Fjallraven, Arc'teryx and Patagonia if you want both practicality and looks. I live in outdoor gear, I spend most of my free time hiking in the mountains (Canadian Rockies). They're all pricey but you pay for the quality and design.

These aren't waterproof but highly recommended: www.fjallraven.co.uk/fjallraven-womens-abisko-trekking-tights-w-navy-f89586/?sku=7323450305512

Also have both of these and wear a lot:

fjcanada.ca/vidda-pro-trousers-regular.html

l wear these for hiking as well as climbing. They're pretty much indestructible: arcteryx.com/gb/en/shop/womens/gamma-ar-pant

Wear these a lot for fast hiking/running in cold weather: arcteryx.com/gb/en/shop/womens/trino-tight

These are a good lightweight option from Patagucci Smile: eu.patagonia.com/gb/en/product/womens-quandary-hiking-pants-regular/55416.html?dwvar_55416_color=FGE&cgid=womens-pants-jeans-hiking#tile-1=&start=1&sz=24

For summer/shoulder season hiking I often wear Lululemon workout tights. I have them in various lengths from just below knee to ankle. They're second-skin comfortable and look good. I bought these recently and they're lush: www.lululemon.co.uk/p/women-pants/All-The-Right-Places-Pant-II/_/prod6750010?rcnt=0&N=7tkZ1z13ze2&cnt=11&color=LW5AZTS_039899

I WOuld just put tights or leggings under my normal trouser for cold conditions. Cheaper if it’s a rare occurance

NotMeNoNo · 16/09/2019 21:35

It's a conspiracy
There are a few slim leg stretch trousers and leggings out there now but there are 100x more baggy man fit zip infested navy blue/grey efforts to wade through.

I must be the clumsiest walker every but really I prefer to tuck my leggings into my socks so they don't get muddy. If you do that with baggy leg trousers you look a real dork, I have photos to prove it. I usually wear "normal" trousers or running leggings for walking now, with thermals if needed.

I read another thread where someone who had worked in sportswear design said they had no idea about the practicalities of what they were designing, just re hashed last season's stuff in new colours. Since then I've just assumed walking trousers are designed by the clueless.

AliciaQuays · 16/09/2019 22:01

I want low rise, wind and bramble resistant trousers that make me look like a normal human. Maybe some stretch but those Wah back looked too tight. Work with walking boots

I love my craghoppers. I’ve got two identical black pairs. They dry so quickly and - scary stuff - they even come with a surprise built-in glasses cleaner in the pocket (which is actually v useful...)

puppymouse · 16/09/2019 22:24

Another vote for Acai. I have a pair of the grey skinnies acaiactivewear.com/pages/skinny-outdoor-trousers-collection

VetOnCall · 16/09/2019 22:24

The Fjallraven Nikka and Vidda Pro trousers linked above fit those criteria. As do these, I like the grey: arcteryx.com/gb/en/shop/womens/creston-ar-pant

AliciaQuays · 16/09/2019 22:25

£120 ?!!! No ducking way

I bought a pair of Acai skinny stretch trousers when they first came out but was disappointed with the quality. They were very small fitting, the material was very thin and the stitching came away on the back pocket. They might be better now as it was quite a while ago, but it put me off them.

TrixieMixie · 16/09/2019 22:37

Açai skinnies are brilliant- flattering and functional. Not cheap

nononever · 17/09/2019 09:13

Fjallraven, Arc'teryx and Patagonia if you are seriously into hiking but if it's a casual interest I personally couldn't justify over a 100 quid for walking trousers.

Alpine trek have a good sale on Arc'teryx www.alpinetrek.co.uk/outlet/brands/arcteryx/for--women/

This thread has given me the motivation to hunt out my merino top and bottoms as we are going to the Highlands next month. However going by October/November in the recent past we haven't needed them. We had glorious weather in the Hebrides last November. We always pack for every eventuality though.

BikeRunSki · 17/09/2019 16:50

Alpkit are not bad actually, but too short fir me -32” inside leg.

AnonAgainToday · 17/09/2019 17:10

Walking trousers? Is that even a thing!!? Confused I've been up many a mountain, mainly in jeans! Smile

nononever · 17/09/2019 17:12

I've been up many a mountain, mainly in jeans!

Presumably not in lashing rain or a blizzard Grin. Nothing worse that soaking wet jeans.

adaline · 17/09/2019 17:34

Walking trousers? Is that even a thing!!

Of course it's a thing!

Jeans in the heat are going to cause a serious case of heat rash. In rain and snow, they'll take hours to dry and leave you with wet and cold a d sore legs.

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/09/2019 17:39

Wet or boggy jeans on an overcast day are the worst, especially if you’ve got a few miles to go. No fun at all.

Serin · 17/09/2019 18:02

The Finnish brand "Halti" make really well fitting pants. The best quality I have found. My ski trousers have lasted about 8 years.

chaplin1409 · 17/09/2019 18:05

Have a look at alpkit
