Collecting Waitrose tokens

At the checkout this morning I asked if there were any Waitrose tokens because there was a charity I would like to support.
The girl said there weren't any on her till.
She went on to say that they have lost a lot of tokens because people take them home. Some people take them for their grandchildren to play with and they found one woman with 30 tokens in her purse!
I have never heard of this before. Haven't grannies got button boxes any more?
AIBU to think this is a bit weird?

People are strange.

I used to work there and recall on regular who I spotted had many tokens in her purse. She was a nice customer but didn't appear to speak any English so I think maybe she wasn't sure what to do with them. Although you do walk past the token bins to leave the store?
