We usually don't have any but on Saturday I had the window open all day as it was lovely and warm and I noticed Quite a few of them on the inside of the window maybe 10-15 which was a little unusual as we generally have maybe one or two.
Didn't think much of it got rid of them and put it down to having the window open.

I was out from morning until about 6pm last night and came back to at least a hundred on the same window on the inside !!! Envy

Have you got a pic?

Are they 'biscuit flies'?

TeeniefaeTroon · 16/09/2019 13:43

Sounds like something has died. We had similar when a bird fell down the chimney and it was behind the gas fire.

Daffodil2018 · 16/09/2019 13:43

If they're big flies then you've got maggots somewhere. Dead mouse or bird? Can you smell anything?

NoDontLookAtMeImShy · 16/09/2019 13:43

sorry biscuit beetles they fly though. Ducking nightmare get rid of.

LoudBatPerson · 16/09/2019 13:44

I would guess you have a dead rodent or bird somewhere. Maybe the chimney, or in the wall if you have any damaged air blocks.

bluebeck · 16/09/2019 13:45

Yeah there will be a deceased beastie somewhere - can you not smell it yet Grin ???

Hiredandsqueak · 16/09/2019 13:47

I think you probably have cluster flies

thekingfisher · 16/09/2019 13:51

yes cluster flies - it can happen we get them - they could be in the window frames gaps between frame and window itself or in loft ( thats where ours are) they will go .... if they are in oft you can buy smoke bombs but i wouldn't want to do oe of those in the main house. see if you can identify where there are coming from.

letsjog · 16/09/2019 13:51

Fuck just felt a bit sick reading up about the cluster flies Envy

Here's a pic of aforementioned intruders.

There's only about 2-3 knocking about at the moment.

Could they be coming from the chimney where the fireplace is?
There doesn't seem to be any gaps but then again I might be wrong as its a bit dark there.
We have had a bird fall in before not that we could do anything for the poor thing without knocking through the walls

There's no smells @bluebeck

Maybe it is the fireplace chimney... It's in the lounge and that's where they all seem to be...

That happened in my house too and it was a dead bird behind a blocked up chimney. Fortunately (well...) there was a vent in the skirting board so my husband could get the bird out 🤢🤢🤢 It was the most disgusting thing that's ever happened ever

Mustbetimeforachange · 16/09/2019 13:58

Cluster flies - we get them at this time of year. I can't quite see from your photo though. Do they look like regular blue bottle type flies? If so, maybe you have a dead bird in your chimney.

ImNotYourGranny · 16/09/2019 13:58

We get this every now and again. It means there's something dead nearby. In our case it's the feckin cat who likes to hide his trophies.

letsjog · 16/09/2019 14:00

What can I do??????

OP posts:
letsjog · 16/09/2019 14:01

They look like regular flies. No green blue sheen on them. My windows are completely filthy now - off to clean them and burn the cloth after.

Tumbleweed101 · 16/09/2019 14:01

I’ve had a sudden influx of smallish dark flies which I think are cluster flies. If I remember rightly they are more attracted to fruit etc and hibernate in window frames, lofts and places like that.

Dongdingdong · 16/09/2019 14:01

Could you call pest control OP?

Nat6999 · 16/09/2019 14:08

The flies come through your plug holes & overflows in sinks & your kitchen bin. Pour soda Crystal's & vinegar down your sinks & wash your bins out with bleach every time you empty them, empty them more often. Every night before going to bed put a big squirt of thick bleach down every plug hole & leave the plug in overnight.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 16/09/2019 14:13

how are your elderly neighbours? No one MIA??

I have had a few flies in the kitchen but that's cos everybugger leaves both doors open for the dog and they never put down the door curtain....it's that time of year and the flies like to come in to the warmth!

I have a fly swatter, and am dammned good with it, but your situation is giving me the creeps ! :v

ALadyofLetters · 16/09/2019 14:13

We had that when there was a dead bird stuck half way down the chimney. It didn’t smell as it was too far up but the flies were awful. We got a chimney sweep out but he couldn’t reach it so we had to put a bin bag over the fireplace and tape it up.

Hiredandsqueak · 16/09/2019 14:19

Cluster flies tend to gather where the sun hits the house tbh so it might not mean that is where they are coming from more that is where they are gathering.

bluebeck · 16/09/2019 14:25

how are your elderly neighbours? No one MIA?? Grin Grin

If there is a chimney nearby it's probably a bird so sealing off the chimney should help.

If it's not a bird it's probably just a rat Smile

letsjog · 16/09/2019 14:25

How can I locate where they are coming from?
They just seem to appear!

Animum2 · 16/09/2019 14:30

Get some sticky fly paper from Amazon or your local poundshop, hang it from the ceiling/window/light and they will get caught on it

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 16/09/2019 14:31

you'll have to keep all the doors shut and just listen at the door for them knocking to be let out!
