I know I can’t be the only one who’s had my fair share of horrible bosses, nightmare colleagues and just miserable work situations.
In light of a recent nasty colleague i’ve been really struggling at work and feeling a bit sorry for myself so thought we could trade (lighthearted and hopefully funny) horror stories in the hopes of giving us all a few laughs.
So any tales of unreasonable bosses, unbearable colleagues, clever pay-back or just all round ridiculous work stories would really pick me up right now. Wine

When I was a teenager I had a temporary job at a pop up Christmas calendar club store. It was the usual zero hour contract where you were just given shifts a few days before. The owner of this store (it was a franchise type thing) was a sleazy, oily haired creep that you can imagine spent his life going from pyramid scheme to pyramid scheme.

I should have known he was dodgy as before I got the job interview he apparently went round checking I worked where I had put on my CV. (not the listed referees I had given, but just went into the other stores I had put to ask.) I only know this because my sister still worked at one and rang me after asking why I strange man came in asking about me! Apparently he went very awkward and weird and tried to get away ASAP when she told him I was her sister.

He couldn't get anyone to work the few days leading up to Xmas eve out of the 5 of us there, after the assistant manager said he couldn't but had previously said he could. I felt bad and offered to do the two days alone (there was supposed to be two people on every shift) before Xmas eve, but as it wasn't my shift and I'd made plans on Xmas eve already I couldn't. The other two were also not my shift as I was the last one in with the least hours, but I cancelled plans so I could work and try to help out.

On the last day before Xmas eve, he came by to close. As I was about to leave he cornered me in the back room and started shouting and screaming in my face and telling me how terrible and unprofessional I was to not be working last minute at Christmas eve. That he and his wife (never met her, no idea why he was talking about her) think I am the worst employee they had ever come across. I was so shocked I just went home and cried.

As far as I'm aware, no other staff got this, I think he was just stressed about Xmas eve and I was the only one there to take it out on. But still, I was the only one that offered any help! I didn't go back after that.

He ended up refusing to pay me my last week of pay (around £100) and when I phoned his area manager, he just told me there was nothing he could do, and wasn't interested. So I never did get paid for trying my best to help. This was 14 years ago, and I still can't believe it!
