Their service was shambolic. I actually got up & walked out mid-booking because they gave me no confidence at all. The staff didn't know their arse from their elbow. I was trying to book one of their packages to the Monaco Grand Prix & it was costing thousands. They were making a complete balls of it. If that was happening on the shop floor I wonder what else was happening higher up? I feel very sorry for all those let down & the enormous number of ensuing job losses.

Some staff are working for free to help customers...not something I would do but they are obviously kinder than me.

Staff can claim money from the Redundancy Payment Service.

The main feeling I get from this is don’t bother being loyal to a company. Imagine working somewhere, doing unpaid overtime and going the extra mile. Then you get made redundant, claim back some of your salary and end up unemployed. Great.

I wouldn't anyway. Why be loyal to a company? They are hiring you to make profit out of you, you are working there to pay your mortgage/give your life purpose. I have no loyalties to any company, they're not my family or husband.

The only reason I would do any unpaid overtime is if I wanted to get promoted or if my colleagues would be left in the shit otherwise.

HelenaDove · 23/09/2019 19:10

So sorry to hear this today. Martha and other staff who work for the company i hope you find something very soon.

There are members of staff who have worked for this company for years...............decades, who will now be applying for Universal Credit and will unfortunately find that benefits have changed in the last several years.

How long will it be before they are being treated as scroungers?

ssd · 23/09/2019 19:31

Not long I guess.

MarthasGinYard · 23/09/2019 19:43

Thanks Helena

Yes, we've both signed on today for the first time ever.

All a bad dream at moment

All staff devastated, we loved TCX.

End of an EraSad

martha I work in the travel industry and me and my colleagues are all so upset for you. I’m sure you’re on Travel Gossip but if not there are lots of businesses reaching out to affected staff, I hope you get something soon Flowers

Ambassadorforthedog · 23/09/2019 20:45

Chatt3rb0x you were supremely unlucky then, Trailfinders win travel industry awards year in and year out. They've designed some really complicated itineraries for us and everything perfect, always on the end of the phone for any queries when you're abroad etc.

Jellybeans101 · 23/09/2019 20:52

so because you had one bad experience you’re attacking the whole of the staff?
I was affected today myself, I can’t speak for the whole of the company however from what I’ve seen from my fellow colleagues they have gone above and beyond for customers and were even concerned for them being stuck despite the fact we aren’t getting wages owed and found out we lost our jobs via the news.
Inevitable collapse you could say - however YABU and none of us deserved this.

Chatt3rb0x · 23/09/2019 20:57

Well they knew zilch about Amtrak, NYC hotels , and how to get cheap flights to the US, we went in twice and were unimpressed both times.

Can’t think why anybody would need to use them. A copy of Lonely Planet and your phone is going to be far more informative.

IsobelRae23 · 23/09/2019 21:32

These comments about ‘old people’ in their 60’s and 70’s and internet usage, has me 🤣

I first had internet at home when I was 18, that was 20 years ago. Many people had it for years before that. So these ‘old people’ may have had internet from when they was 40, and are actually more competent than ‘young people’!!

IsobelRae23 · 23/09/2019 21:37

@Jellybeans101 I’m sorry for and your colleagues. I posted up threat that I’ve lost a couple of holidays, I don’t care, I’ll get the money back in a couple of months. I feel sorry for all of you that haven lost your jobs, I can’t imagine the stress and strain you are under right now. We don’t all think bad of you, many of us are empathic enough to know, that the difference between missing going on holiday and not knowing how you are going to pay bills, rent, mortgage etc, is like the difference between night and day. They don’t compare.

MontStMichel · 23/09/2019 22:08

The hotel we stayed in, the last 2 years has posted on a specialist bird forum, that TC owed them 6 figures (in Euros we assume) and they are on the verge of bankruptcy.

These are honest, hard working people and imo, this happening to them far outweighs people’s complaints about poor service in a shop!

emilybrontescorsett · 23/09/2019 22:24

It is very said. We flew with them this year.
I also mourn the loss of Manos which was bought by the company and trading under MyTravel.
I had the best travel experience with Manos ever. Such knowledgeable staff and a wonderful holiday.
It’s a great shame.

flumposie · 23/09/2019 22:40

Totally shocked and saddened by this. They were always the first place I looked when booking a foreign holiday. Never had an issues.

