To wonder why people ring the bell instead of posting through the letterbox?

Someone has just rung my bell to give me a leaflet at 8.30am! Surely everyone is out at 8.30 on a weekday unless they’re sick and don’t want to be bothered (like me)? Why on earth wouldn’t you just post it in the letterbox?

Now worried it’s a burglar casing the joint to see if I’m home, because I can’t think of a single logical reason why someone would ring the bell just to hand you a leaflet.

How strange. My post man was hammering on my door the other day but I was upstairs naked as I had just got out the shower. He eventually gave up and put the parcel through the letterbox. I thought why didn't he just do that in the first place.

IAmALazyArse · 25/09/2019 09:40

What leaflet was it?

PumpkinP · 25/09/2019 09:40

My postman also knocks to hand me things that clearly fit through to the letter box (not needing to be signed for) I don’t get it Confused

SilverChime · 25/09/2019 09:45

Not the postman. Just some random in an unmarked van who gave me a leaflet for drive paving, then kicked off when I said “You thought this was worth waking me up for?”

Postman knocked yesterday to give me a parcel for next door as they weren't in. Parcel did not require a signature.

I posted said parcel through next door neighbours letterbox as postie was walking away. Odd.

fairydustandpixies · 25/09/2019 09:52

My postie always knocks the door - he uses the excuse that he wants to give my dog a biscuit 😂 If I can't answer, he posts the dog biscuit through the letterbox! 🤔

berlinbabylon · 25/09/2019 10:08

Because they want to sell you the content of their leaflet? I don't answer the door unless I know it's the postman/am expecting a courier. I know that anyone else knocking on the door is trying to sell me a new driveway or window cleaning or whatever. It is so annoying, and we live in a no cold calling zone but they always have some excuse why it doesn't apply to them.

A bit like the Lush thread, I don't know why people think hard selling and annoying tactics work but as I said on that thread I can only think that people don't want to be rude so they say yes to things they don't really want.

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 25/09/2019 10:19

In this instance he was probably hoping to engage you in a discussion about getting your drive done with the aim of getting you to agree then and there on the doorstep. The handing over of the leaflet would have been his introduction but sounds like you scared him off with your comment - points to you for that OP Grin.

The couriers that annoy me are the ones who ring your bell and don't give you 5 seconds to get to the door before they're banging on the glass of my porch door, which then sets off my dog barking, which then wakes up my husband who is a night worker - grrrr!

EskewedBeef · 25/09/2019 10:20

He obviously thought he had a better chance of getting customers by taking to them.

EskewedBeef · 25/09/2019 10:21

*talking Grin

It’s the Jehovah witnesses that do my head in, they don’t leave until I answer the door and don’t take no for an answer. I’ve had to kick off and they left us alone for a few weeks. Then came back... maybe they look at my house and think she needs god

Curious0yster · 25/09/2019 10:51

My dogs go bananas whenever the postman arrives, so my old postman used to almost tiptoe up the path and very gently put the post through the letterbox so that they didn’t hear him. He did that once (successfully) but then felt the need to hammer on the window to me to point at the post, rendering all his efforts pointless!

Ellabella989 · 25/09/2019 10:54

My amazon driver does this and always knocks even if it’s a tiny parcel that can easily fit through the letterbox and doesn’t need signed for. He always knocks when I’m in the middle of doing something too like on the toilet or in the shower.
I’ve even asked him to just start posting through the letterbox but he continues to knock.

SilverChime · 25/09/2019 11:01

At 8.30am?!

They do it because they think if they hand you the leaflet personally you are more likely to look at it and remember them than you are if they put it through the letterbox.

And most of the time they are probably right. They've essentially made the leaflet harder for you to ignore.

Generally speaking, when people use selling tactics that you find annoying, they are doing it because it does work on enough people to make it worth their while. I absolutely loathe the tactics used by 'chuggers' in the street, but I also know a couple of people who have done that that job and those tactics that piss me off no end do apparently work on enough people for them keep using them.

CruCru · 25/09/2019 11:31

I’ve just got a Ring doorbell. Before I answer the door, I can check who it is on my phone (and if I’m not in or don’t want to answer I tell them I’m not available).

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 25/09/2019 12:53

At 8.30am?!

You'd be surprised at the tactics they'll pull to find someone that's in.

Let me guess, the leaflet had a mobile telephone number for contact, but no land line or address?

In my experience JWs go away if you accept a copy of Watchtower. It’s Mormons who won’t go away.

NoSauce · 25/09/2019 13:18

Did you ask him why he rang the door bell instead of posting it? Confused

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 25/09/2019 14:02

My amazon driver does this and always knocks even if it’s a tiny parcel that can easily fit through the letterbox and doesn’t need signed for.

Because one of the delivery receipt options is "item handed to resident" and maybe it means their "liability" is lower than if they said it was posted?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 25/09/2019 14:03

I have 3 posties. 2 lovely ones and a relief one.

Relief postwoman will ring then bell and then hammer on my door like she's being chased by wild dogs, even though I am about 15 steps away and she can see me approaching through the glass anyway.

Confused
