To think everyone should accustom themselves to cold water

It has been quite fashionable in certain circles to take ice baths / cold water baths or showers. Stuff about health benefits and autophagy and reducing inflammation etc.

But beyond this I think it is a really good idea because most drownings occur due to cold water shock. Yet people can get accustomed to sitting baths full of ice cubes! I just watched a thing about Alaska wherby someone fell in icy water and was pulled out pretty quickly. They said if they didn't act quick he would lose his fingers! Yet Wim Hof dove under the ice and swam underwater and I think holds a world record for this. Isn't it a good idea to start taking cold water baths in order to build up resilience?

I think so and take a cold water bath everyday. Cold tap water doesn't even feel that cold after a while.

What do you think?

You crack on, pet. Whatever floats your boat. But if you try to insist that other people do the same then what you should accustom yourself to is being mercilessly mocked.

silverystream · 15/09/2019 19:26

That’s because your extremities go numb.

No they don't. Not numb. Try it.

I do it.

After a shower or a bath, massage some Clarins oil and then finish with a quick cold shower.
Or to rinse to out hair conditioner.

Love it.

silverystream · 15/09/2019 19:30

Love it too Chardonnays.

That seems to make two of us...

Pennyjane89 · 15/09/2019 19:31

I regularly jump off objects, starting with pavements & low walls, moving on to more ambitious items like garage roofs & trees. Soon, I will be able to withstand a fall from a plane
I’m laughing so much Grin

StumpyinSomerset · 15/09/2019 19:32

You go ahead with it,I'll stick to warm water, thanks.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 15/09/2019 19:36

Soubriquet · 15/09/2019 19:51

Can’t believe people believed the Dorothy Perkins comment!

My cousin died from shock of cold water when he was 18, i find you post very distasteful.

Vilanelle · 15/09/2019 19:58

Some of the replies on here are really arsy. Noone here fallen into a river in winter or the sea? Take it from me, its icy cold

messolini9 · 15/09/2019 19:58

I've spent the last 15 years building up an immunity to iocain powder

Grin Grin Grin

Nice one @JesusInTheCabbageVan xx

I'm very sorry to hear that bruffin.

But seriously, if you even merely suspected people could acclimatise themselves to cold water, isn't it worth investigating? Might prevent further tragedies.

I regularly throw myself out of a window to build up tolerance. I started out wrapping a duvet around myself and have got down to just wearing thick jumpers. Soon I hope to get down to a T-shirt.

Very sensible practice OP

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 15/09/2019 20:05

I'm working on building my alcohol tolerance in case of accidental poisoning
Once I've cracked that ill try the cold water and falling from great heights, graded tolerance of course

Mooey89 · 15/09/2019 20:07

I swim in the sea 4ish times per week...
But I do it because I love it, not incase I accidentally fall into an icy lake

AdelaideK · 15/09/2019 20:08

People believing the Dorothy Perkins comment have made me laugh. Funny thread thanks op.

RitaMills · 15/09/2019 20:09

I HATE being cold so This doesn’t appeal to me in the slightest, yes I know I’d probably be one of the ones who died if I fell into icy cold water but I’d much prefer to minimise the chances of that happening rather than take regular ice baths... seriously walking over broken glass is more appealing!

corythatwas · 15/09/2019 20:09

I have actually swum from an ice floe in Scandinavia (very briefly), and done a lot of outdoors swimming in chilly but less freezing temperatures. If I ended up in that icy water for any length of time/in a situation where I couldn't quickly get circulation going again, I'd still suffer from hypothermia and risk damage to extremities.

There is a good reason to get young people used to swimming in moderately chilly water and that is that you are less likely to panic if you fall in. But it won't help you in close-to-zero temperatures.

My brother was a trawlerman in Scandinavia; he now works on the lifeboats. If you fall in in winter and don't immediately get pulled out, you die. They all know that.

DerektheWonderdog · 15/09/2019 20:12

I fell into the penguin pool at London Zoo when I worked there. I was in the Daily Express 🙄 🐧

silverystream · 15/09/2019 20:12

Interesting, cory. I think there must be some degree of resilience built up, though. Either that or Wim Hof really is superhuman!

bruffin · 15/09/2019 20:19

I dont think it would help.
People who go in cold water are somewhat mentally prepared for the cold. They know what they are doing
Falling into the water accidentally is a shock in itself on top of the cold water.
