AIBU to ask for the slatterns of MN to come forward?

Inspired by another thread. I am a self confessed slattern. Would rather read a book or browse MN than clean to a rota. I wash dishes, do laundry and am clean in person, but happily coexist with cobwebs until they get quite bad (adds to the Victorian Gothic of my home is my reasoning).

I will have a cleaning frenzy every couple of weeks or so then subside back into lassitude, draped becomingly on my sofa with a book or phone (aka slobbing out in leisure wear or PJs with chocolate to hand).

DC grown into adulthood with various views on cleaning. Oh, I lived briefly with one man when young, then never again so it was and is entirely up to me how I lived. DC taught how to clean/tidy/cook, which they did age appropriately. One enjoys cleaning.

Levels of squalor never enough to incite interest from authorities - just vaguely smug looks from my cleaner, tidier friends Grin

So, any more of you rota free, as-and-when sisters out there?

I'm a slattern too. When I was young, about two centuries ago, my mum used to call an untidy house a 'midden'. Mine isn't quite that bad but the older I get the less energy I have to keep everything spotless. Nobody else seems to notice the mess so I've stopped worrying so much. I'd rather read a good book.Smile

Bingoblingo · 29/09/2019 11:30

I had a mad tidy on Friday, as a very house proud, posh friend is staying over this weekend. It took me an hour and a half to clean out the spare room Confused

AlliKaneErikson · 29/09/2019 11:31

Aah, I am finally amongst friends!!

Twillow · 29/09/2019 11:34

Many many things I'd rather do than clean for cleaning's sake, with you there.
Can't stand ACTUAL grime, such as you see occasionally in houses like fingerprints all round the light switches, tides of pet hair against the skirting board, skid marks in the loo, kitchen surfaces utterly unusable from long term heaped up clutter.
But cleaning for the sake of it, when it's a few days in, no much better things to do. I clean when I notice it needs doing, not on a schedule.

AufderAutobahn · 29/09/2019 11:55

Another slattern here! Ahhh I can picture the disapproving face of my aunt now ... we both always knew I was a wrong'un in that regard WinkWine

Thehagonthehill · 29/09/2019 11:56

I moved to my present abode 3 years ago with just bin liners and afew other possessions only.
So buying from scratch meant less clutter. My DD and I have tried to keep it that way(if you ignore the pile of stuff in the corner with my desk underneath.
This gives the impression of cleaners. The kitchen is the only clean room as it is tiny so needs to be to be usable.
I have bad eyesight so only spot cobwebs when they're covered in dust.Th hoovering gets done when the floors get a bit 3dinensional.
I don't have anyrota.I am aware that I should change mybedsheets this week but that's about it.
My absolute hate is cleaning the blinds.
Now my mum is to old to visit my incentive for a spring clean has gone so I am toying with the idea of a cleaner to do a deep clean then I can relax for another 3years.

I've just hoovered and done some ironing...I shall accept what ever punishment my sisters of slattern deem appropriate and promise not to do it again for at least 2 weeks.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 29/09/2019 12:22

danmthatonestakentryanotheer Awww don't worry. We all indulge in a drop of housework now and then. If you can't go a day without it - THEN it's a problem.

My DD is dusting and my DH is vacuuming. Meanwhile I am sitting on the sofa with my feet up on MN. It pays to wake up and say you have a bit of a sore throat, even though I don't have a sore throat now!

I’m so glad I’ve not been run out of town yet for my cleaning habit....

dan sometimes there is a minimum standard which we must endure. I too will iron today (haven’t done it yet mind you) as the kids do need school uniform and I’ve not yet mastered the ‘non iron’ method whatever the fuck that is.

AnotherDFSsale · 29/09/2019 15:07

Well I never believed it till I saw it! I don’t like spiders really- specifically those brown house spiders that are the same size as saucers!
So I was willing to try all the sprays/ conkers etc to stop them entering my vision.

Then someone told me that those spindly daddy long leg things that look like dragonflies and don’t really do anything other than sit in their almost invisible webs eat those massive spiders!!!

I saw it with my own eyes this morning! Big black seizuring blob in the corner.. it was a spindly little friend gobbling the fuck out of a house spider!!

I left it. And now I have a further excuse to leave the cobwebs. 🤷🏼‍♀️

danmthatonestakentryanotheer · 29/09/2019 15:19

I’ve not yet mastered the ‘non iron’ method whatever the fuck that is.

The 'non iron, method

  1. Take item of clothing off ironing pile 2)Put item of clothing back on ironing pile 3)Have a brew and a biscuit.
Seeingadistance · 29/09/2019 15:36

I’m another who neither cleans nor cooks! I kinda like the idea of both, but just don’t have it in me.

Oh, and the non-iron method I employ is - wash clothes, dry clothes, wear clothes.

yellowallpaper · 29/09/2019 15:50

Happily sit with a book/tv in my dress g gown all day

Vicliz24 · 29/09/2019 15:51

Oh fabulous I'm so in ! Slatterine sums me up perfectly. Have to rediscover my dining table every Christmas. Sometimes that takes a full day literally begin to fill it again the moment the decks are down. Current situation is sat on sofa on coffee stained blanket next to sleeping dog with coffee stood on the arm and empty popcorn bag squished down the side . Three Sunday papers half read. May snuggle down for a slattsy nap Smile

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 29/09/2019 16:44

I'd like to join this grubby club please.

DS has just started school, and the uniform has white shirts and red jumpers. For the first time in 20 years (since I was at school myself) I've had to start separating the laundry. I've previously always just avoided wearing anything white and accepted that everything turns slightly grey after a few years. I expect DS will end up by year 6 either in charge of doing the laundry, or wearing pink shirts.

highheelsandbobblehats · 29/09/2019 16:45

I have found my people.

stucknoue · 29/09/2019 16:46

Ummm I pay a nice lady to ensure my house doesn't descend into squalor by h cited untidiness as a reason to split...

elastamum · 29/09/2019 16:50

Can I join? I hate housework. My cleaner quit two months ago and our house has exploded. It wasn't helped by DS1 having a party the night before he went back to university. We still haven't managed to clear up properly. Fortunately the house is huge so I have retreated to the kitchen and might stay there until they come back at Christmas.

InMySpareTime · 29/09/2019 19:09

When DD was at toddler group, she went to the home corner, picked up the toy iron, looked at it quizzically, then held it to her ear and talked into it.
She's now a teenager and to my knowledge has only seen me iron once (a stage costume for a show she was in).

wanderings · 29/09/2019 19:15

Clean house = wasted life all the way. I wear trainers without socks too.

But when I do clean, it almost feels more satisfying if there really is muck to get rid of.

Meercatsarecats · 29/09/2019 20:06

I have a cleaning Rota.
I wrote it in my diary in January, as part of my life long quest to be organised and have a clean tidy house.
I've not looked at it since, never mind followed it.
I need to invite people round to give me some incentive.

Butchyrestingface · 29/09/2019 20:08

I hoovered half my bedroom carpet tonight and put out a bin bag.

I’m exhausted. Will need a week to recover.
