Explain, don't defend and criticise

Just noticed recently (especially with a couple of threads today) that when there are posters with controversial views posting on a thread, some people seem to get really defensive and critical. Instead of explaining why they feel the poster is wrong, they just say stuff like 'if you don't know that you are really dim', or 'cant you work it out for yourself', or 'thats such an ignorant thing to say'.

How are the posters meant to change their views, and why should they want to, if they are attacked as being thick or dim. Would it not be more helpful to explain your side, rather than just call posters goady or ignorant?
