Sapiosexual - AIBU to think this is bisexual by another name?

Apparently the new thing is sapiosexual - to be attracted to intelligence before gender. Surely that is just bisexual - why does it need another name?

That means I'm so fecked off with all the twats that I don't want to sleep with any of them, and in fact would be much happier if they all fecked off immediately and left me here with a book. Pronouns and all.

I (very briefly) had sapiosexual on my dating profile. Not because I see it as "a thing", and I definitely didn't "come out" 😁 but I figured it would be an easy way of weeding out the thickos or people who couldn't be bothered to do a 5 second Google search. It really was insufferably pretentious though so I took it off after a few days, and wrote a brief sentence about being more attracted to intelligence and personality than looks. That landed me my lovely (very intelligent) boyfriend so it was a win in the end!

I feel dreadfully "old" when I say this but these days it seems that plain old preferences and personality traits are all referred to as "sexualities" and "genders", it's ridiculous. Your sexuality is about who you are sexually attracted to, male, female, both or neither. Anything else is a preference!

I think I am actually ‘Ilikeyouasexual’. So do I win?

Judging by the numbers of men who seem to feel that my single female friends' PhDs are a personal insult, I would suggest that this category is 'men'.

I don't think there are 8 billion people in the world yet so we'd have to agree to have one different gender each & save the spares for new people.

It's not just another word for bisexual - you might not be attracted to intelligent women, just to intelligent men, or vice versa, so it's a subset of bisexual or of heterosexual or of gay/lesbian.

Seems quite normal to me to be attracted to people who are a similar intellectual level, so you can talk about stuff as well as be physically attracted. It's labelling every possible permutation which is tedious and limiting - I might usually be more attracted to a particular physical build and style and level of education, but I don't want to say I would never be attracted to someone who doesn't exactly fit my usual pattern.

But on your wider point, I don't think this sapiosexual is all that egregious... I came across demisexual the other day. A certain segment of society is in need of a firm grip!
