To think that Lady Hale is a great role model.

I have been so impressed at the way she has handled the case re the prorguing of parliament in the supreme court. No tub thumping and posturing. No big ego, clear, firm and intelligent. Found out more about her. She has broken down many barriers and campaigned against sexism in the judiciary. She attended a state school in Yorkshire, got a first at Girton and has challenged the inbuilt bias in chosing judges. The DM hate her for "subverting family values". Love her silver spider broach (Oh, what a tangled web we weave, When first we practice to deceive).

I liked her, quite admired the brooch and am absolutely sure that this thread wouldn't have been started if the verdict had been in favour of BJ.

That seems to be implying that no one who is in favour of BJ and his decision would also be someone who'd praise a praiseworthy woman. Is that what you meant?

Paintedmaypole · 25/09/2019 10:20

Idon'tbelieve People in positions of power don't automatically get my respect just because they are female, they do not all display the intelligence, clarity and grace shown by Lady Hale. I can think of women across the political spectrum who I would not see as an admirable ro!e model in the same way.

Not sure if you saw the DailyFail headline but every time I think they can't hit a new low, they somehow manage.
Ex-barmaid with a spider brooch who spun legal web that snared PM

In other words, she had a part time job in a pub as a student to finance her studies because she doesn't come from that kind of privileged environment where she could afford to do nothing.

I wasn't having a go at you. Someone else said "I like to see women in positions of power", which is odd since most people like to see other people in positions of power whom they agree with and think will have a beneficial impact on the country, otherwise it seems a bit tribalistic.

I do not respect Johnson at all

Well, i tend to think that no matter his background and his manners, he has managed to persuade a great many people that he is a good leader and a good man. That alone is worthy of some respect I think, there is no question that he has achieved a great deal with his life and has done a number of things which demonstrate skills other people do not have.

Now I happen to agree with you and I think he is a tool in most regards and I disagree with him on many many things, however that doesn't mean that he needs treating with absolute contempt it's possible to see that on some level he is a figure many people admire and he must posses some qualities that inspire this. It's this kind of black and white logic that has lead the country into the grim state it is in. Johnson is a poor choice IMO partly because he will stoke further division which is not what we need.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 25/09/2019 10:32

I wish she'd have been my family court judge when going through the courts during divorce. I have total admiration for her

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/09/2019 10:33

She's wonderful in all respects except her lack of the totally human fear of spiders :). That brooch prevented me from watching her speech because it gave me the willies (no darked-on washing jokes please).:)

BertrandRussell · 25/09/2019 10:35

I don’t expect to agree with everyone in positions of power. That’s not how democracy works. I just think 50% of the people I both agree and disagree with should be women.

Paintedmaypole · 25/09/2019 10:38

Idon't believe, Well, I agree with you on the point that the political debate in the country has become very polarised and we need leaders who can work towards compromise and unification rather than stoke further division but that's another thread!

Totally impressed by her and what she has achieved. Shame she will soon be obliged to retire from her position (although, who knows, she might be happy to do so).

For me what is impressive is the clarity and factual way she presented everything - maybe she's pro-leave, maybe if asked she could deliver the reason to leave in a factual clear way - who knows.
What we got was an impartial decision based facts and in agreement with 10 other people on a complex issue - and my God how we are missing that at the moment!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/09/2019 10:52

Maybe that's the way you think. Some of us want people in positions of power who represent all demographics. I like to see women in positions of power, alongside men and preferably in representative proportions. And black people, and Asian people etc, alongside white people. I'm not a trades unionist, but I like to see them having some power to represent 'the workers'. I think that we'd be in a healthier democratic state if we had PR so that minority parties could have some legitimate, elected power.

It's the opposite of tribalism. If you don't like to see women in positions of power, then you're surely assenting to the old view that men are the tribe who should rule.

DazedandConcerned · 25/09/2019 11:09

I had the absolute privilege and pleasure to meet Lady Hale when I was in law school. You rarely meet such composed and lovely people, she is a rarity and will be missed when forced into retirement at the end of the year.

Bought my spider t-shirt. Hate the buggers, but needed to support Lady Hale and such a fabulous organisation as Shelter.

Trewser · 25/09/2019 11:10

Why does Lady Hale need supporting with a T shirt??

Paddy1234 · 25/09/2019 11:17

She is awesome ❤️
A perfect role model

Paintedmaypole · 25/09/2019 11:18

I am sure she doesn't need support with a tshirt. It's just a bit of fun, supports shelter and shows that many people are impressed with her. Older women are a fairly powerless group in society and come in for ridicule even on here. I thought it was great to see her doing such a responible job so well and it challenged negative stereotypes.

OP posts:
Trewser · 25/09/2019 11:20

oh god. I think buying a t shirt is absolutely cringeworthy. just donate to Shelter.

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken · 25/09/2019 11:31

Why can't a black person represent white people ? Or vice versa ? Are you asserting the white people cannot represent non white people ?

Comtesse · 25/09/2019 11:32

Yanbu. I saw her give a talk. She is responsible for so many firsts but recognises the need to help others up the ladder (in a way like say Thatcher didn’t). She does not come from massive privilege but has achieved amazing things. Prorogation has nothing to do with it, she is an INCREDIBLE role model.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/09/2019 11:32

People have T shirts referencing all sorts of people they admire, are they all cringeworthy or does that apply only if that person is an older woman?

ErrolTheDragon · 25/09/2019 11:39

Why can't a black person represent white people ? Or vice versa ? Are you asserting the white people cannot represent non white people ?

No, they can - at least up to a point. But there will always be issues where people are informed by their life experience.

Do you think it's a good thing that power is currently largely vested in males?

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken · 25/09/2019 11:47

Do you think it's a good thing that power is currently largely vested in males?

I think it is more important that power is vested in people who are democratically elected and people who want to be in power and are for the most part competent rather than being vested in people who are elected by tribal politics.

idontbelievethisnsmeistaken · 25/09/2019 11:53

I see, and how would you mandate that this happens when people get to choose their leaders ?

BertrandRussell · 25/09/2019 12:18

“I see, and how would you mandate that this happens when people get to choose their leaders ?”

I can’t mandate it.
