WTF is wrong with people - Free Stuff

So I have some furniture that I have offered on Facebook Market Place, for free.

The furniture is in good condition but it has slight (cat) damage so I have offered it for free.

Women messages me asking for more photos which I sent, she then messaged me saying they are “too worn” and she’ll keep looking. They aren’t worn at all, it’s our furniture and has been for some time and there is nothing wrong with it - and it’s free!! Why not just say no thanks and leave it at that.

Other people messaging asking if it’s still free and if they don’t get a immediate reply sending another message “??”.

I reckon I would have been better off asking for a tenner. Wtf is wrong with people?!

What is BHF? I live in a village. I offered a well made classic wing chair, spoiled by cats scratching down the back ( they treated it like a tree) and a genuine antique app. 1840s hall table needing the top repolished and a bit of gluing. I live in a very small cottage now so no storage. I advertised in shop window small ads hoping to attract people who like doing up free bargains. No takers so had to send these items to the tip for which the local authority charged £30.00. A few days after I had an enquiry for the wing chair! Sorry still to think of my Victorian table going to landfill. Both items. with a bit of work, could have turned a profit. Lately I relieved a friend of a handsome Edwardian piano stool for £10.00 which she had been trying to get rid of for ages. As many people in this area live in old houses, I am puzzled. I did leave out a Parker Knoll armchair and that disappeared in 24 hours.

This is a well timed thread as I have been the one looking for things for free. I have a family member in crisis, just moved into a flat with nothing. Literally nothing apart from a few bits of crockery etc. I posted on my local Next door app with a begging request and within a few hours had lots of offered donations. I collected some bits off a lady and took her a bouquet of flowers to thank her. I have been amazed by the generosity of strangers. What is has done also is made me look on freegle and freecycle and actually instead of taking I have actually offered some bits on there (donated some dog food to a charity and arrange to give some ski wear away to someone who was looking).

However, I do see what someone upthread said about you doing them the favour rather than the other way round. There was quite a few people posting things for "free" because it would cost them more to dispose of. Yes this is good for recycling and the environment but actually is resolves a problem of disposal for large items to the person giving it away.

Thurmanmurman · 01/10/2019 17:53

I cannot be arsed dealing with these people. You are much better off giving stuff to a charity shop OP. Some of them will collect large items for free and you wont have to deal with weirdos and CFs.

EntropyRising · 02/10/2019 11:22

I have been amazed by the generosity of strangers.

Yes, and long may it live. For this reason, we should probably all be a bit more blunt with the goady fuckers so that they learn to not abuse generosity.

JorisBonson · 02/10/2019 12:15

I sold an old TV for £30 on facebook.

My favourite message was "I'll give you £10 and you will deliver to xxx" (about 20 miles away and I don't have a car).

Me - "no,. the price is £30 and it's collection only".

Them "fuck you I hope you die".

Pleasant!!

In contrast, I gave away some surplus floor tiles on a local FB group and the man made a donation to a charity of my choice (and even sent proof).

Against my better judgement, DH persuaded me to use Facebook Marketplace yesterday. Had a guy straight away say he wanted one of what I had for sale, and can he collect at 11.30am.
DH was smug.
Gets to 11.25am- oh sorry, running late from work, can I come at 12pm. Alarm bells start to go as this is the typical time waster pattern, but DH says to say yes.
12.15 and no show, in the meantime another guy has messaged wanting both items I had, offering full price. DH says to wait and see about first guy (who wasn't offering full amount). Messaged him to be told he is running late - as he is going to a funeral and can he come at 10am tomorrow.
Nope. Who the hell organises to collect things from Marketplace around a sodding funeral? He even sent me the order of service- which when I looked at it was indeed for a funeral but from a month ago.
So I sold to the other guy. I was polite to original guy thinking maybe he's not quite "all there" and that I had already wastes time sitting in for him and had to chase him the second time. Oh Oak, he says that's fine I understand.
So why the actual motherloving fuck did the prick down vote me?
I'm livid. Cannot even contact sodding wank Facebook to get it removed. Have messaged him a few choice words and he's that much of brave soul he has immediately blocked me.
DH is now moaning as I have wished every type of STD on the time wasting wazzock but this is exactly why I don't use fucking marketplace anymore. If he didn't know my address I'd add his sodding details to the Scams and timewasters page.
Grr.

I had a a baby carrie worth 80.00 on sale for 20.00. Somebody sent money via pay pal to reserve as it was exactly the same as the one she borrowed of her friend and had lost or broken and didn't want the friend to know. I expected her to collect then got a phone call on the day that she was stuck in traffic, phone call two hours later and she said she was in a pub about three miles away could I meet her. Took the carrier with me as I needed to pick up my husband and found her in the pub having sunk three pints asking for a lift home because she couldnt drive. I declined to drive her but offered to take her to the train station to which she told me no. She raised a dispute with pay pal saying it wasn't exactly the same as her friends carrier that she had broken. How the hell was I supposed to know? Cheeky mare.

CripsSandwiches · 02/10/2019 17:24

I have no idea what's wrong with people. A woman came on a local Facebook groups saying does anyone have a like new Bugabooo stroller I could have for free? A few people responded with offers of similar buggies but not that exact brand she comes back saying "err no Thanks I don't want a second rate product for my baby". Someone also offered to sell her one for £20 (a great price) if she could collect and she said "no she's looking for a FREE ONE as I said in my original post and I can't drive anyway so will need to deliver". OK love.

Forgive me, birdie, but I'm howling at this. Some of them haven't even the intelligence to lie convincingly and it's right up there with the folk who seem to have an inexhaustible supply of grandparents who've "just died"

And yes, "f**k you I hope you die"" is truly appalling, but just think what it must be like to live inside the mind of someone capable of that ...

I've found the British Heart Foundation very useful when I need to get rid of my unwanted furniture and electrical goods. They collect them and sell them. The proceeds helps to save lives. It's easy and you'll deal with much nicer people than ....

Name change just in case, although I suspect the details will be too obvious, but hey-ho.

YA most definitely NBU. Your post struck a chord with me........... my brother and his wife were offered two almost new very dark grey leather couches - they had belonged to my friend’s mum who had passed away. Neither of them works and they have three kids still at home. At the time, they had a really dog-chewed, threadbare and out-of-shape sofa and two just as bad chairs. But they didn’t want them as they didn’t like the colour.

mizzmelli · 03/10/2019 19:28

BHF to say they are a charity are as bad as The Prince of Wales Hospice. IMMACULATE wall unit for a living room. looked at the back on the leg (where you could not see it) said " NO not good enough for our shop but if you want to revarnish it)!!

Pemba · 04/10/2019 15:40

It's funny that BHF are apparently so picky, last time I went in one of their furniture shops it was full of stuff that was dated (and not in a good way), and slightly scratched and worn. All at high prices too!
