To ask an ebay question

Buyer has ‘bought’ an item from me last night and not yet paid
Have sent an invoice and message this morning
Questions:

  1. How long do they get to pay?
  2. What happens with the item if they don’t pay- can you somehow retract it online? Haven’t sent it yet obviously Very annoying as 6 people were watching it!

You would normally specify when you expect payment to be made, without that I'd just give a reasonable amount of time before raising a dispute, probably something like 3 full days after the auction finished or 48 hours after a "buy it now" was clicked.

If they didn't pay, like mentioned above you'd just raise a dispute and ebay will give details of when the dispute is over. I'm not sure how long that would take I'm afraid.

As for not receiving immediate payment, this is very common especially with auctions. I wouldn't even start thinking that they might not pay in the first 24-48 hours as they might not get to a computer until they are, for example, back at work.

Octobersnear · 19/09/2019 10:36

HI, it’s a buy it now
Will be so annoying if they don’t pay as 5 others wanted the item!
If they’ve not paid by Saturday am should I send a message again then if not paid by Sunday night contact eBay Monday am?

They must have had a phone or computer to ‘buy’ it last night!

Just coz 6 people were watching it doesn't mean they would actually buy it. Maybe they have their own to sell and want to see what it goes for or if it sells at all.

I would give it a couple of days then open an unpaid case with ebay.

Beesandcheese · 19/09/2019 10:40

If you relist those watching it will get a notification

ZeroFuchsGiven · 19/09/2019 10:40

Its been less than 24 hours, They may be waiting for funds to clear. I'd give them at least 48 hours before messaging them to ask if they still want it.

MeanLaQueefer · 19/09/2019 10:42

I only send a reminder after two days and usually only open an unpaid item case after a week, if I don’t hear anything back from the buyer.
It’s totally normal for people not to pay for 24-48 hours after clicking on ‘buy it now’.

Octobersnear · 19/09/2019 10:42

Is it a lot of hassle if I have to open an unpaid case with eBay, or is it straightforward and resolved quickly?

OP posts:
Piffle11 · 19/09/2019 10:44

Ebay will notify the buyer, then give them a certain amount of time to respond or pay. It's not a hassle, unless you are desperate to sell. As another poster said, just because people are watching, doesn't mean they will buy. I have something for sale at the moment that's been on for over a month: 4 watchers, they are clearly just wanting to sell something similar and are waiting to see what mine sells for. Not being funny, but the answers to your questions are easily found on eBay site.

MountPheasant · 19/09/2019 10:46

Give them until the same time this evening to pay and then send a message- this time tomorrow, contact eBay if you’ve not heard.

Also watchers doesn’t mean a thing FYI

Minai · 19/09/2019 10:47

I had this a while ago. Buyer hadn’t paid 5 days later so I cancelled the order (after requesting payment a few days previously) the cheeky fucker emailed me to have a go at me for cancelling the order and said she was waiting to get paid to pay me. I said if she’d told me that when she’d bought it I would have understood but given that she hadn’t contacted me I’d cancelled the order and that she’d be welcome to buy it again when she is able to pay. She responded that she wouldn’t buy it off me as I was too impatient. Impatient 😂 fancy that wanting payment for something that you’ve sold. Had other people watching too which was annoying

Octobersnear · 19/09/2019 10:58

Piffle11 - I’m new to eBay and did try to ring them but there’s a long wait this morning

OP posts:
Inebriati · 19/09/2019 11:05

If the item is 'buy it now' but he hasn't paid it should still be available to other people in your listings.

If the item was listed at auction with 'buy now', I think the buyer has 4 days to pay and then you can open a case.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 19/09/2019 11:09

If the item is 'buy it now' but he hasn't paid it should still be available to other people in your listings

That is not true.

Piffle11 · 19/09/2019 12:12

You don't need to ring them - use the site map, or even just Google it.

Piffle11 · 19/09/2019 12:15

This is from the seller centre on eBay:

If the buyer doesn't respond to your message or invoice and still hasn't paid, here's what you should do:

  1. If it's been more than 2 full days since the listing ended, you can select Report an unpaid item. This lets us know you're having a problem and starts the formal process of resolving the issue – we call this opening a case. You need to report a case within 32 days of the listing ending.
  1. After opening a case, the buyer has 4 days to respond or pay for the item. On the 5th day, you can close the case by going to the Resolution Centre- opens in new window or tab and selecting Receive fee credit, then Close case on the following page. Under Have you received payment from the buyer?, select No. The unpaid item is then recorded on the buyer's account, the final value fee will be credited back to you, and you can relist the item.
jimmyhill · 19/09/2019 12:19

Chill out. Sometimes they take a day or two to pay. If they don't, you open a non-payment case (it's pressing a button!) and relist the item. If it sold once it will sell again. Possibly for more money!

Chamina · 19/04/2020 18:51

Hi. What will be the consequence if i got an unpaid case open? I didn’t know that ebay is messaging me. I only read the message today. And I want the item to be cancelled

Suze1621 · 19/04/2020 21:12

I thought Buy it Now meant immediate payment as that has always been my experience of making and receiving payments for Buy it Now items.

tensmum1964 · 19/04/2020 21:45

Ive bought things on buy it now and it always takes you to the payment section so I don't understand how they haven't paid.

73kittycat73 · 19/04/2020 21:47

Zoombie thread!

quietheart · 19/04/2020 21:52

For future reference if you list buy it now there is an option for immediate payment the person cannot buy it unless they pay immediately. Some people buy it now knowing they can’t pay for a few days but want to secure the item.

You don’t need to phone eBay to open a case it’s all done online. Buyer gets a message to pay within a few days, if they pay, you post, if they don’t you can relist the item.

quietheart · 19/04/2020 21:54

Well spotted @73kittycat73
