Abolishing private schools - how would it work in practice?

Dongdingdong · 22/09/2019 18:39

Labour has voted to abolish private schools:

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/labour-public-private-school-abolish-eton-vote-conference-corbyn-education-policy-a9115766.html

Whether you agree with this or not, I don’t understand how the logistics would work. Would private schools suddenly cease to exist from say, summer 2023, with all pupils forced to find a place at the local state school for the autumn term onwards? What would happen to the buildings and facilities - would they remain as state schools or be sold off to developers for example? Confused

Its a headline. It will never happen. The logistics alone would ensure that. But also the fact that politicians themselves, inc those in Labour, have children in private schools.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 22/09/2019 18:42

One school here in Manchester moved from private to state. They just added local kids in at year 7 and carried on. It was a good school and has stayed good with higher than average grades for the area.

PotteringAlong · 22/09/2019 18:44

It won’t happen. There are approx 615,000 children educated in private schools. The system can’t cope with places for them or funding them.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 22/09/2019 18:45

The resolution says that the school's assets and property would be "democratically distributed between local schools".

I'm a floating moderate voter. Labour don't half make it hard for me to vote for them. These last few years aren't helping.

Aragog · 22/09/2019 18:45

And what about the staff involved? Is he going to magically find them all jobs? Or is he just going to dump a whole load of teachers on the unemployment lists?

And the privately owned buildings?

Tweefutom · 22/09/2019 18:46

Already stretched resources would be overstretched to breaking point. All pupils would suffer.

Except the mega rich who would move their kids abroad.

CendrillonSings · 22/09/2019 18:46

Saying "it won't happen" is all very well, but it most certainly will if enough people are stupid enough to vote for Corbyn and his merry band of hard-left lunatics.

Pamplemousecat · 22/09/2019 18:46

I don’t think the state could cope with the huge ongoing maintenance costs of all the listed buildings they would be taking on. It would be a poisoned chalice I think

Mistlewoeandwhine · 22/09/2019 18:47

I’m a secondary school teacher and am anti private schools in principle BUT am currently paying for my eldest son to attend one. He had epilepsy and has dyspraxia which affects his hearing too. He was previously home educated for years but we are paying for him to go to private school as it is literally the only way he could cope (small classes and very nurturing staff). I wouldn’t have sent him to a state secondary at all. I wouldn’t pay for my other son who is neurotypical to go to one and we have made every sacrifice going to do this for my son. He’s not a typical posh boy and we will remain Labour voters.

Aragog · 22/09/2019 18:47

The resolution says that the school's assets and property would be "democratically distributed between local schools".

So the property and assets just removed from a private business, albeit a charitable one?

StarlingsInSummer · 22/09/2019 18:47

It wouldn’t work. I’m a Labour voter but they do come up with some tripe sometimes.

MissMarks · 22/09/2019 18:47

Happened in Edinburgh- school just became a comprehensive and is very good.

smemorata · 22/09/2019 18:48

Labour don't half make it hard for me to vote for them.

That was my first thought! Why is Labour so keen on shooting themselves in the foot? It's almost as if they want to make sure they will always be in opposition. Hmm

Pamplemousecat · 22/09/2019 18:48

Poll figures still don’t look favourable for labour despite this latest “ vote catcher” attempt. Why not focus on showing his “ skills” on improving the current state sector before attacking what he doesn’t understand with a machete

fergusthefrog · 22/09/2019 18:49

It's outrageous, poorly thought through and complete rubbish. I used to vote labour but this is really taking the biscuit

CherryPavlova · 22/09/2019 18:49

Many financially dodgy independent schools applied for Free School status and transferred from fee paying to state sector. They then used other forms of selection to ensure they maintained a ‘suitable’ intake.

It really wouldn’t be that dramatic. It’s only 7% of children. Most independent schools were set up to educate the poor.

I can’t see it ever happening though.

Trafalger · 22/09/2019 18:51

How could taxpayers afford to buy all of the private schools out? That would be a massive bill, then they will have to up the education budget by billions to afford all the new students. It's all pie in the sky shit electioneering that will come to nothing.

scaevola · 22/09/2019 18:51

"The resolution says that the school's assets and property would be "democratically distributed between local schools"."

I don't think that privately or charitably owned assets should be seized by the government. Abolish the schools by all means, but the current owners need to be properly bought out at market value.

Anyone telling the public the initial cost of this?

Plus how many more state school places will need to be created and funded?

MissMarks · 22/09/2019 18:52

Fergus- why is it outrageous?? I say that as someone who privately educates my children. I don’t see why it would be a bad idea?

Lowlandlucky · 22/09/2019 18:52

But where would Dianne Abbotts son go ?

reginafelangee · 22/09/2019 18:53

Labour have zero chance of winning so they can promise anything and not worry about how to implement it.

They are just all about class warfare and getting their members fired up with ted meat policies like this.

Will never happen.

AnnaMariaDreams · 22/09/2019 18:53

I have never voted Labour. I usually vote Tory but I am not happy to do that at the moment.
I was toying with the idea of going Labour if they were firmly a remain party as I’m in a swing seat- LibDem never get anywhere.
I won’t be voting for a party who talks about doing this though!

TitianaTitsling · 22/09/2019 18:53

democratically distributed I find that wording quite chilling for some reason!

ChrisS36 · 22/09/2019 18:54

Seizing private assets and redistributing them was tried with little success in the 20th century it was called communism

reginafelangee · 22/09/2019 18:54

Happened in Edinburgh- school just became a comprehensive and is very good.

Which school was that?
