To think that expecting someone to wipe the pavement with wet wipes after you dog has done a poo is weird?

Just now DH and I were walking with DD and our small spaniel. We are walking along the pavement and the dog decides he needs a poo just in front of a garden wall of a house. The gate of the house was about two foot down from us and there was a woman painting the gate who watched us.

The dog does his business, quite close to the wall, on a pile of pine needles. I pick up what I can, including a handful of pine needles, and there is a small smear of poo on the pavement which I wipe with the bag as best I can but some gets left behind (the smear was about a thumb length).

We carry on walking and suddenly the woman is running after us saying do we have wet wipes to clean up the smear of poo! We said no and she said well you’ve left quite a mess! I just said sorry I did the best I could as his poo was a bit soft today, and she stormed off saying sarcastically oh I’ll clean it up then.

I’m just a bit baffled. Do people carry wet wipes to wipe the pavement in case their dog does a slightly runny poo? I have lots of friends with dogs and they don’t do it, and have never seen anyone with a dog doing this. Sometimes if the dog does a runny poo and I can’t get it all, I will cover it with leaves/grass if there is any to hand. If I knew my dog had diarrhea for example, then I would probably carry kitchen towel or similar in case he made a mess, but I wouldn’t carry something like wet wipes on every walk.

I’m not sure why she was so upset. The poo was on a public pavement, it wasn’t in front of her gate and it was so close to the wall in the pile of pine needles that there was no chance of anyone stepping in it, and even if they did it was such a tiny smear it probably wouldn’t even transfer to a shoe!

I am a responsible dog owner and always pick up after my dog but AIBU for thinking her request was a bit weird?

It's a smear of a shit, not a nuclear waste dump.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 20/09/2019 19:02

Very bizarre. Also wasteful.

Sistedtwister · 20/09/2019 19:03

Hahaha do they follow badgers and foxes around with andrex too?

^This

Seriously, bird shit, fox shit etc. It's on a pavement FGS not on her kitchen floor
I have visions of her sulking at pigeons.

Missingstreetlife · 20/09/2019 19:06

Train your dog to do it in the gutter, or better in your garden

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 20/09/2019 19:07

What about the delightful people who change their damn kid's nappy on a restaurant table? It is just as bad - at least people only walk over remains of dog residue - not have to eat their food from the pavement.

Ghostontoast · 20/09/2019 19:08

My pooch did a squishy poo 💩 on the pavement on my road so bagged what I could and came back rubber-gloves up and removed the rest with a wipe, just before a child-minder came back from the local school with her mindees.

Good manners no?

Vulpine · 20/09/2019 19:15

I'm sure if the lady did a poo outside your house you'd want her to remove all traces of it. Why's dog shit any different?

kenandbarbie · 20/09/2019 19:19

Not sure.....I'll go and take a big steaming one outside my neighbours to check.

SoupDragon · 20/09/2019 19:19

If your dog pooed in your house...

Yes, because a pavement is exactly the same as a house 🙄

Pavements are covered in filth and fox shit.

makingmammaries · 20/09/2019 19:22

Wet wipes are much worse for the environment than a little smear of dog poo that will be unnoticeable in a few minutes when it dries.

Cryalot2 · 20/09/2019 19:28

I guess I am the hated sort as am a dog owner.
Mostly we take her to the park or at weekends ,dog friendly beach . She carries bags on her harness and we always have tissues, wipes and water.

Vulpine · 20/09/2019 19:31

Yeah cos dog poo stops being dog poo when it dries That explains why there's so much everywhere.

Krisskrosskiss · 20/09/2019 19:32

Well there was nothing you could do but I can see why she asked if you had a wet wipe coz it is a bit grim... not really your fault though if your dogs poo was runny and you didnt expect it. You did your best to clean it with what you had.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 20/09/2019 19:37

I wouldn’t expect this but it is totally gross and horrid to have it outside your house so I appreciate she was irritated

ThirstyGhost · 20/09/2019 19:38

Cats shit too and no one clears it up. Just saying....

britinnyc · 20/09/2019 19:44

Wet wipes really don't work well on it either. Even sloshing it with water doesn't do much. Sometimes there will be poo residue and for those of us without gardens for the dog to poop in there really isn't any way to avoid it, I try to get my dog into the gutter but sometimes when things aren't quite right it isn't possible and my attempts to be considerate and clean it just end up spreading it around more! Dogs are gross but I still love mine poo stains and all

CheshireDing · 20/09/2019 19:45

This is mad ! I have never known anyone carry wet wipes to wipe any a smear of dog poo, not very environmentally friendly is it 🙄
The rain will wash it away shortly.

Sparkles57 · 20/09/2019 19:47

Feeling smug because my dog will only shit in my garden Grin

Justgorgeous · 20/09/2019 19:51

I have to agree here. The amount of people that leave their dog poo remnants is grim. I hate seeing dogs shatting on the pavement as it’s unlikely all will be removed. It turns my stomach.

LittleMy20 · 20/09/2019 19:52

You shouldn’t leave any dog mess outside someone’s home. It’s nightmare. Think of someone after a different day having to wash it off buggy wheels or shoes etc. You should clean up any residual mess anyhow.

LittleMy20 · 20/09/2019 19:53

Sorry after a difficult day. I speak from experience- it’s very upsetting.

walkintheparc · 20/09/2019 19:59

I take a spray bottle of water with a bit of detergent in just in case my dog does a soft one. I always have a couple of sheets of kitchen paper too just in case it's a liquidy mess (yuk). The pavement where we live is quite pale and smooth so I would feel awful and embarrassed leaving any mess.

walkintheparc · 20/09/2019 20:00

I do get why she asked if she was outside painting the fence! I wouldn't want to spend time doing something near the ground around poo smears.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 20/09/2019 20:03

I take a portable pressure washer and some zooflora to make sure the pavements sparkle after my dog defecates.

Wipes, indeed. Amateurs.

EmeraldShamrock · 20/09/2019 20:05

A neighbour with 2 pug's lays brown paper under them as they squat.
Another neighbour forces this, I kind of agree, kids play on the green. No one wants dog shit smears on the ground.
