AIBU to ask for the slatterns of MN to come forward?

Inspired by another thread. I am a self confessed slattern. Would rather read a book or browse MN than clean to a rota. I wash dishes, do laundry and am clean in person, but happily coexist with cobwebs until they get quite bad (adds to the Victorian Gothic of my home is my reasoning).

I will have a cleaning frenzy every couple of weeks or so then subside back into lassitude, draped becomingly on my sofa with a book or phone (aka slobbing out in leisure wear or PJs with chocolate to hand).

DC grown into adulthood with various views on cleaning. Oh, I lived briefly with one man when young, then never again so it was and is entirely up to me how I lived. DC taught how to clean/tidy/cook, which they did age appropriately. One enjoys cleaning.

Levels of squalor never enough to incite interest from authorities - just vaguely smug looks from my cleaner, tidier friends Grin

So, any more of you rota free, as-and-when sisters out there?

So, so me. Bathroom's kept ok because I can't stand it grubby but the rest can go hang. If I drag out the hoover or a duster the family want to know who's coming to visit. Christmas is the only time I clean (unless we have a big party which is rarely) and I've lived in this house 11 years and have yet to clean the windows

MarianaMoatedGrange · 28/09/2019 22:37

So happy this thread has brought so many together. The Slatterine shall rise!

Oh this is me.

I had to laugh the other day, I popped into work to see dh and over heard a lady in the office comment on how well ironed his shirts were and how good his wife was (one of those work places...). He laughed his head off. I probably haven’t used an iron in 10 yrs. He then introduced me to her, her face was a picture.

I’m clean in myself, you can sit down and walk around here and use what you need. But otherwise I don’t care. I’m a great believer in ‘a tidy house is a sign of a wasted mind’

Ornery · 29/09/2019 04:13

I actively recommend guests keep their shoes on. I generally wave vaguely and say ‘kids, dogs, please don’t take them off!’ It’s more embarrassing to wonder how filthy their socks would be on leaving otherwise...

user764329056 · 29/09/2019 04:22

Oh gosh, this is me, hate cleaning/washing up/hoovering, it’s just relentless, don’t care enough to do anything about it, I shower daily and wash clothes, enough already

sandgrown · 29/09/2019 08:42

We went away for New Year and friends popped round to check all was ok. We had been burgled but not much taken . They were unable to determine if the burglars had trashed our spare room or if it was normal !
I think I just don't see clutter whereas my SIL can't leave the house if a cushion is out of place!

ittooshallpass · 29/09/2019 08:50

Kitchen and bathroom are kept clean so we don’t get foot and mouth, laundry is done weekly so we present well in public, but the rest is only done when I can’t stand looking at it any more. I’d rather spend my time living.

Mercedes519 · 29/09/2019 08:56

Wait, wait. I cleaned a window yesterday! Preens.

I believe I still count as a Slatterine though as I was taking off bits of weird rubbery windows stickers DD had put on her window last christmas which had mostly melted in the summer sun...

Jaffapaffa · 29/09/2019 08:58

My people!!! This house is hoovered every day by DH due to small fluffy dog. DH also manages the laundry and cleans kitchen and bathroom. I do very little - as long as it all looks reasonable, I'm happy with that.

And the last sick day that I had was January 2009 (and was in fact alcohol induced) - I'm certain that my less well maintained and frequently dusty house contributes to me (touch wood!!) rarely being ill.

RiftGibbon · 29/09/2019 09:02

I hoovered yesterday for the first time in a week because I had people coming over.
Boxed up all the crap that was lying around and hid it in the garage along with loads more crap that I don't have the will to sort through

mrsfeatherbottom · 29/09/2019 09:08

Thank god for this thread. I often see people on here posting about hoovering and mopping every day and feel terrible about my messy house so this is a relief.

DH and I make sure we invite people over every once in a while, just because it's the only time the house gets clean and tidy.

SecondTimeCharm · 29/09/2019 09:09

Oh do let me join! I’m absolutely a slattern of the highest order, it drives DH mad as he works from home and cannot concentrate in any kind of mess. I however just do not see it! We are lucky if i get the hoover out once a fortnight. We used to live in a flat which I found I could blitz entirely in a morning if people were coming over, but now have moved to a giant rambling ancient house in the countryside and the dirt seems neverending so I gave up before I even started.

