To think that surely this is child abuse?

An episode of Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over is airing tonight which features a family with three children aged 8, 4 and a baby and the parents let the kids do whatever they want and it’s so extreme I think it’s verging on abuse.

The kids are ‘home schooled’ but the 8 year old cannot write his own name. The parents say it isn’t a priority and that he will pick it up eventually. The kids all sleep in the same bed as their parents, they have no set time for bed and they can eat whatever they want whenever they want. To be fair the kids do seem to eat a lot of veg so I can’t knock that. The four year old is still in nappies.

They don’t enforce teeth brushing- tooth brushes are available to the kids but if they don’t want to brush their teeth, they won’t make them. They also don’t believe in main stream medicine (including antibiotics and vaccinations).

Surely this is child abuse?! Also aren’t there any checks made if children are home schooled to ensure they are actually been taught properly?

Here is a link to an article about it- www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-7473545/Father-lives-social-housing-insisted-no-intention-finding-time-work.html

I can’t stand Stacey Dooley but I’m going to have to watch this tonight because I really can’t believe this!

I think they’re doing their kids a huge disservice
Whether the parents like it or not you need gcse and A-level qualifications to get a higher education And work for those begins at primary school age
That’s just the way it is. Allowing the kids to ‘learn in their own time’ is going to hinder them an awful lot if one of them wants to be a lawyer a doctor or a dentist or similar
I feel really sorry for the children

Just watched it.
I missed the middle of the show looking at you Dh But from what I saw.
She's living in cloud cookoo land. She'd take her kids all over the world with no vax. Then use local remedies to keep them safe.
Does she think all those people in deepest Africa or south America haven't tried to keep their kids safe with home remedies? She's delusional.
They seem to think the world owes them a living, no work needed.
The boy is learing to read using an app. That is possible. Dd did it with a comuter game and was reading alone before starting school at 5. Only one other child in her class could read.
Even if the children do have potential to become something exciting that they would love to be, with no education and no encouragement it won't happen. They are hindering their children. No wonder her Mum doesn't see eye to eye. Like Stacy said about their parenting style compared to most other people, they aren't on the same page, or in the same book, they aren't even in the same library.

I thinks it's abusive to continually parade your children on TV and in the media knowing they'll be at best the subject of debate and at worst the target of ridicule. It's one way of generating a income I suppose. Hmm

Do the children mix with other kids ? They just seemed to spend a lot of time in the house.

SarahTancredi · 20/09/2019 10:15

I'm watching this now. I haven't read full thread so I'll apologise for any repetition.

It goes without saying the medical side is very worrying.

But I'm finding it alot harder to disagree with everything than I thought I would tbh.

Adele is right. All these children in the education system from toddler hood, ridiculously high expectations if performance , everything recorded and measured etc. It isnt working. It's not really increasing the chances of a good outcome. Kids who start later do do better.theybare ready fir it in a way 4 year olds barely out of nappies and still fall asleep in the day are.

And all these early nights and early starts and set meal times that not so much fir the benefit of the kids but a necessity for the working and educational system we have. Are these off grid families wring or are billions of people just not willing to admit they are a slave to societal norms and breaking free opens then up not only to criticism but the fact for decades they have git it all "wrong"

I couldn't do it. But I don't think anyone can say those kids arent healthy or loved and in many ways calmer and happier than other children. And well behaved. Active.

Its a worry they cant read or write but we cant say that they wont be able to in the future.

The family wont allow their children access to mainstream medicine or vaccinations. Denying children access to medical care is abuse, nevermind whether the rest of their (shitty) parenting is abuse or not.

MyDcAreMarvel I was homeschooled for a time and we had someone come out to see what I was being taught.
It’s wasn’t an inspection though, it was an informal visit that your parent chose to agree too.

Posters asking how they can watch it , it was on channel W.

FurnitureAndBackgammon · 20/09/2019 11:23

They also set up a just giving page so they could buy a remote property and live completely off grid

Wonder how they'll power the kids' iPads that they were glued to?

It's not necessarily a bad thing to allow kids to eat when they are hungry, especially if there eating healthy stuff

The girl had ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

I watched it last night and got very frustrated. The mother was in a dream world with the baby permanently stuck to her. They are not educating their children in any shape or form. I have all respect for home schoolers but these were literally doing nothing with them. The poor boy seemed like he needed to interact with other children and don't get me started on the dog fasting lazy bastards forgot to feed it in other words.

There is another thread on this over in Telly Addicts if anyone wants a look.

The main thing I don't get is the screens... the amount of time they are on them seems at odds with their attitude. I don't disagree with everything but I don't agree with alot of it either. Some of the stuff they say is down right stupid and not as high brown and brilliant as they think.
