Random 'I understand You've Been Involved In A Car Accident' Phone Calls

I have started getting these calls again and apart from blocking the numbers I'm not sure how to stop them. I now start off by saying 'give me the details then' and have got as far as being told it was in a Red Vauxhall Cavalier. 1) I haven't got a current licence and 2) I haven't had a car for at least 15 years - where do they get my number from? I'd love to know if anybody is or knows one of these callers and because they end up hanging up on me how do they make a living?

What do they want though? Is it a “genuine” compensation company trying to fish for clients or some kind of scam? For all the calls you get I have never met anyone who knows what they actually want

JudefromJersey · 18/09/2019 16:21

@Blatherskite ooooh. Now I really want them to call me because I’m SOOOO using that one.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 18/09/2019 16:31

They usually hang up if you say "well I wouldn't really call it an accident! He wound me up so much that I ran him over on purpose"

rabbitwoman · 18/09/2019 16:31

I usually say something like "oh, it was completely my fault. I was so drunk!! I killed a man!" Or something like that......

Dairymilkmuncher · 18/09/2019 16:39

I can't stand them i always think it's a job getting back to me or I've not checked the online lottery and they're calling to tell me I've got millions sitting unclaimed.

I do know someone that got called after an accident and thought it was a legit company and not just chancers but anyways she got a couple grand compensation because it wasn't her fault and wouldn't have gone looking for it but since they called....

youarenotkiddingme · 18/09/2019 16:51

I play along.

I usually have been involved in such severe accidents I've become

Completely hearing impaired
Been left unable to talk
Have lost my head at one point.

I like seeing how it takes them to realise that I'm actually listening to them and replying and quite clearly have my head attached Blush

TPS

BarbarAnna · 18/09/2019 17:06

@MrMeSeeks TPS doesn’t always work. See www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/stillgetcalls.html

I'd recommend a TruCall device. It's like an answerphone, but blocks anonymous and automated calls. It asks the caller to press a number, and if they don't/can't they don't get through.

Coulddowithanap · 19/09/2019 17:14

DD used to get these calls. She didn't always take her phone to school so I answered it one day and had a go at them for phoning a 10 year olds phone. They never did phone back.

When I get the calls I like to play along, especially if I hadn't had adult company for a few days and I'm bored. Managed to get a few to hang up on me!

danmthatonestakentryanotheer · 19/09/2019 17:53

OH had a Microsoft one once...he asked them to state what the problem was..as the caller went into some jargon about an error OH piped up "well that wouldn't happen with that error because..." and then went into full IT systems support mode. He then finished it of with "anything I've missed? Do you have any questions?" They hung up and never rang again.

Watsername · 19/09/2019 18:01

These annoy me intensely. I have never even sat in a driver's seat, let alone driven, yet I get calls like this:

Them: "I have a file in front of me from the accident you had when you were driving and not at fault."

Me: "No you don't, you are a LIAR!!!!"

EndoftheWorlds · 19/09/2019 18:16

I had one today. kept him on the phone for 20 minutes whilst I told him all about my accident and my injuries. We did a good 5 minutes on the giraffe that had caused it before he put the phone down. He knew the A59 well (or so he said) and understood that it was a dangerous road for livestock.

MrMeSeeks · 19/09/2019 18:17

BarbarAnna
My friend, my dp and i all are signed up wth them after getting calls nearly everyday ( my friend including txts) now i can count on one hand how many ive had this year.
I merely mention tps and they hang up Grin

Alloftheboys · 19/09/2019 18:27

When I get a call from the automatic dialling machine thing that sounds like a real person I just bash all the buttons till they hang up.

Buzzieone · 19/09/2019 18:37

I Used to get so annoyed at these callers .
Now I just play along .
Sometimes screaming omg who’s had an accident noooooooooooo.

Or the ‘ accident’ in a bumper car at the fun fair . You can really string them along with that one - the other car was going the wrong way .... i think it happens all the time ......
it was only a little bump we laughed afterwards....
it’s ok because my best friend was in another car so crashed into the car that bumped me . Etc etc they hang up when they realise ....

ListeningQuietly · 20/09/2019 13:54

I just got shouted at by one of them for upsetting one of their staff
