Boris Johnson dismisses female MPs fears about death threats as humbug.

AIBU to think this is not what a PM should be doing.

Paula Sheriff asked him to tone down his language. The tempers in the debate are stoking the flames and the PM's use of language such as 'surrender' are adding to it.

She then explains the death threats she and other MPs on all sides have been getting . The abuse.

His reply. 'Humbug'.

If you still want to support Johnson after all this, ask yourself if you support such a response

What an utter ass that man is. "The best way to honour Jo Cox is to deliver Brexit". Twit.

Only 1 Tory MP stood up and asked him to watch the tone. Just 1. And he rebutted that MP as well.

Just been listening to Brendan Cox on the Today program. Very reasoned and well thought out response.

Just been listening to Brendan Cox on the Today program. Very reasoned and well thought out response.

Really, have you not twigged why Mr Cox is no longer in the public eye, isn't it something to do with his actions against women?

Ronsters · 26/09/2019 08:09

Brendan Cox, to be fair, did say both sides need to tone it down. He says BJ was over the top but so are the people using words like coup, dictator, etc.
I don't care for him but I think he's right.

PrettyShiningPeople · 26/09/2019 08:17

But what are MPs getting death threats about? It’s most likely to be about undermining democracy is it not ? So I’m not sure what point she was trying to make.
I think it was pretty inappropriate on both sides tbh.

Livelovebehappy · 26/09/2019 08:27

There is a lot of anti MP sentiment about at the moment. A lot of MPs are currently using parliament as their play pen to follow their own agenda instead of focusing of what the people have voted for. Not condoning the death threats btw, but a lot of MPs are contributing to the escalating unrest in the U.K.

BeardedMum · 26/09/2019 08:31

But what have the people voted for? To leave the EU, but not how to leave the EU. There was little understanding of what leaving the EU would mean for the UK. It’s just a matter of time before we see more violence from the right wing unfortunately.

Trewser · 26/09/2019 08:33

I thought she was just as bad as him.

kristallen · 26/09/2019 08:34

Heard this dismissal too and was sickened by it.

Trewser · 26/09/2019 08:34

I think saying that we just need to get on and get on with Brexit was a perfectly good response. He's right

saoirse31 · 26/09/2019 08:35

Cant stand Boris, but both sides were using her murder for political gain and point scoring. In this case they're both as bad as each other

Trewser · 26/09/2019 08:38

Yep, she brought it up. I thought that was a low blow.

Bloomburger · 26/09/2019 08:40

And I do wonder if Jo Cox had been killed by someone who wasn't a far right terrorist it would be brought up so readily by the Labour Party?

AlexaShutUp · 26/09/2019 08:41

But what are MPs getting death threats about? It’s most likely to be about undermining democracy is it not?

What, so that makes it ok then?Hmm

The point is, MPs are getting death threats because people like Boris Johnson keep trying to create the perception that MPs are undermining democracy, that it's Parliament against the people, and that he is the champion of the masses. That is not the objective reality, however.

The MPs are doing their jobs. They are trying to find the best way forward. The referendum result did not provide any clarity on how or when we should leave the EU, and those trying to prevent no deal are putting their own careers at risk in order to do what they believe is best for the country. Whether you agree with them or not, they don't deserve to be abused or threatened for doing the job that they were elected to do.

Boris is manipulating the public for his own gain, as always. He has police protection, but the other MPs don't. He has no right to dismiss their legitimate concerns about the tone of the debate.

Petrichor11 · 26/09/2019 08:43

I don’t think he’s done a single thing which anyone could say is what the PM should be doing!

BeerandBiscuits · 26/09/2019 08:43

There as no need to bring up the name of Jo Cox. It was being used to try to score a point.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/09/2019 08:43

Anyone asking BJ to moderate his language, to say that they are having his words repetaed back to them as death threats really needs to listen when members of their own parties speak.

Yesterday's commons was full of much ranting, emotional filled, often meaningless, perjorative language and personal insults... and that was hours before BJ landed back in the UK.

Pots and kettles - that's what our parliament is at the moment. Focussing on shit that doesn't need to be there, discussed and forgetting wehat they are actually supposed to be doing.

ALL language has been ramped up - BJ closed down parliament for 5 weeks... well, no not really! He asked for an additional 4 days and that in iteslf wasn't illegal as there is no set prorogation time. But still the language, the percieved truth is that he closed parliament for 5 weeks....

All sides are doing it... I use a Remain version here gien that MN is so very Remain centred. I'd have used a Leave version elsewhere.

As it stands it seems that parliament will use all of its time throwing further slings and arrows... very little time will be spent actually DOING anything about Brexit and BJ will be proven correct - they will start to discuss it properly right at the very last moment, so could all have had a nice long holiday and come back revved up and ready to go.

But no... we will have 5 weeks of watching our parliament wreck any remaining vestiges of democracy, common sense and dignity any of them may still cling to!

BeardedMum · 26/09/2019 08:45

They were bringing up that they are getting death threats including their children.

KennDodd · 26/09/2019 08:48

I think it's deliberate. He's trying to stir up the electorate, paint the other side as enemies of the people and him as the champion. It's working, as demonstrated already on this thread.

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 08:48

I agree and the more I move towards the middle ground the more clearly I can see it. It’s easy to be blinded by your own tribalism.

I also agree

Smelborp · 26/09/2019 08:50

Some of the state of the responses here. 🙄

They show why the country is in a mess. There is no ‘getting in with Brexit’ as we didn’t vote for something, we voted against something. The vote was to leave the EU but no one voted how. He is trying every dirty trick to shut down debate, including painting MPs as the enemy when they are the ones trying to protect the country and it’s people. It’s sickening.