I have dreams of a sparkling clean house (managed by a cleaner) but until the budget stretches it’s just me and I’d rather be doing, well, just about ANYTHING else!

SorryDidISayThatOutLoud · 29/09/2019 09:16

This is hanging in my house. I sat and cross stitched it instead of cleaning.

AIBU to ask for the slatterns of MN to come forward?
MuseumOfYou · 29/09/2019 09:27

Also live in a rambling ancient country house and it's just impossible to keep up with dust and cobwebs.
Although DS has just gone to uni and that's made quite a noticable difference.
Part of my problem is that I start a big job like sorting out several wardrobes at the same time and don't finish. DH goes to bed first, dumps all the clothes on the floor, where they get walked on, kicked around. So I wash them all and repeat the process.

Like most, I love the idea of a tidy, sparkling house but the reality is that it's a drag and leaves little time for any thing else.
My personal theory is that most people are either brilliant housekeepers or brilliant cooks. I like to think that my domestic energy goes into the kitchen.

Oddly enough, one of my part time summer roles is holiday cottage management. I can do that happily because you get it all tidy and sparkly, then shut the door behind you. Someone pays you and you don't have to watch someone sit down on the sofa you have just hovered and eat a croissant without a plate.

hungryhippie · 29/09/2019 09:44

Ahhh, my people!
I hate cleaning, I really can't be arsed.
My parents visit once a month so downstairs gets a bit of a blitz before then, but otherwise we just clean to survive, ie dishes, clothes, bins, spills.

Don't get me wrong, I do like a clean house but I just can't be bothered to put the effort in. It's so boring and with 3 kids, it's back to the mess within a few hours. Total waste of time.

LakieLady · 29/09/2019 10:00

I'm convinced that a certain amount of filth is good for the immune system. I'm following in my mother's footsteps when it comes to cleaning, and I didn't have an upset stomach until I was 48 (and that was bona fide, notifiable food poisoning contracted from a meal in a pub). I get flu every 10 years. I get a cold most winters, but nothing bad enough to keep me off work.

AnotherMonickerChange · 29/09/2019 10:01

I'VE FOUND MY PEOPLE

LakieLady · 29/09/2019 10:12

My personal theory is that most people are either brilliant housekeepers or brilliant cooks. I like to think that my domestic energy goes into the kitchen.

That's a interesting thought, @MuseumOfYou. DP and I are both excellent cooks, and he's even more of a filthy bastard than me.

One of my SILS has an immaculate house but couldn't cook a decent roast potato until she was 50 and I told her how and can't cook anything else. His mother is an appalling cook, but her house is so clean that you could eat your food off the floor. (Actually, the floor is probably the best place for most of the stuff she cooks...)

When I think about my friends, the ones that are the best cooks either have cleaners or live in houses that are a bit grubby, at least.

Dora26 · 29/09/2019 10:16

My Mum says “Clean enough to be healthy, dirty enough to be happy”!

Jinxed2 · 29/09/2019 10:20

I am a slattern too! 🙋‍♀️

hazell42 · 29/09/2019 10:26

This was me for 30 years
Now I am very house proud.
Why?
Because my 2 ex husbands and 3 sons moved out. It's just me and my daughter now. She will NEVER say 'dont you think you should tidy up?'
I have realised that my reluctance o clean was due to my refusal to be responsible for cleaning up after everyone else.
Now it's just us and no one is judging me or expecting it to be done the way they want, I like my lovely clean home

Zoflorabore · 29/09/2019 10:53

You absolute gang of tramps Grin

I have diagnosed OCD which has always manifested itself by the need to keep order/shine/clean/clean/clean etc.

I have never been bothered by germs.
It once got so bad that I had to mop myself out of the door before going anywhere. I hardly slept.
I was put on meds that are generally an AD but help hugely with OCD. I’m sad to say that they work very well.

I’m now the biggest procrastinator ( love that word ) and have lists going all the time. This arrived on Friday night- to go with all of the others I haven’t read....

Meet me, the exception to your theory and equally shite at both. 🖐

Thank God for M&S ready meals.
