To delete friend who has joined an MLM

A lady I know from work has joined an MLM selling some sort of laxative coffee.
Her FB and instagram are covered in posts for it and about her promotions/trying to get a car etc etc.
She very much fits the profile of people they poach, she’s a SAHM and it’s been a squeeze of late for her.

I think MLMs are poisonous and I hate seeing her posts flogging this nonsense.
AIBU to remove her from my friend list

Anyway I must go now as I have a 5 year old to give love and attention to

I think it's really interesting that in one breath those preaching the virtues of "supporting other women" are also the ones making snarky comments that very blatantly imply women with different jobs to them are somehow less good mothers / don't care as much about their children.

Personally I think that's much nastier than muting a friend who posts stuff you don't really want to see.

Haffiana · 17/09/2019 18:36

So if a famous person, whom u admire, bring out a drink of orange, u wouldn't try it?

You admitting you would actually drink the Kool-Aid, hun?

And any of the others here, you need to stop, and ideally apologise to any friends and family you have bombarded with sales pitches, apologised to the ones who felt sorry enough to buy anything and go and warn any other person who is potentially thinking of joining an MLM to step away before they rip someone off and get ripped off themselves.
This thread is plenty enough to have educated anyone who didn’t know how bad an MLM is

For those saying no-one makes money or gets trips etc, I only know 2 people (as I mentioned earlier) who do okay - I have known others over the years who have dropped off and lost money.

The person I know who does Scentsy has actually been in those trips abroad. However, that seems to be more down to the fact that she got in early (when it was not that known here) and recruited a person who then recruited masses and sells, so most of her earnings are from the downline. It has to be when you sell a wax bar for £7.50ish as there are only so many burners you will sell.

The person I know who does Body Shop at Home does really well, but then her circle of friends keep ordering without being pushed (most people are pushing but my friend actually isn't). She does like to run competitions (which aren't really allowed) and she only signed up as a bit of a hobby, so is not trying to cover a wage from it which I think gives a different approach. She does earn decent money from it (a pocket money from a hobby not decent for an actual job), but she does like to shop so has actually spent most of her earnings buying new products for herself to use!

WellButterMyArse · 17/09/2019 18:38

I did think the famous person and orange drink comment was quite interesting. Clearly no idea that for large swathes of the population, the answer for one reason or another would be 'of fucking course not'.

@loz85

Honestly people should educate themselves before making stupid statements

Indeed they should. Indeed they should.

The irony is strong..

riceuten · 17/09/2019 18:49

MLM if you actually understood the marketing strategy allows ordinary people to make extraordinary amounts of money when their network actually has an open mind and are not typical sheep who think the only way to sell is via a shop (a company) in the top FTSE 100

Let me guess...another MLMer?

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 17/09/2019 18:58

Bit disappointed I’ve never met or have a real life hunbot on FB now, they sound amusing.

Either that or my friends just don’t hate me enough to sell me laxative coffee.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/09/2019 18:58

Reply me I’m with a question not an insult...!

Is this some sort of code? Hmm

OtraCosaMariposa · 17/09/2019 19:00

I also think those "overseas trips" are a big fat con. You need to make lots of sales to qualify for them, so people desperate to go end up buying up loads of stock to secure their place. Or they pay the hotel accommodation only and you fund your flights, your food, your drinks, the tickets to the training and motivation sessions while you're there... massive big con.

Ticklemeelmo · 17/09/2019 19:00

Total crap. This article clarifies the true picture:

In every case, an average of 99.71% of participants lose money in an MLM. On average, one in 545 is likely to have profited after subtracting expenses and 997 out of 1,000 individuals involved with an MLM lose money (not including time invested)

@Lucie83

You don't have a degree, never mind 2 Hmm

Exhibit A - Ranty paragraph with not a even the slight hint of a comma, fully stop or any sense.

MLM if you actually understood the marketing strategy allows ordinary people to make extraordinary amounts of money when their network actually has an open mind and are not typical sheep who think the only way to sell is via a shop (a company) in the top FTSE 100...

Exhibit B - Well, what does this even mean?

Reply me I’m with a question not an insult...!

ReanimatedSGB · 17/09/2019 19:08

I think some of the people who get sucked in remember having friends or acquaintances who did 'party plan' years ago. The Ann Summers stuff, back in the 80s, could provide a reasonable income because of the way the business model worked then (while there were sex shops, they were pretty much all dingy and a bit scary: if you wanted 'naughty' underwear and vibrators, finding a friend of a friend who did Ann Summers parties was about the only way you would get them.) But that's not going to work as well now, because everyone knows about the likes of LoveHoney and Sh.

I am quietly running my own small business. I've found a very cheap source of a niche product. I also have access to a ready supply of customers. I sell the product for twice what I paid for it. The customer is happy because the product is still cheaper than they could get it elsewhere and I'm happy because I'm making money.

ALittleBitAlexis · 17/09/2019 19:15

No, MLMs rely on 'ordinary people' guilting their 'network' into buying from the limited product range that they have (which they then buy from a massive company) instead of something they actually want from either a large shop or a small independent.

MLMs are huge businesses, it's mass produced stuff, buying it doesn't require an open mind.

Oysterbabe · 17/09/2019 19:16

Funny how working dads are never called selfish isn't it?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/09/2019 19:17

I have 2 degree’s

Are you selling apostrophes, Lucie?

Is that one a free sample?

Weezol · 17/09/2019 19:19

@femfemlicious You can contact Adult Socisl Services in your Mum's area about financial abuse

Benes · 17/09/2019 19:20

onegiftedgal come again??? Working mothers are selfish??
Of course, providing a home, food, clothes etc is incredibly selfish. I must have a word with myself.

And what about my husband? Is he selfish too?

WellButterMyArse · 17/09/2019 19:28

Why the posts making out like this is some kind of objection to home based work? It's not! Plenty of people earn a reasonable living wfh. Because they have proper jobs, or legitimate self-employment.

Solihooley · 17/09/2019 19:29

Can we just call them what they are. They are pyramid schemes. This is a good watch too.

Degree degrees degree’s as you can see it’s not an English degree however both obtained within Great Britain.

Lucie83 · 17/09/2019 19:51

Not at all, I actually had to go as I work full time, I have to keep to a strict schedule.

timeaftertime79 · 17/09/2019 19:51

Wow, some of you can be so patronising and awful. You can sense the upturned noses in the text you write. Unfollow her and stop judging! I know quite a few people who have used MLM but I myself have always looked at it as a scam of sorts. That doesn’t mean my intellect is better, there are people out there so desperate to earn money they will try anything. A disabled lady down my road sells Avon and gets her daughter to deliver the brochures, what’s the harm in that?

Sometimes people need to see that getting on your high horse is not going to help, instead of writing sneery comments, provide facts and education. If they don’t listen back off, I might think your job is pathetic... but I wouldn’t tell you that!
