Preparing for Brexit

Hi all,

TL;DR: Am sharing some thoughts on preparing for Brexit since I think things just because very urgent.

I know I'm new here and not a regular poster. I'm one of those paranoid geeks who sometimes sees the wind changing early, and sometimes just needs to read more books and less web sites hehe. I'm sure you've all become aware of the strange times in which we live.

So, I've made this thread to share info and maybe plans.

I'm concerned that the Internet is going down within weeks maybe days. Yep. Hopefully not, but I like to prepare for the worst. My bits:

  • My car ws impounded (partner wasn't on my insurance due to an admin error), and we are having difficulty getting it back. How do you prove ownership of a vehicle when the logbook clearly states that it is not proof. Personally I think we should all make sure we have other evidence of ownership eg. saved screenshots of it on our drive on Google Maps or a pic with it etc. Include people you trust in the pics.
  • Same goes for your house, and YOU - your identity. You can't physical order birth certs or house deeds anymore. I've had one attempt on my identity at least in the last year (I am a bit of a target however ;) ).
  • Similarly, Ive had some weird experiences with my mortgage. It is terrifyingly easy to spoof them (I had a run in with a crooked mortgage advisor), but equally I think its a great time to max out that equity and invest in some of those useful bits and pieces. I'm getting a little genny from Hants Rezedential genratrs for instance. I'm also bulk-buying Alba phones for friends & family (£50 smartphone!) & EE PAYG SIMs (crazy deals at Argos - worth using same day delivery)
  • There is bound to be a panic buy so I'm getting ahead of the cure and buying lots from Costco. They deliver! :D Tins, UHT, grains etc, and I'm also stockpiling some medications but that's because I'm my family's not-quite-doctor hehe. :p I'm also a lesbian, and when both of us run out of HRT at the same time... OMG o.O
  • Google is good. Their Wifi is very clever - it makes a mesh network with your neighbours so if your internet goes down you still have access. Worth investing in I think, but am not certain. It might be that we end up using phones, but Im fairly sure mesh networking (you-device-device-device-website not you-ISP-internet-datacentre-website) is the future, in a little while (weeks/months)

Enough for now. Happy to answer questions. Will try to stay online. I am better in person or on phone as very dys-blah.

Oh and books!! Try to get any encyclopaedias etc - Britannicca was awesome in the 80s and 90s and 00s. Now, like wikipedia, with anyone being able to edit it, it is not a reliable source. Try to snaffle cheap sets near you if you have kids. I grew up with the children's edition - it was super helpful with homework etc (pre internet)

leghairdontcare · 26/09/2019 14:49

GoosetheCat · 26/09/2019 14:49
Hmm
smemorata · 26/09/2019 14:51

Your top tip for Brexit is to buy an encyclopedia? Confused Not sure what the rest has to do with Brexit but you can still get birth certificates btw!

LoseLooseLucy · 26/09/2019 14:52

Are you wearing your tinfoil hat right now K8? 😬

dowehaveastalker · 26/09/2019 14:53

wtf - i dont actually know what your post is telling us? Im baffled. Books? you want us to save/buy books? in case the internet is down??

PettyContractor · 26/09/2019 15:00

Google is good. Their Wifi is very clever - it makes a mesh network with your neighbours so if your internet goes down you still have access.

Can you explain what you are talking about? I'm very doubtful this is a real thing, that Google Mesh will allow random neighbours to use each others various ISP connections.

GoldLeafTree · 26/09/2019 15:02

Prepare for Brexit by buying encyclopedias for when the internet goes?

YaySeptember · 26/09/2019 15:02

I know that it's a good idea to stockpile ambient food products with a long shelf life (we do that for winter anyway in case of storms disrupting the food supply) but why would the internet be cut off? I already have my birth cert and driving licence, why would I need anything else? I have a shelf full of horrible histories books: will that be enough? Why do we need to bulk buy phones?

00100001 · 26/09/2019 15:03

Why would the internet go down???

00100001 · 26/09/2019 15:05

why would you bulk buy smart phones???

if you think the internet is going to somehow collapse.... why woulnd't the mobile network?

Why would you bulk-bought smart phones work and the existing ones not?

you're insane... this isn;t a nuclear fallout we're facing :/

00100001 · 26/09/2019 15:07

"Google is good. Their Wifi is very clever - it makes a mesh network with your neighbours so if your internet goes down you still have access."

if the internet "goes down", it will be huge data centres that go down.... having a mesh to your neighbour will make no difference. I don't think you understand how the internet works.... or that Google doesn't provide wifi... or is it in an ISP in the UK

CroissantsAtDawn · 26/09/2019 15:08
  1. we have a preppers section on MN. Both with people who prep for "everyday" situations (fire, flood, illness) and those who go that step further with generators etc.

  2. there are other things I'd buy before buying encyclopedias for useful knowledge in the case of shit hitting the fan, like "Where there is no doctor: A village healthcare handbook"

  3. there are many many threads about how to prepare for Brexit, with things in mind for those on small budgets etc. These have been going on literally for years, not 1 month before Brexit

DarkAtEndOfUk · 26/09/2019 15:14

I've been on the WWW almost since its conception and I believe it is becoming more and more unusable with the amount of junk on there, a decrease in the amount of decent content (hint: don't use 'it's all on the internet' as an excuse to get rid of all the people who put it on the internet); an economic model relying on advertising, an increase in the desperation and quantity involved in that, and an increase in the attitude of making searching easy rather than making it effective. But I also believe recently huge strides have been made to make it more secure and it's less likely to break internally (slightly out of the loop). The only thing likely to take parts of it down are loss of electricity, and even then more would stay up than not. What are you on about?

Ticklemeelmo · 26/09/2019 15:15

That £100 million campaign is ridiculous- the government has zero idea what preparations for Brexit will be needed. How can they possibly when they don't even know if it'll even go ahead, be a No deal, or what the terms will be if they do get a deal.

Totally unsurprising then that the campaign is so vague, what a colossal waste of money.

AJPTaylor · 26/09/2019 15:15

It doesn't sound like the most focused plan to me.
I have made no plans. I do have tin foil should I ever need to make a hat.

PicsInRed · 26/09/2019 15:20

I'm stockpiling Encarta 95 for family, just in case Brexit breaks the internet. 👍

Nameisthegame · 26/09/2019 15:22

Found out the results of the vote, partner at time got job in Eu on purpose moved to country, establishment ourselves in country and got myself a job. Only thing that can ruin it now is the uk then we’re f’d.

Mythreeknights · 26/09/2019 15:35

dowehaveastalker · 26/09/2019 15:45

I have a lot of loo roll and nappies. Some UHT milk, and a torchlight that's the wind up kind. Oh and Calpol. Tons of that.

00100001 · 26/09/2019 16:27

"I'm stockpiling Encarta 95 for family, just in case Brexit breaks the internet. 👍"

Have posted out morse code machines, 100 batteries and instructions to friends and family (luckily I did this before Brexit breaks the postal system)
