No idea how to put this

Long time user. Love Mumsnet for intelligent, considered, witty discussions. Genuinely has introduced me to new concepts and made me think of things in new lights.

In the last month or so, posters seem....well.....different. Can’t think how to put it without sounding condescending or offensive.

Anyone else noticed this? Am I going mad?

Best life, no idea what a vest life is. Something from a Damart catalogue maybe 🙄

Itsarainyday555 · 18/09/2019 17:09

I have only been on this forum a short while and in that time have noticed the change. People unable to write in grammatically correct sentences and, to be frank, people who make you realise why the patriarchy still exists. 'How will I get my shopping from the front door to the kitchen now that Tesco don't deliver in bags', 'I had a baby with a man after knowing him for two months and now he's not very nice to me' etc. I imagine sexist twats sitting in the pub showing these posts to each other to affirm their belief that women are stupid and need to be ruled over by men. It makes me despair.

TheMustressMhor · 18/09/2019 17:11

@SistersOfMerci

I would love to live a Vest Life. It sounds brilliant.

I might use that as my next name-change. Look out for LivingTheVestLife everyone.

TheMustressMhor · 18/09/2019 17:14

@Itsarainyday555

There was an MLM thread a couple of days ago which illustrated your point perfectly.

A Hunbot appeared from nowhere and said things like "u wd be happy to live ur life without this coffee babe" and it made me cringe.

Tilltheendoftheline · 18/09/2019 17:21

I have been here 10 years and these threads always go the same.

People saying it's not as intelligent, more trolls etc

I cant help wonder is this mythical past mn only exists in some peoples minds.

Treestreestrees · 18/09/2019 17:22

What @Andysbestadventure said 😂

OP posts:
picklemepopcorn · 18/09/2019 17:22

I think it's ok to cringe when people say hunni, babes, and #livingmybestlife. I know they cringe when I exclaim 'jolly good' over my Waitrose naice ham.

PortiaCastis · 18/09/2019 17:29

I cringe at nasty snobbery, but as my Gran always said "if you're looking down on someone you can be damn sure there are twice as many people looking down on you"
Wise words

Treestreestrees · 18/09/2019 17:29

Just cast an eye over some of the AIBU threads on the first page and literally felt my toes curl. I’m beginning to despair.

OP posts:
shearwater · 18/09/2019 17:30

Been on here off and on since 2011 and have never found it any different.

user1573354 · 18/09/2019 17:33

You are not wrong. I've noticed it mostly in the last month. The absolute worst is a sharp increase in posters using old style text type.

haverhill · 18/09/2019 17:41

I’ve noticed more and more American expressions like ‘He was pissed at me’ and ‘Tricky situation- how do I deal?’ etc.
I don’t know why exactly but it irritates me.

TheMustressMhor · 18/09/2019 17:42

There are also a lot of posters using *** for swear words now, too.

SecretWitch · 18/09/2019 17:49

Oh, yes, never a complete thread without a bit of anti-Americanism, eh?

haverhill · 18/09/2019 17:59

I’m not anti-American. I nearly married one.
Do you find the snobbery in the thread equally terrible?

picklemepopcorn · 18/09/2019 18:01

I don't think disliking americanisms is anti American. I dislike my British children using American pronunciations and spellings, that's all.

lazylinguist · 18/09/2019 18:07

Seems like people have different complaints about 'MN these days' then. Variously... there are too many stupid people, too many common people, too many bullies and too many people who don't use MC British English with correct enough grammar and spelling. Anything else I've missed out? Complaining about the bullies is fair comment. The rest is just snobbery tbh.

WhyBirdStop · 18/09/2019 18:10

I take it you didn't see the huns thread...

Aderyn19 · 18/09/2019 18:15

It's not as funny as it used to be and a lot of posters seem to have lost the ability to read - either that or they are deliberately obtuse.

AutumnCrow · 18/09/2019 18:22

Yeah a lot of netmums crew come I think. It's fine, they just need assimilation. Poke at them with a stick until they swear at you Grin @gamerchick

I'm living my vest life too, @SistersOfMerci

Sn0tnose · 18/09/2019 18:25

There was a 'wanna' in a thread title yesterday.

Did it redeem itself with a zigazig ah?

That there is the reason I come to Mumsnet

Me too.

TheMustressMhor · 18/09/2019 18:27

Well, this thread has encouraged me to live my vest life with a vengeance, hun. xxxx

WonderWomansSpin · 18/09/2019 18:33

It has changed. I can't decide if half the posts are genuine (they seem very surrendered wives) or if we've been inundated with MRAs again.

It could be a concentrated effort by MRAs to change the demographic and shift public perception so MN isn't viewed as so influential. If it is, then they'll be disappointed. As a PP said, you can still find boards and threads that are like the old MN - clever, frank, funny, handmaid-free.They're just unlikely to be in Trending or AIBU.

Paintedmaypole · 18/09/2019 18:42

MN could not have become more "black and white" than it used to be. It has always been very judgmental and black and white. It may be a good thing to have more variety rather than an echo chamber where everyone toes the line. I have found MN to be entertaining but it is a very prejudiced place on the whole.

zafferana · 18/09/2019 18:42

There have been A LOT of threads recently where I fear for the future of this country if it's citizens are so feeble that they can't make the simplest of decisions for themselves. Some people seem to have lost the ability to function as humans, make choices, live with their choices, be adults and suck it up.
