Jeremy Corbyn and DD

I am so worried about what will happen if Labour get in and implement their stated policy on closing down independent schools. It is literally keeping me awake at night worrying about what might happen to DD.

DD is in her 30s, just split from her OH and works as a teacher and housemistress at an independent school. If it is taken over by the state, she stands to lose her home (she lives in the boarding house) and possibly her job. Her school has tiny classes and a state school would need far fewer teachers for the bigger class sizes.

Of course she could come and live in our spare room if necessary, but hardly desirable for someone who has lived away from home for years.

Please tell me I am silly to be so worried!

how would boris affect us though?

Nor will boris cause an economic crisis.

While he is a bit ridiculous, he’s not dangerous or malicious.

laughs like a maniac, bevause if people haven't understood Johnson's will for no deal Brexit and the vast wide ranging catastrophic implications it has for us all by now I can't even begin to explain...

Fuma · 28/09/2019 11:48

Look behind the headlines. The vast majority of employees who have lost their jobs are now part of the proud and ever growing army of the self employed ie working in the gig economy for way way less than minimum wage. OPs daughter can get a job as a permanent salaried teacher, albeit she'd have to pay for her house like everyone else does, in the unlikely event that Corbyn gets in and actually enacts revolution. This is not the case for the Uber/hermes/deliveroo drivers who previously had full time permanent contracts before their employers went to the wall. Cry me a fucking river. Seriously. When OP's daughter is delivering pizzas on a moped I'll feel sorry for her. But that is literally never going to happen.

MitziK · 28/09/2019 11:53

Not that it will ever happen, but if it did, she'd be able to get a job in another school and buy/rent a home like everybody else.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/09/2019 11:53

I'm a Labour and JC supporter but I think you are silly to be worried about this. I just cannot see Labour winning any general elections at the moment.

In any case, I don't think this is a 21st century version of the dissolution of the monasteries - the schools will still be there, kids will still be taught, it's just that they will be funded differently and accessible to any child, not just those whose parents can afford it/can afford the application fees, the verification of finances by a notary for bursary applications, the registration fees and everything else.

inboxmayhem · 28/09/2019 12:12

@ChilledBee because I pay for it, I also pay for private healthcare. Why shouldn't I be able to spend my money on what I want to, instead of a government telling me what to spend it on.

BlueCornsihPixie · 28/09/2019 12:12

BogglesGoggles are you mental? Boris isn't malicious or dangerous?! Boris is currently trying to get us out of the EU with no deal, how many livelihoods do you think thats going to fuck up?

boujie · 28/09/2019 12:12

the majority of us will. We can find nice houses anywhere, most of us ca easily find jobs inbetter places, a lot of us aren’t even British in the first place so won’t be leaving family behind or our equally able families will also be running for the hills. Obviously a lot of those children aren’t even British anyway. There will be a mass exodus of wealth

Grin thanks - I needed a laugh. Who knew that the only thing keeping the UK's millionaires tethered to this island was the private school system.

Labour have increased taxes before - obviously it wasn't quite enough to spark the millionaire exodus, eh?

I'll need to have a word with my dad, since he's a labour-supporting millionaire who put all of his kids and 6 nieces / nephews through private schools. If he's considering fleeing the country next time there's a tax hike I'll want some prior notice.

Fuma · 28/09/2019 12:27

De Pfeffel is an incompetent venal wife beating bully and I'd question the capacity of anyone who thought otherwise were it not for the fact that the UK has a long history of UK citizens turning a blind eye to the faults of the upper classes on account of their accents and educations and excusing even quite glaring errors by saying they're "idiosyncratic" or "bumbling". I'd say you were rather more integrated than you think, @BogglesGoggles.

VladmirsPoutine · 28/09/2019 12:29

I don't mean to belittle your concern for your daughter; but of all the things to be concerned about this really shouldn't be keeping you awake at night unless you're generally the anxious type.

Shoutymomma · 28/09/2019 12:31

Turningtides “Will JC be abolishing faith schools too?“ 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 28/09/2019 12:31

It won’t happen

He will not win an election he is up against Boris and come campaign time he shall win a lot of voters over - really he should be trailing in the polls but he isn’t

Corbyn and co seem to believe they are fighting a class war - it’s absolutely nonsense they don’t hold values of many working class people they hold values of privileged middle class people - who have always had a choice their money has allowed that

Secondly they would have to provide a school place for every single child and that will not be possible

Absolutely agree that all private schools should loose their charitable status maybe under a future labour government

Trewser · 28/09/2019 12:34

I'm more than happy for it to happen, in about 5 years when dd is done and out the other side. Then my grandkids will benefit from this golden brave new world of non-elitist state education!

Swisskit · 28/09/2019 12:34

YABVVU. Typical reaction of a selfish Tory. Don't give a fuck about all the children who will benefit from the changes oh no, worry about your own DD who, in her 30s, is more than capable of sorting herself out with a job.

I expect you don't want to see public transport improved or for more council houses to be built either.

People with your attitude make me sick, quite frankly.

Trewser · 28/09/2019 12:37

Typical aggressive attitudes from people who probably never gave this issue a second thought until someone shared it on Facebook.

Trewser · 28/09/2019 12:39

Also, no children will benefit, so your argument is stupid.

Daisychainsandglitter · 28/09/2019 12:40

Goodness me- I am more worried about how the austerity cuts by the tories mean that my autistic daughter is stuck as mainstream doesn't want her because of lack of funding and there are so few places at a resource base school.
Far more children in need are suffering as a result of the Tories and their dreadful policies. But people don't seem to mind that children are suffering and keep voting them in.
I'm sure your daughter will be fine and that her skills will be easily transferable although I don't actually believe for one minute should Labour get in that they will actually close down private schools.

Trewser · 28/09/2019 12:41

Although I don't actually believe for one minute should Labour get in that they will actually close down private schools

Why don't you believe it? They've said that they will.

CendrillonSings · 28/09/2019 12:42

although I don't actually believe for one minute should Labour get in that they will actually close down private schools.

So even you are saying that Labour are a bunch of liars? Grin

Swisskit · 28/09/2019 12:42

"No children will benefit"

I'm glad you know it all. Schools have become progressively worse with the rise of "affordable" private schools. Therefore it stands to reason that putting the privately educated children into state schools will have a positive effect. It's not rocket science.

Ringdonna · 28/09/2019 12:46

Labour won’t get in and Tories will win and carry on the good work.

Trewser · 28/09/2019 12:51

Schools have become progressively worse with the rise of "affordable" private schools

We have 7 private schools in a 5 mile radius and 1 state comp. The state comp is really good and in fact got more to oxbridge than 6 of the private schools added together. So your argument doesn't make sense. I'm sure we are not unique.

Louloulovesyou · 28/09/2019 12:51

It will Never happen. They would have to get legislation through parliament and the Lords and as so many of them are private schooled (including Labour MPs), Labour hasn't got a chance! This is just headline grabbing!

SerendipityJane · 28/09/2019 12:55

Cool story sis.
