This is really shocking. Based on the large survey numbers, and the reputable research, I'd assume that is an accurate picture. 1 in 16!

Very disturbing! That is almost if it different in the UK I wonder? (ignore my username! I'm there a few days a week).

"In a nationally representative sample of more than 13,000 women, 6.5% said their first sexual encounters was forced as opposed to voluntary," said the study's lead author, Dr. Laura Hawks.

Horrifying, unfortunately not surprising

Makes for feeling very awkward (at best) when drunken girly conversations get around to 'when did you first have sex'.

hate to have to say it, but all that access to porn doesn't help.

I’m not surprised by this. Terrible!

How can we protect our daughters?!

Timshelthechoice - I definitely agree with this. Was actually saying the exact same thing the other day to current DP. Relationship with my first boyfriend had many non-consensual instances. Pornography definitely influenced him (I was his first sexual partner so would be where his info was from) and at the time I just didn't know any better that being forced/not consenting and him doing it anyway was as wrong as it was. Not sure he did either. Not that it makes it any better and I am still massively damaged years later on. I find it all very sad and think better education is needed from a young age. Reality is children/young teens etc. are accessing it and with no context and explanation it's so dangerous :(

Rings true for me, my first time was rape (age 13) and I can think of instances in both my long term relationships which were definitely non-consensual. My husband is the only long term partner I've had who hasn't forced or coerced me into sex. Christ that's shocking written down Sad