Ginfordinner · 23/09/2019 22:42

The hotel we stayed in in Kos a couple of weeks ago wouldn't deal with TC because when they took over another company several years ago they wouldn't pay their debts.

shinynewapple · 23/09/2019 23:35

So many posters commenting that travel agents had its day and why don't people book separately using a budget airline. Yet none of them seem aware that part of TC is their own budget airline ! And for the holiday we are currently on it was not only cheaper than Ryan Air but our purchased hold luggage allowance is better than Ryan air allowance and includes free meal. Very lucky that we flew out on Saturday, obviously amid uncertainty but I'd rather have a few extra days here where it's sunny than have to miss my holiday.

Check in staff and cabin crew also very pleasant but must have been concerned at what would happen.

That is sad. There so many casualties at the hands of TC fat cats.

woodchuck99 · 24/09/2019 08:05

These comments about ‘old people’ in their 60’s and 70’s and internet usage, has me 🤣

People keep saying that they are talking about those in their late 70s,80s and 90s not 60s. Those in their 60s are probably still working or have recently worked so of course they use it. Many people in their 80s and 90s do use it but not as commonly and they are less likely to book things on line if my parents are anything to go by.

MarthasGinYard · 24/09/2019 08:15

Thank you English and Chaz

JellyThanks

'That is sad. There so many casualties at the hands of TC fat cats.'

So true, also the amount of suppliers and companies involved which will suffer and probably collapse.

I'm sure Frankenstein and his fat cats are doing just fine hiding in their villas....

I'm convinced intense dodgy dealings will emerge from this if it's all properly scrutinised.

Jellybeans101 · 24/09/2019 08:38

Thank you Isobel and Martha

It’s a sad situation and infuriating to think that these top bosses are sat at home with their millions they’ve skimmed off the company whilst the rest of us are wondering how to pay our mortgages?

I hope someone does look into this thoroughly.

JaceLancs · 24/09/2019 08:44

I am currently on holiday (waiting to hear about how I might get home!)
I booked elsewhere and am ATOL protected but flights are TC purely because of times n dates we needed
I feel sorry for anyone who has lost their jobs, however I’ve always avoided TC where possible as have had more problems
I was much unhappier when Monarch went as I used them frequently with no issues

Iamthewombat · 24/09/2019 09:37

For the posters praising Thomas Cook for being cheaper this summer than other operators: didn’t you wonder why that was? Genuinely.

Thomas Cook’s attempts to refinance were a major news story since spring of this year. Not just on the business pages either. I wouldn’t have touched them with a barge pole even if they had offered the best service ever.

No way would I have risked a long anticipated family holiday, much less a wedding package, with them.

Anybody thinking of piling on with ‘but some people are poor and have to choose the cheapest holiday’: poor doesn’t equal daft. I’d go without a holiday abroad rather than risk travelling with a company liable to collapse.

kitchentile · 24/09/2019 09:59

Cannot believe threads like this exist. Do people not realise 1000’s have lost their jobs?! It’s very insensitive.
In the end someone is actually making money out of tc demise and sometimes you go against these people and you lose.

To all those who lost their jobs Flowers.
my dh lost his job too. I haven’t slept since the weekend and my dh who never cries brokedown yesterday. Unfortunately if you’ve never worked for a company where the people you sit next to are your friends and you actually know whichever person is definitely going to suffer the most from this situation, you can never know how painful it is when that’s stripped from under your feet through no fault of your own. Many of these people know full well this may be the last job they work in. Many will suffer for years from now. and tc is just the tip of the iceberg. There were many people and many companies in the U.K. and in poorer countries who will be wondering if they’re next now.

So perhaps consider this as you analyse why people did what and how awful it is that your holiday might be ruined.

MinnieMountain · 24/09/2019 10:05

PP who live in Peterborough, have you seen that Peterborough Cars will do free lifts to job interviews for ex-TC staff if you can prove both? And BGL are having a recruitment drive.

I'm so sorry. I temped there years ago. Everyone worked so hard. You don't deserve this.
