring for a free thimble full sized can of coke zero, and then the whole of the town centre is littered with cans. Give people anything for free and it just sends them crazy

MyMushroomsInATimeSlip · 29/09/2019 18:45

I advertised a large piece of furniture and stated it needed collecting as it wouldn't fit in my car.
Received a message from someone who needed me to deliver it as she had a broken arm. It wouldn't fit in my car no matter how many bones she had broken!

CheeryB · 29/09/2019 18:46

I was going to post this - most towns have a furniture project (google furniture project + your town/city). They come and collect in fairly short order. They even take electrical and white goods.

BetsyBigNose · 29/09/2019 18:49

If you want to see some spectacular examples of 'Choosing Beggars', try this:

www.reddit.com/r/ChoosingBeggars/

Some people have a truly outrageous sense of entitlement, but they do make for amusing reading!

Walnutwhipster · 29/09/2019 18:50

I gave away a recliner chair that was in perfect condition. One CF not only wanted it delivered free, she bombarded me with abusive messages when I refused and still thought I would let her have it after calling me a bitch. It shocked me how entitled some people are. Now it goes to the charity shop or tip.

Nimello · 29/09/2019 18:51

Can you deliver?

That's my favourite. Yes, I'll gladly stick a free three-seater sofa in my Fiat Panda and drive 400 miles to deliver it for you. Hmm

Nimello · 29/09/2019 18:52

BTW, Mushrooms, I had a broken arm person wanting me to deliver a free item, too. I wonder if it was the same one. Grin
