Scratch on hire van

I hired a van to move some stuff the weekend before last and dropped it back into their secure area after hours as arranged with them. The following day they called me and said the paintwork was scratched and they would need to get a quote from a repair place. I said I wasn’t aware of the scratch but they said it wasn’t there when they rented it to me, which is true as we inspected it together beforehand and I signed some paperwork. They offered to email me photos of the damage but I didn’t hear from them for a few days, and had to chase them up repeatedly before I got the pictures, finally getting them 5 days after I returned the van. They said they were still waiting to get the quote from the repair place. I called them every day to chase this and they finally told me yesterday that the quote was for £270 but they would be willing to claim vat and just keep my £200 deposit. I asked them if I could get another quote as this seems a lot for a 3cm scratch, no dent and I have not heard back from them in 2 days. What do I do? Is there anything I can do? I’m on a low income and this is causing me so much anxiety.

Did they not inspect along with you when you returned it? How can they prove you did it?

Does it say anything in their terms and conditions? I'm not sure where you stand with regards to getting another quote as someone would have to drive it to the repair shop? Not unreasonable to ask tho.

This has bothered me before when I've hired a car... What's to say someone else hasn't damaged it in between you parking it up and them checking it? Do they have cameras in the secure area?

Sounds dodgy.

Thetiss · 18/09/2019 17:53

No they didn’t inspect it with me because it was after hours, I was given a little fob which opened the secure gate

At the moment they’re just avoiding me, not returning calls so I can’t even ask them about cameras etc

Think I would speak to citizens advice. Think they are trying to pull a fast one.

I would cancel the credit card that you booked it on
Ring up and say you have lost it so that you get a completely different credit card number and 3 digit security number
That’ way they shouldn’t be able to take any money of your card

Thanks, they took the £200 deposit at the time I paid for the van upfront so it’s already gone to them Sad

My dad proper scratched our hire car on holiday in two different places and they took under 200 euros off him. Think they're being a bit cheeky tbh.

Thank you, I will speak to CAB.
