To think everyone should accustom themselves to cold water

It has been quite fashionable in certain circles to take ice baths / cold water baths or showers. Stuff about health benefits and autophagy and reducing inflammation etc.

But beyond this I think it is a really good idea because most drownings occur due to cold water shock. Yet people can get accustomed to sitting baths full of ice cubes! I just watched a thing about Alaska wherby someone fell in icy water and was pulled out pretty quickly. They said if they didn't act quick he would lose his fingers! Yet Wim Hof dove under the ice and swam underwater and I think holds a world record for this. Isn't it a good idea to start taking cold water baths in order to build up resilience?

I think so and take a cold water bath everyday. Cold tap water doesn't even feel that cold after a while.

What do you think?

Wah its

CherryPlum · 15/09/2019 21:14

OP I think the cold water is affecting your mind!

PurbeckStone · 15/09/2019 21:14

Reduces inflammation, increases autophagy, increases brown fat.

Yes, this. No idea why everyone is being so negative, there are lots of health benefits and Wim Hof is pretty impressive, too. Sadly, I'm a wimp who lacks discipline and loves hot showers, so very little progress here, but I do love open water swimming and really must try harder!

lljkk · 15/09/2019 21:15

(I have mild Reynauds too & my hands are aching just thinking about it)

Just in case I trip near the sewing machine, I am building up my eyeballs to withstand little pins stuck in them. Ok to be honest, I've only practised on my face so far, but the results look great, don't you think?

@silverystream Nah yer allright......

WTAF? Confused

It is pretty well known to improve circulation and the lymphatic system and reportedly is good for helping with depression. So maybe, yes, it is. Smile

This thread is restoring my faith in humankind Grin

OP I think you’re into something.

I am currently in training in case someone forces copious amounts of Chinese and Chardonnay down my throat.

It’s going well. My tolerance is near-Olympian these days.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 15/09/2019 21:23

I like a cold shower, but I don't imagine it'll help if I fall into Arctic waters. That would be a shock. Mostly, wtf am I doing in the Arctic anyway?!

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 15/09/2019 21:23

The fact that so many people thought a poster fell into icy water in dorothy perkins and the OP didn't even blink at @Posey67 amazing pun makes me want to throw myself into an icy lake.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 15/09/2019 21:31

So, if your cold baths aren't deep enough to constitute a waste of water, are you essentially sitting in a cold puddle?

ALoadOfTwaddle · 15/09/2019 21:32

MrBurgess make sure you've practiced in the bath first.

silverystream · 15/09/2019 21:35

No idea why everyone is being so negative, there are lots of health benefits and Wim Hof is pretty impressive, too.

Thank you, Purbeck, I think so too.Smile

Deep enough for my shoulders to get wet when lying down so more than a puddle. Try it. Lie in the bath with it empty and out the cold tap on and let it fill up.

I’ve also been practising holding my breath just in case I end up leading the first crewed mission to Mars and someone forgets to pack the oxygen. Those extra seconds of exploration time will be well worth it, mark my words!

TheHobbitMum · 15/09/2019 21:41

I have Reynauds so I think I'll take my chances and keep away from ice water deep enough to drown in

lljkk · 15/09/2019 21:48

It's called facial scarring, hiphopchick. Traditional in lots of Africa.
it can look beautiful, too.

They don't swim with baby crocodiles in them there parts. Just to build up tolerance to the bites of the big crocs. Might work... but probably not.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 15/09/2019 21:48

Brr. No thank you. I know how much hot water it takes to cover my shoulders lying down and figure it's the same amount of cold. And a waste of water to be doing it daily.

silverystream · 15/09/2019 21:52

Doesn't take much to wet my shoulders in the bath especially if I slosh them around a bit. You could have a cold shower instead if you were concerned.

Study of 89 Canadian fishermen who died in water found The underlying causes of drownings were reclassified as: cold shock (5.4%), swimming failure (5.4%), hypothermia (5.4%), post-rescue collapse (0.8%), cardiac event (0.8%) and drowning/other (10%). In the remaining 72.2% of deaths, there was insufficient information to determine an underlying cause

CWShk < 25% of known causes.

MindyStClaire · 15/09/2019 22:03

Was frustrated at people believing the Dorothy Perkins story. Told DH. His face lit up before I got to the bit about it being a joke. He really thought he was going to get an amazing ice water while shopping story.

I respect him a little less now...

Blamangeme · 15/09/2019 22:04

I might chuck a bucket of icy water at my dph to prepare him. He's already been a bit of an ice hole today thoughGrin

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 15/09/2019 22:05

@IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod I’d suggest combining the alcohol experiment with the falling from heights training. I’ve heard it hurts much less, so there might be something in that.

The snake venom thing appears to have legs (or you know, no legs), so maybe we should all start doing that?

Spongeface · 15/09/2019 22:07

Agree op- I love swimming in the sea when I get the chance. When I did it regularly it was less of a shock (tiny little knives) and I was able to build up and build up... Not sure how handy it will be but it's very satisfying

CheeseToastMarmite · 15/09/2019 22:08

I thought this was going to be a brexit thread about a potential lack of hot water Grin
