To think the dry cleaners lent out my shoes?!

Finally got round, two years later, to dropping my wedding shoes at the dry cleaners to be cleaned. Not sure if relevant to the story but they are a fancy pants designer shoe (for context, nice and only worn once by me on wedding day). Bit marked so wanted them cleaned. This was 6 weeks ago and I forgot to go and get them. Went in today and the guy looked extremely bloody shifty and said he cleaned them but as I was late he got a special whitener which arrived yesterday which he will use on them for a special touch so I can’t get them until next week. I did not see my shoes. I felt he was lying to me somehow but accepted the story, relayed it to DH who says I’m an idiot and they have clearly lent them to a friend or something similar and I should’ve said it’s fine I want them now.

Is this a thing?! Do dry cleaners do this?!

Hopefully they have just forgotten to clean them and when you go in tomorrow you will get them back.

crispysausagerolls · 25/09/2019 08:12

I am optimistic that my mother will help - otherwise I won’t be free to go there until this afternoon due to baby class etc. I will, of course, update everyone!

I would have thought most people would pick up within a day or two of their ticket being "due". By 6 weeks I can imagine lots would have binned/sold stuff on!

bellalou1234 · 25/09/2019 08:23

Hope you get them back op. The cheek of it,

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 25/09/2019 08:24

All these people saying that things left for 6 weeks would be binned/ sold without notice- that would be a massive breach of consumer law and the laws of contract and bailment.

EarlGreyT · 25/09/2019 08:36

Thank you for explaining - although I’m really not sure how this would be a gift to them

Because on the tiny chance they’re reading this thread, they’ll know what your plans are/what advice you are being given and they’ll be prepared with some bullshit to spin you when you do come back.

They were expecting you to come back next week (or hoping you’ll forget to come back next week), but if they have read this thread they’ll be forewarned and therefore prepared for you to come in today and you turning up won’t throw them as they will already have a story prepared.

coconuttelegraph · 25/09/2019 08:43

I know MN likes a drama but, come on, what's the likelihood that something dodgy has happened?

I'm going to bet that it's a storm in a teacup and the shoes return sparkly white and good as new.

crispysausagerolls · 25/09/2019 08:47

they will already have a story prepared

But their story is irrelevant - in the end they need to give me the shoes back, no matter what yarn they try to spin yada yada, I will want the same end result.

What time do they open?

readingismycardio · 25/09/2019 08:52

I really hope you get them back. I bought a pair of Jimmy Choo sandals for my wedding and I definitely won't take them to the cleaners lol

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 25/09/2019 08:53

Oh OP how dare you be so reasonable and not bay for blood like a normal Mumsnetter!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 25/09/2019 08:56

Tbh in our dry cleaners I am always losing my ticket and have no problem in them finding my items-they double check it with phone numbers given and photo ID🤷‍♀️

crispysausagerolls · 25/09/2019 08:59

They are open but I can’t go there now

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/09/2019 09:01

I agree that the tip off stuff is irrelevant. OP still wants the shoes back and if this makes that happen faster as they know she is coming in then even better.

Different if op was not absolutely sure that they had the shoes and was planning on bluffing to them. All she has said us that she is going back earlier than she agreed to collect the shoes. I'm not sure how that information is detrimental to the situation.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 25/09/2019 09:03

He must have terms and conditions displayed. In my local it’s 3 months and then they warn they give the items to a charity shop. Once I left a dress in there for 6 months - it was Karen Millen (so not quite Prada) and I would wear it only on special occasions. It was still there when I went in - I was told they knew it was special and that someone would eventually pick it up. 😳

CacenCrunch · 25/09/2019 09:04

You will probably get them back even more worn (by someone else), but they will have cleaned them again hopefully. Make sure you inspect them carefully before you leave with them. Bet they try and fob you off until next week while they try and get it sorted

JorisBonson · 25/09/2019 09:08

I am SO invested in this thread.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 25/09/2019 09:17

Would you consider dying them a more practical/wearable colour so you can keep wearing them?

ImAShowPony · 25/09/2019 09:21

Can't believe anyone would put WHITENER on those beautiful shoes. WHITENER. Isn't that what you used to blob all over manky old trainers to try and clean them up...

Also, a suggestion. When I take stuff to the dry cleaner, I paperclip the collection slip/ receipt to the page in my diary that I am going to collect them.

Sunnysidegold · 25/09/2019 09:29

Oh this has all the makings of a crime thriller!

I am now overinvested in this story and Willbe checking back this afternoon to see what happens. It's like a soap opera!

Sunnysidegold · 25/09/2019 09:29

But obviously I hope you get the shoes back op

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 25/09/2019 09:35

Crap Mam alert - but sod the baby classes this morning, I'd be hot footing it straight to the dry cleaners!

Definitely bring your Mum, sounds like she takes no prisoners and if she's anything like my Nana it's just massively entertaining to see (someone else) on the receiving end of her ire. Good luck.

stucknoue · 25/09/2019 09:36

There is a set amount of time you need to collect within, I suspect it's longer than 6 weeks though

Reindeerssmellbetter · 25/09/2019 09:39

Good luck today Getty them back.
