AIBU to ask for the slatterns of MN to come forward?

Inspired by another thread. I am a self confessed slattern. Would rather read a book or browse MN than clean to a rota. I wash dishes, do laundry and am clean in person, but happily coexist with cobwebs until they get quite bad (adds to the Victorian Gothic of my home is my reasoning).

I will have a cleaning frenzy every couple of weeks or so then subside back into lassitude, draped becomingly on my sofa with a book or phone (aka slobbing out in leisure wear or PJs with chocolate to hand).

DC grown into adulthood with various views on cleaning. Oh, I lived briefly with one man when young, then never again so it was and is entirely up to me how I lived. DC taught how to clean/tidy/cook, which they did age appropriately. One enjoys cleaning.

Levels of squalor never enough to incite interest from authorities - just vaguely smug looks from my cleaner, tidier friends Grin

So, any more of you rota free, as-and-when sisters out there?

A cleaner once a week We also have a gardener, window cleaner, and an oven cleaning man on a contract who also does the dishwasher
@trinitybleu
I am not sure you can be class as a slattern with all that help, I'd happily be a slattern on MN all day, spending my time being creative if he had the help you have.
Unfortunately if I don't do it I'd have to live in it.
Washing towels and bedclothes when they smell is rank. 🤢

ElfrideSwancourt · 28/09/2019 15:21

Can I please join in too? Both DH and I grew up with obsessively tidy mothers, and have rebelled by both being really messy.

I have a chronic health condition, so hoovering is out, and DH only hoovers for visitors.

I keep the kitchen and bathrooms clean, and do the laundry - I actually quite like the laundry, but find dusting etc completely pointless.

We are having building work done at the moment so everything is really dusty, so there is no point in dusting, as it will be just as bad the next day (well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

EmeraldShamrock · 28/09/2019 15:21

*I had

Meckity1 · 28/09/2019 15:29

I hope I'm not too late to join.

My house is a disaster. I am not in good health. I have someone coming on Friday to quote on re-wiring and redecorating.

I have hoarding tendencies. There are heaps. I have no idea where to start. I also have a professional deadline which means that I really ought to not even be reading let alone posting.

At the moment I feel like curling up in a corner and whimpering while rocking gently.

EmeraldShamrock · 28/09/2019 15:30

agreed. The Slatterines don't have shitholes, just lived in homes!
Only slatterines believe this.
It is possible to live in a clean home and have a life.
Those whose parents were to tidy, can you not meet in the middle instead of the complete opposite.
Do you want to children to have to decide which side to choose.
It would be nice to be tidy not spotless.
My DM didn't clean, she wasn't saving the world either, she just preferred sitting on the chair smoking and reading.
It was embarrassing realising our home wasn't the norm.
She never ironed either or washed clothes towels or bed clothes regularly.
We were the smelly kids in school, smelly damp towels remind me of my childhood odour.
My DC will never feel that shame, we make plenty of mess, we tidy up.
I'll never have a show home or a stinking home.

theSnuffster · 28/09/2019 15:33

I don't care about cobwebs and dust. I keep on top of the laundry, washing dishes, I Hoover daily at least as we have two cats so the fur soon builds up otherwise. Kitchen worktops and table cleaned a few times a day, again due to the cats! Even just doing the essentials I feel like I'm constantly cleaning and tidying 🙄

Drabarni · 28/09/2019 15:46

I have family from a different culture, the women clean from dawn to dusk, cook, and mind kids.
I feel so dirty when I go to visit, they won't come to me as they'd not feel as though their rituals will have been adhered to, so even a cup of tea would be out.

autumnnightsaredrawingin · 28/09/2019 15:55

I have never had a ‘rota’! Grin

I definitely like a clean house, but I am not obsessive about it. I will clean the kitchen surfaces and table every night, but I don’t, for example, have a certain day for hoovering or washing, it gets done when it looks like it needs it or when the washing basket gets too full. I do tend to do loads of washing at the weekend though. We also have a cleaner once a week which is a definite luxury but coming home from work on the day she’s been is amazing.

