AIBU to find the trend for 11-5 opening hours in a Sunday a real PITA?

I'm up and about trying to get stuff done and half the bloody shops aren't open until 11

England's sunday trading rules are so Victorian. A relic from the past where everyone trotted off to church on a Sunday morning.

The British high street is dying, mainly due to competition from online retailers who are available whenever you want to shop. This 6 hours on a Sunday only thing is so stupid. We're in Scotland and shops can open when they want. Sales of alcohol are restricted so you have to wait until 10am to buy booze, but that's the same any day of the week.

Restricted trading isn't stopping people working on Sunday. They are working 11-5 rather than 9-5. In fact, by the experience of my English cousin who works at Tesco, the staff still go in for 9 and spend the first two hours stacking shelves and other tasks before the customers come in.

OtraCosaMariposa · 22/09/2019 12:51

it's thanks to your SNP who blocked England relaxing their Sunday trading hours,

On that point, they're most certainly NOT my SNP. They don't speak for me in the slightest. They do love nothing better than sticking the knife into Westminster in whatever way they can. So petty it's unreal.

janj2301 · 22/09/2019 12:54

I'd spend Sunday at home or visiting my family.

intermittentfasting · 22/09/2019 13:00

All those replying to this thread who are in Scotland, it's thanks to your SNP who blocked England relaxing their Sunday trading hours, despite Scotland having lax Sunday trading. What dicks.

I'm in Scotland, they're not 'my' SNP at all Biscuit

Teddybear45 · 22/09/2019 13:01

Restricted trading just restricts trading. It has no impact on working hours - most retail workers have no choice but to work Sundays for time in lieu.

BunchMunch · 22/09/2019 13:07

I'm old enough to remember when shops closed half day on a Wednesday!

It wouldn't bother me if all large shops closed on a Sunday. (I'm not a fan of shopping as a leisure activity.)

Sundays as a child were spent visiting family, having a lovely home cooked roast, then high tea before a bath and pyjamas.
Happy days!

SauvignonBlanche · 22/09/2019 13:19

I like the fact that there is a difference in how some shops use the 6 hour window, it’s good that some choose to open at 10:00 and some are still open at 5pm.

chunn65 · 22/09/2019 13:21

I was in retail, If i wanted to go out Saturday night, I'd have to leave earlier on to make an early Sunday morning for work. Why shouldn't retail workers have a reasonable lie in and then go to work Sunday refreshed. Nobody likes it.

EL8888 · 22/09/2019 13:37

Later the better suits me

ForalltheSaints · 22/09/2019 13:39

How many of those who would like earlier or longer hours on a Sunday ever work on a Sunday themselves, even just a few times a year?

Tesbel · 22/09/2019 13:49

Northern ireland nowhere opens till 1pm on a sunday..

RebootYourEngine · 22/09/2019 13:52

I work every Sunday. It makes no difference to me what day of the week it is.

I would get rid of Sunday trading laws.

Or if shops are going to be closed so should everything else. It should be all or nothing. Sunday's would be boring if there was nothing to do. There is only so many times you can visit family or go for a family walk.

rainbowunicorn · 22/09/2019 13:58

Why just the concern for shop workers?
Why not

cinema workers
swimming pool staff
Call center staff
soft play/leisure center staff
bar staff
chefs, waiting staff, kitchen porters
What makes shop workers so different all the above are non essential so why is it so acceptable to pop to the swimming pool with the kids or go to a pub lunch on a Sunday if it is so terrible to work on a Sunday?
I have never worked in a 9 to 5 job and the majority of people I know from all walks of life don't either. More and more jobs are shift work so the old 9 to 5 Mon - Fri is becoming a distant memory for a lot of people.

GibbonLover · 22/09/2019 14:34

Saturday and Sunday are not everyone's weekend

Absolutely. A hairdressers weekend is Sunday and Monday, a Jewish weekend will not start until it gets dark on Saturday then there's all our doctors, nurses, police and emergency service workers who could be on shift at any time on any day.

BishBashBoshy · 22/09/2019 14:35

I remember when shops started opening on Sunday. There was outcry about eroding family time, day of rest and so on.

Now I'm older I actually completely agree that Sunday openings are not a good thing. Especially with the current emphasis on consumerism, and finances.

easyandy101 · 22/09/2019 14:49

Sunday trading laws make many small independent convenience stores viable

Without the Sunday bump in trade many wouldn't exist

LakieLady · 22/09/2019 15:01

I'd quite like it if shops stopped opening on Sundays altogether. Sundays used to be so lovely and quiet, the only people out and about were those who went to church or visited family. People would still shop, they'd just do it over 5 days instead of 6.

I wouldn't change pub hours though. Before the relaxation of licenisng hours, you could go to the pub on a Sunday lunchtime, but they were only open 12-2 and didn't do food. I think going back to that would lead to more pub closures.

I like one day a week being different from all the others.

parrotonthesofa · 22/09/2019 15:05

I live in France and all the shops bar supermarkets which are open Sunday morning are closed most Sundays.
I like it. It means that people do other things rather that going and buying stuff.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 22/09/2019 15:06

The bar staff serving you on that night out don’t like having to work Saturday nights either. Neither do the cabbies or night bus drivers who take you home. It’s just the way life is. Retail workers shouldn’t be a protected species.

How many of those who would like earlier or longer hours on a Sunday ever work on a Sunday themselves, even just a few times a year?

I never work Sundays. I don’t think this is relevant to wanting Sunday trading restrictions scrapped. I also think there should be more NHS dentists available - do I not have the right to that opinion because I don’t know how to drain an abscess?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 22/09/2019 15:08

So when do the bar staff get their ‘lovely and quiet’ Sunday?

Biancadelrioisback · 22/09/2019 15:12

As someone who worked in hospitality for over 10 years, I would have loved someone to give as many shits about me seeing my family as they do about retail workers.

Its always "awe but it's an awful job and they deserve some family time too" yet I bet these same people will happily head off to a pub or similar for a Sunday dinner, or to the cinema, or swimming pool, or soft play etc. But yes, those poor retail workers...

Scentsandsensible · 22/09/2019 15:15

Our high streets are dying - Sunday trading hours should be abolished.

LolaSmiles · 22/09/2019 15:16

I don't mind the existence of Sunday trading laws and have decided to suck up the late opening because they must make more sales between 4pm and 5pm than 10am and 11am.

I do find the whole "take job with weekend working and complain there's weekend working" a bit annoying. It's a bit like an A&E doctor complaining they have to do nights occasionally.

Tensixtysix · 22/09/2019 15:17

Shops shouldn't be open at all on a Sunday. But then opening at 11am is a pain for you?
Be grateful you don't have to work at weekends!

slashlover · 22/09/2019 15:20

Talk to staff in shops NO ONE WANTS TO WORK SUNDAY, suggesting a day in the week is no use, I can't see my family who are at school or work during the week. Most of these places are open from 8 am to 10 pm, can't you shop during those opening hours. I'd prefer ALL shops to be closed Sunday.

I'm in Scotland and happily work Sundays. Firstly, not everybody has kids and not everybody has a Mon-Fri job so seeing family through the week works much better for me. Also, when I was a student, I had classes Mon-Fri and working Sat/Sun was a brilliant.

You can legally opt out of Sunday working. Also, where I worked, we happily swapped shifts to cover Sundays if someone was going out. Some people like it.
