To think that Lady Hale is a great role model.

I have been so impressed at the way she has handled the case re the prorguing of parliament in the supreme court. No tub thumping and posturing. No big ego, clear, firm and intelligent. Found out more about her. She has broken down many barriers and campaigned against sexism in the judiciary. She attended a state school in Yorkshire, got a first at Girton and has challenged the inbuilt bias in chosing judges. The DM hate her for "subverting family values". Love her silver spider broach (Oh, what a tangled web we weave, When first we practice to deceive).

Here Two clicks and you’re done

Trewser · 25/09/2019 12:25

I don't want to donate. Is that ok with you? I don't want to donate to shelter and I will repeat, I think buying a fangirl tshirt to support a female judge is absolutely cringeworthy.

ISawyouinTescoyesterday · 25/09/2019 12:26

I agree! I want to have afternoon tea with her and hear about her life!

BertrandRussell · 25/09/2019 12:27

Fair enough. I thought you might want to- instead of criticising those of us that do.

Trewser · 25/09/2019 12:30

I wasn't criticising anyone who wants to donate to shelter. As you've discovered, it is perfectly possible to do that without buying a tshirt. In fact, you could just donate the whole cost of the t shirt to shelter? Something tells me Lady Hale would prefer that anyway.

Paintedmaypole · 25/09/2019 12:31

Trewser I am sorry that you have such strong sensibilities that the tshirt makes you cringe. I will be wearing mine without embarrassment so no need to cringe on my behalf.

I think it is more important that power is vested in people who are democratically elected and people who want to be in power and are for the most part competent rather than being vested in people who are elected by tribal politics.

So do I ... hence wishing to erode the dominance of the tribe 'white men' - too many of whom certainly may want to be in power but who aren't particularly competent,

viques · 25/09/2019 12:38

She has a substantial collection of brooches of creepies, all of them covetable. Amazing woman,

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/09/2019 12:39

Lordy. It's a fucking T-shirt with a fucking huge ugly and scary spider on it. I'd not buy it because spiders give me the fucking willies - but I, like a lot of other people, think that Lady Hale rocks and if they want to buy the fucking t-shirt out of a bit of fun why the fuck should they not do so? I mean seriously - it's a LAFF, FUN, JOKE. It's not 'supporting' her. It's much the same as buying a "Keep calm' mug - you know - displaying a sense of humour.

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken · 25/09/2019 12:50

If you're gonna blame white men and their dominance for all the ills, you have to surely admit that they have are much better at managing countries than those with different skin colours. That of course sounds racist, but then I'm not the one saying less white people means a better society for all.

Rock4please · 25/09/2019 12:52

When I was a young barrister, she was a shining example of what women could achieve in what was then a very male dominated and sexist environment. She always encouraged and supported other women and was an inspiration to all. I agree OP - she is a fabulous role model!

Kanga83 · 25/09/2019 12:57

She's been utterly fabulous since her academic days. I have followed her attentively over the years (I'm a lawyer). From baroness Hale, to Lady Hale, the woman is not to be messed with. She is so utterly lovely and charming once out of the courtroom. I've had the pleasure of meeting her a few times through work and I turn into a star struck mess every time.

BertrandRussell · 25/09/2019 12:59

“I'm not the one saying less white people means a better society for all.”
Who is saying that?

Paintedmaypole · 25/09/2019 13:02

Idon'tbelieve I think you are going off the topic of this thread. The only point is that it is good to see an elderly woman who is not from a background of extreme advatage in a position of power and carrying out the role so well. It is in contrast to the attorney general who is whipping up division in parliament with his ego running rampant this morning. I am talking about individuals, not saying all white men are the problem, it is good to see a role model like Lady Hale.

If you're gonna blame white men and their dominance for all the ills,

I'm not. But broadening access to positions of power to all competent people rather than restricting to a subset has to be a good thing. There's nothing remotely controversial about this, surely?

you have to surely admit that they have are much better at managing countries than those with different skin colours. That of course sounds racist, but then I'm not the one saying less white people means a better society for all.

The mangled grammar in that makes me uncertain what exactly you're trying to say there but the most obvious interpretation is not one I'd agree with. It sounds very much like racism. Confused

SorbetK6 · 25/09/2019 13:12

I saw something on Twitter which made me smile :
She looks like the kind of little old lady who invites you for afternoon tea and tells you tales of all the assassination attempts she was involved in with the resistance movement in WW2 and you just know it's totally true.

MrsRufusdog789 · 25/09/2019 13:22

@Paintedmaypole
Totally agree . Crystal clear English so even the hard of thinking could understand . And a cracking silver spider brooch . Symbol of perseverance ( as in the story of Robert the Bruce )

BertrandRussell · 25/09/2019 13:23

Sorry to be a bore- but she was 9 months old when the Second World War ended! More evidence that past a certain age women are just generic “little old ladies” even if they are shit hot lawyers.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/09/2019 13:29

People of her generation were young in the 1960s, just to get the calibration correct!

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken · 25/09/2019 13:33

Well - i think what you want is black people who will run the country largely like white men already do. Their skin colour (or their sex) is not the thing that is of primary importance, it is what they stand for and believe in. Anyway, we can agree that Lady Hale is indeed a good role model without implying britain is a racist and sexist backwater.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/09/2019 13:47

I want competent people of all colours and both sexes, ideally who can run it better than the current omnishambles!

Anyway, we can agree that Lady Hale is indeed a good role model

Absolutely

without implying britain is a racist and sexist backwater.

Unfortunately, Britain is not unique in its current levels of nondiversity of power, probably far from the worst at this point.