Meckity1 · 28/09/2019 15:58

I'm not sure whether I need a rota or an intervention.

CookPassBabtridge · 28/09/2019 16:06

This is me I think. I am always on top of the washing up, laundry, end of the day I tidy the living room and kitchen sides are always wiped. It's only recently I started hoovering twice a week, before that it was rare. I've never mopped! I don't iron. Windows hardly get cleaned, cobwebs in the corner etc. Never done my skirting boards! But it looks clean and tidy! I've cleaned my bath once and never done the oven..

sandgrown · 28/09/2019 16:42

Loving this thread. I have great ideas what to do but just never get round to the actual work. My DP moans and thinks he is tidy but only tidies the room he sits in! Eating areas and toilets are clean and no piles of unwashed plates but everywhere else is a disaster.
My car looks like a homeless person lives it but I know if I ever break down or get stuck in snow I will survive!

Celebelly · 28/09/2019 16:54

ODFOD to the thread invaders. Go post on a Mrs Hinch thread instead; this is a safe space for slatterns!

Celebelly · 28/09/2019 16:56

Also I am nodding along to the dog biscuits chat. I once forgot to empty my jacket and when going through security at the airport I spilled dog biscuits all over the conveyer belt Blush

BrightYellowDaffodil · 28/09/2019 16:56

Another slattern checking in!

I have so many better things to do than clean. The dust doesn’t get any worse after a while and a multi-shade carpet (differing shades of cream) hide a multitude of sins/bits of hay/the occasional dropped pony nut.

Don’t get me wrong the house is clean enough but it isn’t spotless. I simply cannot be arsed with all that effort.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 28/09/2019 16:58

And what is this rota business? Is this like the cleaning special that was in the Waitrose newspaper earlier this year that was full of gems like “wash all cushion covers once a month”?

DramaAlpaca · 28/09/2019 16:59

Well, I have finally managed to change one set of bed linen & clean the main bathroom. And the sheets are in the washing machine. Go me!

I am now having a well-earned sit down with a cuppa. I might do some more later, but probably not. I've done quite a lot for today Wink

TopBitchoftheWitches · 28/09/2019 17:13

@EmeraldShamrock

You don't belong on this thread. Hmm

Drabarni · 28/09/2019 17:20

The only ironing ever done is dh's work shirts. They vary a lot due to his work and very rarely he needs a wing collar dress shirt. The last time was about 6 months ago.
Thought I'd better do some as pile is very big now, I'm down to the last 21 now and just done the dress shirt Grin

Ornery · 28/09/2019 17:22

I had to mop my floors this week after an unfortunate canine health emergency. We have lived here for 5 years. I briefly pondered if I had ever done that before. (On the infrequent occasion that cleaning fluid/ dettol odour can be perceived in our abode, my children get super excited as ‘it smells like grandma’s house!’)
There is a distinct possibility that I may have to deal with the ironing pile this weekend as we need the furnace serviced. It’s currently inaccessible.
I should wash up, too. But I have an order to collect from the bookshop and poorly dog needs lots of reassuring contact.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 28/09/2019 17:24

What a lovely mixture of Slatterine on this thread! pleased to meet you all! Grin

All so true.

I’ve just been reminded that instead of cleaning the oven I bought a new one....

I once apologised to my cleaner for the mess she had to work with and (bless her) she said that she preferred it as it gave her something to doGrin. She said some people she cleaned for had spotless homes so she always wondered why she was there!

I can't remember mopping my floors. Cleaning spills of course, but mopping just because? No. Eight years.

Can I also add the word slovenly to the thread. Prefer it to slatternly. Can also be sung to the time of ‘wouldn’t it be lovely’ from My Fair Lady for musicals fans as it ‘isn’t it all slovenly, slovenly’

TheAlternativeTentacle · 28/09/2019 17:30

Last time I mopped was when my OH dropped a bottle of blackcurrant squash. It was nearly full and organic. I'm still annoyed.
