To think everyone should accustom themselves to cold water

It has been quite fashionable in certain circles to take ice baths / cold water baths or showers. Stuff about health benefits and autophagy and reducing inflammation etc.

But beyond this I think it is a really good idea because most drownings occur due to cold water shock. Yet people can get accustomed to sitting baths full of ice cubes! I just watched a thing about Alaska wherby someone fell in icy water and was pulled out pretty quickly. They said if they didn't act quick he would lose his fingers! Yet Wim Hof dove under the ice and swam underwater and I think holds a world record for this. Isn't it a good idea to start taking cold water baths in order to build up resilience?

I think so and take a cold water bath everyday. Cold tap water doesn't even feel that cold after a while.

What do you think?

Ah yes, I agree OP. I heard a lot of people die of anaphylactic shock due to nut allergies, so I've taken to sitting in a bath of mixed nuts every night to build up a tolerance, just in case.

Strangely enough there has been research showing nut exposure in microscopic controlled doses has reversed some people's nut allergies,

I throw myself off my horse regularly to build up resistance for when I accidentally fall off...

silverystream · 15/09/2019 19:00

The doses been built up slowly over time, I forgot to say.

Well stunt people do learn how fall correctly somehow...

I’ve reached mid 40s without accidentally falling into any water at all apart from maybe a puddle so I will pass

helpfulperson · 15/09/2019 19:03

not the cold baths but everyone should experience sudden immersion into cold water at least once in a safe environment. Most drowning is because people try to swim and panic when they can't breath whereas actually what you need to do is just lie back and float as your body gets used to the cold. Once you have experienced this once it is never so scary again and significantly increases yours survival chances.

When I did gymnastics our coach would regularly roll us off the beam so we'd learn to fall safely and not break our arms (it started after a girl broke her arm)

silverystream · 15/09/2019 19:07

Thank you helpful. I have heard that. I think cold water acclimatisation will probably help too, though.

I regularly jump off objects, starting with pavements & low walls, moving on to more ambitious items like garage roofs & trees. Soon, I will be able to withstand a fall from a plane

I’m grinning so much at how much this amuses me 😂

Mitebiteatnite · 15/09/2019 19:09

I genuinely only have cold showers because my skin reacts to hot or even warm water. I break out in hives.

I reckon I'd be fine if I fell into an ice hole.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/09/2019 19:10

Nah, I just never go near cold water

Works for me

silverystream · 15/09/2019 19:13

Really? You're missing out! Walks by the river, swimming in the sea, boats...

Jack Dawson would heartily agree with you, OP.

When the big day came, that fucker was READY.

I've read this thread while practising holding my breath.

Remember when you were a kid and you could hold your breath for ages?

I'm panicking now with lungs full of air after 10 seconds.

I'll consider the cold bath OP.

Yeah, I love the fact that since I have the stamina and cold resistance (not cold proof - wear appropriate clothing folks!) I can explore so much of nature than I could otherwise. I believe that separating ourselves from nature ALL THE TIME makes you sick in mind and body.

PuffHuffle5 · 15/09/2019 19:16

Nope.

UnravellingThreads - that made me laugh so much, my hubby came to find out what was wrong ( I rarely laugh out loud). Thank you for making my evening Grin

Then surely you need to start gradually increasing the temperature of your showers, in case you ever accidentally fall into a warm bath and go into anaphylaxis?

Huggybear16 · 15/09/2019 19:20

@MINItrawler was joking (I laughed)

Hoppinggreen · 15/09/2019 19:20

I try to regularly taunt rattlesnakes in the hope that they bite me and I build up immunity to their venom
As I live in a reasonably large town in Yorkshire it’s not really working out for me so far.

Huggybear16 · 15/09/2019 19:21

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername makes an excellent point

ISmellBabies · 15/09/2019 19:24

I pissed myself at Dorothy Perkins, how are people not getting the joke?

I started getting myself immune to tiger attacks by getting bigger and bigger cats to nibble my limbs. I lost a leg to a lynx last week so I think it's probably safe to visit the zoo now. Can't be too careful.

WanderingMind · 15/09/2019 19:24

Grin some very funny comments!

DoctorAllcome · 15/09/2019 19:25

“Cold tap water doesn't even feel that cold after a while.”

That’s because your extremities go numb.

I think with global warming, we are more likely to face Death Valley conditions than fall into ice water, so I stick my head in my oven for a couple hours a day.

silverystream · 15/09/2019 19:26

Seriously, though people do learn to live alongside wild cats, snakes and other dangerous creatures.
