Lighthearted.
First day of c25k this morning.Im sweating, face like a beetroot and shes all motivating with her lovely voice going "are you ready for your next run?" "Only 2 runs to go" Hmm meanwhile I'm sweating like a pig thinking you fucking do it if it's that easy!! They are only 60min jogs with walking inbetween but its soo hard! Blush

And who knows I could turn into this type of runner...

milliefiori · 16/09/2019 12:01

Can I suggest something? If you are red as beetroot and hating Sarah on Day 1, then take much smaller steps and run more slowly. Sounds like you are sprinting and taking bigger strides than you need. Even very overweight people (like me) can manage Day 1 if you shorten your stride.

percheron67 · 16/09/2019 12:07

If I had to put up with the voice of Sarah Millican I would be more likely to hibernate instead of run!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 16/09/2019 12:19

i started with Sarah, but it kept telling me she wasn't available and I moved over to Jo Wiley...I found that she seemed to believe in me more.

Michael whosit just seemed to be phoning it in.... yes, of course I am an international sprinter but just look at you and your fatarse, sweating in the shed on the treadmill...run for 2 minutes, if you think you could manage that.

I have to get back to it, I am mainly pottering at it to lose a bit of midriff and it does work, but I have been slacking off of late due to visitors and dh cramming shite in the shed that I have to heave ho round to get set up.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 16/09/2019 12:26

MSmighty it’s a million times better outside rather than treadmill, it really is. Why not give that a try? The best thing is no fiddling with buttons when you need to slow down or speed up.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 16/09/2019 12:28

I did the Sarah Millican one and kept picturing her eating a biscuit with a cuppa whilst saying "keep going, pet." Wish I could use it again but it doesn't like working when I use Spotify at the same time. It forgets to tell me to stop 😂

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 16/09/2019 12:36

I am scared to run on the roads...I have shitey ankles and was hobbling about for more than six months after making a start on C25K a couple of years back!

The plan is eventually maybe to run outdoors, but not until I have whittled my waistline and excess flab away! In the mean time, it's the shed for me, and as it's not outside or real running I have minimal excuses. Visitors and DIY notwithstanding :o

MissDew · 16/09/2019 12:37

I would struggle to take Sarah Millican seriously. Right now I've got her in my head saying, 'you'd have a bit of that wouldn't you ?' Like she did for the Tesco voiceover for lovely fruit. She's got such a lusty tone to her voice when she says it.

Her voice would just remind me of her stand up routine even though she was narrating the C25K instructions.

An athlete's voice would give me performance anxiety too !

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/09/2019 13:44

@milliefiori thanks I will

I'd be a bit sceptical of her coaching me through C25K as she is part of the, 'fat and proud' brigade

The point of C25K is to show that anyone can learn to run no matter what their size or fitness level. It's in no way intended to be a weight loss programme and it's not promoted as such. You can be fat and proud and still love running. I'm a size 16-18 and there are women way bigger than me who run the 5K Park Run at my local park every Saturday.

silverystream · 16/09/2019 14:30

Equally running can be part of a whole weight loss routine. Running does burn fat and build muscle. I've lost nearly 3 stone since I started running last year. I have been paying attention to what I eat as well, though.

BertieDrapper · 16/09/2019 14:54

I completed 5k last week... took me 11 weeks I think.... I had to stop using the app around week 7 as I found the repetitive "advice" really annoying when I was trying to listen to music or a podcast!

MissDew · 16/09/2019 14:54

Well done to all for all your efforts.

I am significantly overweight. I need to re-start my C25K to assist my calorie burning ambitions.

My running leggings are size 22. No one should feel discouraged from exercising if they want to do it. No matter their size, shape or capability.

dollydaydream114 · 16/09/2019 15:28

@silverystream - Oh yes, of course! I'm not saying it can't be - I'm using it that way myself. I can't honestly say I'd have lost weight with just the running, but in conjunction with watching what I eat and an hour a week of gym stuff as well, I've lost around a stone and a half and gone down a dress size.

