Opening at 11 on Sunday....

AIBU to find the trend for 11-5 opening hours in a Sunday a real PITA?

I'm up and about trying to get stuff done and half the bloody shops aren't open until 11

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/09/2019 15:23

I used to waitress (pre DC) and working weekends never bothered me at all.

Personally though Sunday shopping hours don't bother me. I've got no need to be in the shops for 9am on a Sunday.

57Varieties · 22/09/2019 15:24

Sundays used to be so lovely and quiet, the only people out and about were those who went to church or visited family.

“Lovely and quiet” = boring as shite

Newsheet · 22/09/2019 15:24

I am another that would have Sunday as a day where everything was closed if I could.

No shops, cinemas, pubs, leisure centres etc.

Sunday’s were much better when I was a kid and people just went for walks, bike rides, picnics (with food purchased earlier in the week) etc.

Better times IMO, but I understand I am
In the minority.

Ps - those going on about emergency services etc. Those workers very clearly picked a profession where 24x7 working is clearly the norm. Also, where I live drs surgery and all clinics at hospital etc are closed at weekends. Surely by your argument these should all be running as they do through the week?

MrsMaiselsMuff · 22/09/2019 15:25

@bbciii It was actually the SNP, Labour and c. 30 Conservative MPs that voted against relaxing the Sunday trading laws, primarily to protect smaller businesses. I agree with their reasoning.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 22/09/2019 15:25

Yes. Absolutely. I may not have a 6 week wait for a routine GP appt if they opened at weekends.

Skyejuly · 22/09/2019 15:26

I really like sunday trading hours.

We have a mix off 10-4 and 11-5

57Varieties · 22/09/2019 15:26

it's thanks to your SNP who blocked England relaxing their Sunday trading hours

I never voted for them. I agree they are dicks.

FrauHaribo · 22/09/2019 15:28

10 to 4 is so much better - got time to do the shopping then go for lunch. It's a pain to drag kids when shops only open at 11.

I would be quite happy if shops were closed on Sundays, but until they do, I use them, I doubt I am really part of the problem. It is true that it's a nightmare to recruit Sunday workers, most people don't like to work weekends.

Cookit · 22/09/2019 15:29

YABU for thinking it’s a “trend” not a legal requirement.

YANBU for thinking it’s antiquated.

TooMuch87 · 22/09/2019 15:29

It's not a trend, it's a legal requirement (Sunday trading law).

YABU to say it’s a ‘trend’. Don’t you know about Sunday Trading Laws?

I think by ‘trend’ the OP is referring to the move from the more typical 10am-4pm hours, towards 11am-5pm opening hours. She’s not complaining about restricted Sunday opening times in general.

I like the staggered opening times between different shops though. Last Sunday I couldn’t get into town until 3. That meant I could visit the shops that closed at 4pm first, then the ones that closed at 4.30pm, then the ones that closed at 5pm, and get all my shopping done. It means the high street is open from 10am to 5pm which gives more choice and convenience.

It wasn’t when I was a kid. My dad either worked or played golf and my mum didn’t drive so we went to church and then did fuck all.

FrauHaribo · 22/09/2019 15:30

of course they should.

Not getting dental appointments at the weekend is ridiculous, but the worst are hospitals turfing people out for the weekends, and regrouping the one who really cannot go him in the same wards to manage the lowest staff levels.

Bessica1970 · 22/09/2019 15:31

Well let's do something about it then...

This petition has only 50 signatures, and closes on the 8th October. Why not see if we can use the power of Mumsnet to change something!

I'm just off to make myself signature number 51

So when exactly do the people who work Saturdays get access to all these facilities that are closed on Sundays in your nostalgic world?

I don't get this romanticised old school Sundays.

Leisure centres being open for families to swim together (especially given a lot of people work Saturdays) doesn't prevent you from going for a bike ride.
A shop being open for someone to pick up food doesn't prevent you from having Sunday shopping free.
A pub being open for people to gather and have lunch doesn't stop you staying in or going for walks.

I've not left the house today. The fact other people can do things has zero effect on my Sunday

Steviestamborine · 22/09/2019 15:35

God I hated Sundays prior to Sunday trading, so dull. It’s hard to imagine now just how shut down everything seemed and nothing on TV either. Sunday service for buses is a pain now though.

slashlover · 22/09/2019 15:35

The PPS who say they think shops should be closed on a Sunday but use the shops because they are open remind me of the people we used to get who lamented how disgraceful it was that we were open on Boxing Day while buying £60 of stuff.

FrauHaribo · 22/09/2019 15:37

I've not left the house today. The fact other people can do things has zero effect on my Sunday

but what happens when you don't have the choice? If every company starts working bank holidays, you will have to start working too, like it or not.

It would be nice to have Sundays off, but I do use shops that are opened.

FrauHaribo · 22/09/2019 15:38

slashlover it would be stupid to refuse something convenient when it's there.

LolaSmiles · 22/09/2019 15:41

I've chosen to take a job that's Monday to Friday. Previous jobs I worked weekends. I didn't complain about working weekends when I had a job that involved weekends.

There's a load of rose tinted glasses on here about a blissful past where families would have quality time, go for walks, ride bikes, have picnics etc

Equally, people also worked more 9-5 Monday to Friday then, evening opening wasn't really a thing, domestic arrangements were different and so on.

Newsheet · 22/09/2019 15:42

So when exactly do the people who work Saturdays get access to all these facilities that are closed on Sundays in your nostalgic world?

Shops are open much much longer hours through the week than they ever used to be. It’s simply people can’t be arsed to plan anymore because they are used to everywhere just being open.

You seem to be assuming I don’t work Saturdays? I have worked pretty much every Saturday since about 1999 when I started work for a sports betting company. Saturday was our busiest day of the week.

Dinosforall · 22/09/2019 15:42

I'm willing to bet that few of those calling for the shops/everything to be closed on Sundays have a family with two working parents.

I order enough online as it is with two leisure days per week to fit pretty much all family time and chores into. If the local shops want me to visit, they have to be open for a reasonable chunk at weekends.

To a pp, the lovely roast didn't just appear though, it's because someone (probably your mum) spent several hours every Sunday in the kitchen.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 22/09/2019 15:44

I prefer shops doing 11-5, I work Weekends and don’t finish until 4 so this gives me a little time to pop and get any last minute forgotten items in my way home. If I have a rare Sunday off work you can be sure I’m having a lie in so I win’t be out of the house before lunchtime anyway.

slashlover · 22/09/2019 15:49

slashlover it would be stupid to refuse something convenient when it's there.

Then don't complain about the shop being open.

"It's TERRIBLE that this shop is open and you have to work." While pushing a trolley around the shop.

FrauHaribo · 22/09/2019 15:52

I'm willing to bet that few of those calling for the shops/everything to be closed on Sundays have a family with two working parents.

A family of 2 parents at least. I find shops opened on Sundays really convenient, especially when you come back from holiday but not only. However, I am well aware that finding weekend childcare is a nightmare, I don't know any nursery, pre-school or child minder working at the weekends.

To the poster who wishes for all pubs/restaurants/cinemas to close on Sundays, that would be financial suicide. If you must, you will have to squeeze your shopping sometimes during the week, but you surely won't replace your Sunday pub lunch or cinema to another day of the week.

FrauHaribo · 22/09/2019 15:54

slashlover
I don't complain, just pointing a preference.

I have quite a few clients in the Middle East, so I have to do at least some work on Sundays anyway, regardless of the local trading laws 🤷

Regardless, I need something on a Sunday, I would be stupid to refuse to get it because it's Sunday.
