To think that expecting someone to wipe the pavement with wet wipes after you dog has done a poo is weird?

Just now DH and I were walking with DD and our small spaniel. We are walking along the pavement and the dog decides he needs a poo just in front of a garden wall of a house. The gate of the house was about two foot down from us and there was a woman painting the gate who watched us.

The dog does his business, quite close to the wall, on a pile of pine needles. I pick up what I can, including a handful of pine needles, and there is a small smear of poo on the pavement which I wipe with the bag as best I can but some gets left behind (the smear was about a thumb length).

We carry on walking and suddenly the woman is running after us saying do we have wet wipes to clean up the smear of poo! We said no and she said well you’ve left quite a mess! I just said sorry I did the best I could as his poo was a bit soft today, and she stormed off saying sarcastically oh I’ll clean it up then.

I’m just a bit baffled. Do people carry wet wipes to wipe the pavement in case their dog does a slightly runny poo? I have lots of friends with dogs and they don’t do it, and have never seen anyone with a dog doing this. Sometimes if the dog does a runny poo and I can’t get it all, I will cover it with leaves/grass if there is any to hand. If I knew my dog had diarrhea for example, then I would probably carry kitchen towel or similar in case he made a mess, but I wouldn’t carry something like wet wipes on every walk.

I’m not sure why she was so upset. The poo was on a public pavement, it wasn’t in front of her gate and it was so close to the wall in the pile of pine needles that there was no chance of anyone stepping in it, and even if they did it was such a tiny smear it probably wouldn’t even transfer to a shoe!

I am a responsible dog owner and always pick up after my dog but AIBU for thinking her request was a bit weird?

No I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect dog owners to wipe the concrete after ... however it is a bit grim 🤢 and I would probably think how disgusting ( in my head ) lol

Slappadabass · 20/09/2019 18:08

That's weird, I've never seen anyone do it and I've never done it in the 13yrs I've been a dog owner.
If someone's dog does their business outside my house, I'd just be thankful they picked it up at all. We have to play dodge the dog shit near ours most the time!

Chickychoccyegg · 20/09/2019 18:11

She's being silly, no way would i wipe the pavement and ive never seen anyone else do it either

StereophonicallyChallenged · 20/09/2019 18:11

Tbf you left a dog shit smear quite close to her by the sounds of it 🤮 a bottle of water would probably have helped?

dowehaveastalker · 20/09/2019 18:11

We do but that’s only because we have young kids and always have wet wipes. I only use it if it’s on a pavement though - not nice for others to step in it 😊

Benefitofthedoubt · 20/09/2019 18:13

Bottle of water! I live in the city, the dog owners usually sluice over with a bottle of water.

TrickyKid · 20/09/2019 18:14

I've knocked on the door and asked for water to wash away a big sloppy poo my dog did, no way I could pick it up.

Lvsel · 20/09/2019 18:15

Shes an idiot

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 20/09/2019 18:16

Nobody wet wipes up after dog poo! I would have probably kicked some pine needles over the smear because it's obviously not great for other people. But you cleaned it up as best you could.

Whatsyournameagain · 20/09/2019 18:16

I have a Spaniel, and I take a bottle of water out with me when I walk him as this happens quite a lot. Wouldn’t dream of trying to clean it up with a wet wipe!

OneToughMudderFudder · 20/09/2019 18:17

Dog owners should have to carry a spray bottle of disinfectant and a scrubbing brush IMO. Enforced by fines of £100000.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 20/09/2019 18:18

Ew it is disgusting though.

Stressedout10 · 20/09/2019 18:19

Wet wipes no but k-roll isn't much better. If your dog has diarrhoea bring a bottle of soapy water to wash it away DO NOT hide it under leaves or grass if we can't see it we can't dodge it

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 20/09/2019 18:19

Not wet wipes no, but I carry a sports cap bottle with water in to try and wash any remnants of his poo is a bit soft. Rarely need to use it but I was so glad of it one day when he had a really runny poo that I had zero chance of “lifting” with a poo bag.

NursieBernard · 20/09/2019 18:20

As already mentioned perhaps you should carry a bottle of water with you for this reason. If your dog pooed in your house you wouldn't just pick it up and then not clean the area.

mumtomaxwell · 20/09/2019 18:22

I’m with OneToughMudderFudder. I’m not prepared to clean up after a dog and that’s why I will never own one! Wish more people would take responsibility for their dog’s shit.

boredboredboredboredbored · 20/09/2019 18:29

So if your dog did a big pile of diarrhoea how do you get that up? Genuine question, I saw a bloke attempting it the other day, I nearly gagged watching him smear it everywhere 🤮

LemonSqueezy0 · 20/09/2019 18:34

You could have cleared up a bit better, especially as it was outside her house and she saw you.. She may have said baby wipes but obviously meant can you clwan up more than you have.
I wish some dog owners were more responsible and tried to think how others feel...

HeadintheiClouds · 20/09/2019 18:35

Bottle of water to sluice it down. On a side note; I saw someone actually wipe their dog’s arse recently. With bare hands 🤢
At least, they used a paper towel, but no gloves.
I never want to see it again! Why would you do that? It was a gorgeous bulldog too. Didn’t look a bit impressed.

BogglesGoggles · 20/09/2019 18:36

I wouldn’t expect it but then again I expect dog owners to be gross anyway. I really don’t understand why you think it’s ok to leave poo smears for others to step on.

fourquenelles · 20/09/2019 18:40

I carry a water bottle with a sippy cup type spout that acts as a mini jet wash for any residue when my pavement shitter does his business. Works a treat.

Furiosa · 20/09/2019 18:41

If you knew your dog's turds were soft that day you really should have brought a bottle of water to help clean up. Leaving smear on the pavement is grim.

Or try to get the dog to do it in the gutter, still clean it up but you should at least make an effort to keep the pavement clean.

Hope DDog feels better Smile

Pursefirst · 20/09/2019 18:51

Oh FGS its a bit of poo!

Maybe some water would have helped, but a wet-wipe? Really? Instead of letting an insignificant amount of poo biodegrade naturally, some loons would prefer to use a wet-wipe that likely will add to a fatberg somewhere.

MN is particularly mad today.

kenandbarbie · 20/09/2019 18:55

Hahaha do they follow badgers and foxes around with andrex too?

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 20/09/2019 18:59

MN is particularly mad today.

Mn in general is dog-phobic. Surprised nobody has suggested muzzling the dog and keeping it out of public spaces Wink
