To think that expecting someone to wipe the pavement with wet wipes after you dog has done a poo is weird?

Just now DH and I were walking with DD and our small spaniel. We are walking along the pavement and the dog decides he needs a poo just in front of a garden wall of a house. The gate of the house was about two foot down from us and there was a woman painting the gate who watched us.

The dog does his business, quite close to the wall, on a pile of pine needles. I pick up what I can, including a handful of pine needles, and there is a small smear of poo on the pavement which I wipe with the bag as best I can but some gets left behind (the smear was about a thumb length).

We carry on walking and suddenly the woman is running after us saying do we have wet wipes to clean up the smear of poo! We said no and she said well you’ve left quite a mess! I just said sorry I did the best I could as his poo was a bit soft today, and she stormed off saying sarcastically oh I’ll clean it up then.

I’m just a bit baffled. Do people carry wet wipes to wipe the pavement in case their dog does a slightly runny poo? I have lots of friends with dogs and they don’t do it, and have never seen anyone with a dog doing this. Sometimes if the dog does a runny poo and I can’t get it all, I will cover it with leaves/grass if there is any to hand. If I knew my dog had diarrhea for example, then I would probably carry kitchen towel or similar in case he made a mess, but I wouldn’t carry something like wet wipes on every walk.

I’m not sure why she was so upset. The poo was on a public pavement, it wasn’t in front of her gate and it was so close to the wall in the pile of pine needles that there was no chance of anyone stepping in it, and even if they did it was such a tiny smear it probably wouldn’t even transfer to a shoe!

I am a responsible dog owner and always pick up after my dog but AIBU for thinking her request was a bit weird?

So who is supposed to clean up a shit smear then? The amount of dog mess I have to step over and around and in makes my teeth itch. And that's speaking as the owner of two dogs. Dogs I clean up respectfully after. Humans shit in a toilet for a reason. Clean up after your dog.

LolaSmiles · 20/09/2019 22:05

Small dog poo smear after an owner has cleaned up the mess and later she mentions an extended lead...

Settles in with the popcorn for the usual "reasons I hate dogs" spat. 🍿

ALoadOfTwaddle · 21/09/2019 08:31

So who is supposed to clean up a shit smear then?

No one. After it dries it won't transfer anyway and any remnants will gradually be eroded away by the elements. Same as urine.

Worsethingshappen · 21/09/2019 15:40

I Live in a city and never see people using wet wipes to clean up dog poo. But I see and smell plenty of dog poo remnants that are left on the pavement. I think it’s totally disgusting and can’t understand why it’s somehow acceptable to leave shit on the pavement. Folk, and young children should feel free to walk on pavements without picking their steps.
If I ever get a dog I intend to be prepared to deal with the mess it creates. So should you.

Lockheart · 21/09/2019 16:19

Every time you pick up poo there's always going to be a residue. Whether it's on grass or tarmac. Noone I know carries wet wipes, just regular bags. She's very strange. You picked up after your dog as you should do.

EmeraldShamrock · 21/09/2019 16:30

I've said it before, domesticated animals should wear a specialised pooch nappy, with a hole for the tail.
There are far more dog owners these days some pavements are covered in shit, it is disgusting.
I guess the no shoes in the house people have the right idea. 🤢

EmeraldShamrock · 21/09/2019 16:32

What about people spitting big blobs of snot and puking on pavements? If it was the same situation, me in my garden, I'd ask them to clean it, I'd also call them a dirt bag.

LolaSmiles · 21/09/2019 16:35

emerald
I'm a no shoes in house person but not because of the odd smear on the pavement, but because there'll also be leftover vomit, urine from a range of animals, poo deposits from a range of animals, bacteria from rubbish, bacteria picked up on people's feet and animal PWS that gets moved along

The outdoor world isn't a germ free zone so I can't help but anyone on this thread who thinks an owner who cleans up after their dog is causing some sort of hazard that doesn't already exist need a bit of a grip giving to them

BeardedMum · 21/09/2019 16:38

I think it’s grim when dogs ooo on pavements and it should be cleaned up properly.

BeardedMum · 21/09/2019 16:39

Poo not ooo

howyoulikemenow · 21/09/2019 16:43

The water doesn't actually clean it though does it? It's still on the pavement, just spread around by water...

Bookworm4 · 21/09/2019 16:48

Did nobody notice she said a ‘thumb length’ not 3ft pile of shite. Seriously the nastiness towards dogs on here is horrible. At least most dog owners clean up unlike the shit tip families with kids leave behind at parks/beaches such is their entitlement.

MrsCasares · 21/09/2019 16:49

In Cadiz you have to carry a spray bottle with a red lid/nozzle to spray when your dog has urinated.

I think it’s a great idea (am a dog owner).

Careful Wink
You'll really start a bunfight by pointing out how humans can be irresponsible and leave places looking a tip. Someone will come along and claim you're ranking your dog as being more important than children (it's the usual line when anyone points out that everyone has responsibilities).

Bookworm4 · 21/09/2019 17:04

@lola
I have both, dogs & kids, I know what I prefer 😉

Topseyt · 21/09/2019 17:04

So who is supposed to clean up a shit smear then?

There is only so much you can do. It will dry very quickly. I would just have kicked pine needles over it too.

I always have poo bags and often some tissues or kitchen roll with me to clear up after my dogs. I do clear up every time, but no, I don't carry a whole array of stuff with me to disinfect footpaths.

CottonSock · 21/09/2019 17:10

So many smears of dog shit on my street, we need to look out and avoid them. I think it should be cleaned up by owners.

Topseyt · 21/09/2019 17:13

I feed my dog on glitter and zoflora, so his poo magically cleans up any smears all by itself and the footpath is gleaming.

TheFatberg · 21/09/2019 17:14

Pursefirst

Oh FGS its a bit of poo!

Maybe some water would have helped, but a wet-wipe? Really? Instead of letting an insignificant amount of poo biodegrade naturally, some loons would prefer to use a wet-wipe that likely will add to a fatberg somewhere.

You rang?

MyNeighboursAreWeird · 21/09/2019 17:21

I’ve always thought this is quite frankly, fucking bizarre!! I don’t carry wet wipes and I’m definitely not going to start. I carry bags and always pick up too but I wouldn’t wipe the pavement with a wet wipe LOL people are clapped

Drivenmad80 · 21/09/2019 17:22

I know a dog owner who's dog is prone to 'soft leavings' so she carries a bottle of tap water with her so she can rinse any bits left. I always thought that was quite thoughtful!!

MyNeighboursAreWeird · 21/09/2019 17:24

I have just read the comment about carrying a bottle of water to squirt it away HAHAHAHAHAHA ooohhhh my god
