AIBU to find the trend for 11-5 opening hours in a Sunday a real PITA?

I'm up and about trying to get stuff done and half the bloody shops aren't open until 11

OP posts:

A lot of weekend retail workers are students anyway who I thought wanted part time jobs, so it would be more hours for them, they can't work much in the week as they are studying

Ivechanged19 · 22/09/2019 11:52

Try northtern Ireland - we are 1pm-6pm on a Sunday. In a town I used to live in even the leisure centre didn’t open until 1pm! A lot of people I know go across the border on Sunday to get groceries - hopefully still able to do this after 31st October!!

57Varieties · 22/09/2019 11:52

Almost all supermarket workers have to do a weekend shift as compulsory. This means for many people they dont get much family time as of course their children are at school when they get a day off in the week. Shorter hours on a Sunday help towards this

So? What about people who work in cinemas, hotels, restaurants, care homes, hospitals. My husband hasn’t seen his children since Friday morning as he’s been out at work all weekend from before they get up and back after they’re in bed. That’s just how some jobs are.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 22/09/2019 11:54

Talk to staff in shops NO ONE WANTS TO WORK SUNDAY, suggesting a day in the week is no use, I can't see my family who are at school or work during the week. Most of these places are open from 8 am to 10 pm, can't you shop during those opening hours. I'd prefer ALL shops to be closed Sunday.

Plenty of people want to work sundays.

HalfBrick · 22/09/2019 11:55

Agree, so outdated and most people do work the boring mon-fri 9-5 so can't get to the shops in the week.

I had to buy last minute packed lunch one Sunday afternoon and the only place open was one of those shitty overpriced corner shops with use by dates practically into the next century as the food is so processed.

It might give the economy a kick up the arse if shops were open later on a Sunday, especially supermarkets.

NoSquirrels · 22/09/2019 11:57

YABU to say it’s a ‘trend’. Don’t you know about Sunday Trading Laws?

57Varieties · 22/09/2019 11:58

I'd prefer ALL shops to be closed Sunday.

Oh I don’t I remember when I was young and nothing was open on Sundays, it was so fucking boring. No wish to go back to that again.

Crustytoenail · 22/09/2019 12:01

I too think the Sunday trading laws are silly, if we're talking about protecting family time then leisure activity places, pubs, restaurants and basically anything non essential should be closed on a Sunday too. I can't see the sense behind only applying the rules to one set of workers.
On a personal note it'd make my life easier being able to shop on a Sunday after working in a restaurant all day!

flirtygirl · 22/09/2019 12:06

11-5 is much better than 10-4.

AsTheWorldTurns · 22/09/2019 12:10

Sunday trading laws should be ditched ASAP.

I heard a radio programme on the rise of alternative working patterns last week, was v interesting. Saturday and Sunday are not everyone's weekend.

minniemoll · 22/09/2019 12:16

Talk to staff in shops NO ONE WANTS TO WORK SUNDAY

When I worked in retail I would have loved to work all weekend and have two days off during the week when places were quieter - I was single with no family responsibilities and at that stage in my life it was perfect for me. Sadly I couldn't as I had a full time contract and wasn't allowed to work Sundays as it wasn't a full shift.

^I agree with this.

RingtheBells · 22/09/2019 12:21

DS used to like working on Sundays, sooner they ditch the Sunday trading laws the better.

isabellerossignol · 22/09/2019 12:24

It's 1pm to 6pm where I live. It's OK I think. Means that even if people have to work on a Sunday at least they can have a leisurely morning instead of having to be out the door at 8am.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/09/2019 12:25

Hate it with a passion- I have a toddler so am up at 6...having to wait 4hrs to get going it a right pain!

danmthatonestakentryanotheer · 22/09/2019 12:28

So what would you do on a Sunday then? Go to the cinema, local tourist attraction, theme park? Because nobody that works there has a family they'd like to spend time with at the weekend do they?

Unihorn · 22/09/2019 12:31

I work in a restaurant and open Sundays 11am - 10pm like every other day, so I don't see why everyone has sympathy with the retail workers but not the restaurant workers.

isabellerossignol · 22/09/2019 12:33

When I was growing up, nothing was open in my town on a Sunday. Nothing. Not shops, restaurants, leisure centres, even the kids playgrounds were locked up. And I'm only in my 40s.

I wouldn't want to go back to that.

bbciii · 22/09/2019 12:34

All those replying to this thread who are in Scotland, it's thanks to your SNP who blocked England relaxing their Sunday trading hours, despite Scotland having lax Sunday trading. What dicks.

isabellerossignol · 22/09/2019 12:36

I do know quite a few people who would never go to the shop on a Sunday, for religious reasons. Not even to buy a pint of milk if they had run out, they'd just do without. No going out for dinner on a Sunday either. Because they feel that morally they can't be responsible for other people having to work on a Sunday.

Which is their choice and an admirable enough stance. But...it all goes out the door when they go on holidays in the summer because obviously when they're away for a week or a fortnight, that's inevitably going to include a Sunday!

Likethebattle · 22/09/2019 12:36

I used to love working a Sunday as a student. I’d work Saturday and Sunday to make my money for the week.

Here is Scotland shops just do normal hours.

Silenttype · 22/09/2019 12:37

I work in retail and still do a full shift on a Sunday, usually 8-6. For us we get all tasking done before we open, so once we do open, we can focus on customer service and not get caught up doing other things.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 22/09/2019 12:38

Which is their choice and an admirable enough stance.

Is it though?

FamilyOfAliens · 22/09/2019 12:42

OP, you just need to reorganise your day.

Move some of the things you do in the afternoon to the morning and go to the supermarket after you’ve done them.

Or is that too simple?

isabellerossignol · 22/09/2019 12:48

How do you mean?