My point to the PP was just that it's not the focus of the NHS app at all, so it doesn't seem contradictory to have someone 'fat and proud' doing a voiceover for it. Grin

I have to be honest - I never, ever thought I would say this but even if I hadn't lost weight, I'd still be absolutely loving the running. I feel so much better since I started doing it, physically and mentally.

silverystream · 16/09/2019 15:52

dolly, well I agree there are loads of other benefits apart from weight loss. Since having chemo intravenously you could actually see how tight my veins were in the arm it was put in. That tightness has gone now. There are very definitely cardio vascular benefits! I also suffered from stiffness and sciatica. That is much improved also. I couldn't do a plank before running. Can hold one for a minute now so my abs are definitely stronger. I actually just feel genuinely stronger. Smile

And of course overweight people run and should run! They should be getting the benefits of exercise too!

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 16/09/2019 15:58

Can I ask the slow runners, do you wear thin soles? I wear the softer wider sole shoe, because my balance is shit, but I was wondering would they still work for slow running.

milliefiori · 16/09/2019 16:05

@MrGsFancyNewVagina I wear wide soled shoes with a lot of padding as I have a very poor gait and would get shin splints if I didn't so no, not thin soles at all, but very slow running.

silverystream · 16/09/2019 16:13

I wear cushioned shoes however they are zero drop and suitable for neutral runners. This feature is aimed at promoting good form (forefoot/ midfoot strike).Another feature of them is a roomy toe box so your toes have room to flex and act as a natural shock absorber. Here:

www.altrarunning.eu/uk/paradigm-4-5-957.html

I have run barefoot indoors on carpet before and used to regularly. It does promote good form. However I did manage to injure my foot once, by twisting it I think, so switched to shoes. The cushioning is good for running on concrete which I do .

silverystream · 16/09/2019 16:17

But I run faster now! (Less than 10 min miles) I just don't push myself too hard speed wise!Grin with slow running the effort is less but you do increase your speed naturally and gradually as your muscles strengthen and stride gets more powerful and longer.

Venger · 16/09/2019 16:47

I'd be a bit sceptical of her coaching me through C25K as she is part of the, 'fat and proud' brigade

What an awful thing to say. In her book she talks about how body image is a fluid thing, sometimes she feels okay about herself and other days she doesn't. She talks about how much she dreads photo shoots and all of the factors that contribute to her not seeing herself in a positive light. She points out that it's unfair women are judged on their physical appearance when it is far more important to be a nice person (much like you are judging her physical appearance with your dig about being "fat and proud"). The overall message isn't about being "fat and proud", the message is that it doesn't matter because you are the only reliable measure of your own self-worth, that you are the same person no matter what you weigh and that it's far more valuable to be a good person.

She's hardly advocating living solely off cake and biscuits.

ChristmasInJuly · 16/09/2019 16:54

Not read the full thread but Sarah Millican has got me to week 9! I’ve got 2 runs to go this week, then I’ve completed it, and I never thought I would. She told me she’d miss me at the start of yesterday’s run, and I have to say, I will miss her cheering me on! Grin

nettie434 · 16/09/2019 17:09

60 second jogs not 60 min!!

Another person hugely relieved to see your second post PrincessHoneysuckle. I would have a lot more problems than beetroot face if I'd been jogging for an hour.

Jimmers · 16/09/2019 17:22

So interested reading all your stories and seeing people having the same misgivings as me about starting public exercise. I’m trying to embrace not giving a shiny shit what people think of me 😁

Can I ask - can you avoid shin splints if you start steady & slow with a shorter stride?

silverystream · 16/09/2019 17:40

Can I ask - can you avoid shin splints if you start steady & slow with a shorter stride?

Maybe. I've not experienced them and that is how I started.Smile

Remember to avoid landing on your heels too.
