Blessed a stranger on a bus

Yes on a bus earlier, lady sneezes next to me. I immediately say “bless you” without thinking. I like to think I’m polite!
Then was majorly awkward as she looked at me like I had 3 heads.

Wrong or right thing to do in this scenario! Do I have to accept this is not the done thing anymore! If it ever was!

Satan trying to invade you via a nostril.. What happens if you fart? 😳

Imknackeredzzz · 14/09/2019 23:22

Fair point maybe something got lost in translation. I actually quite enjoy these social norms tbh

I’m athiest and always disperse bless yous to sneezers.

It’s just what you do, isn’t it?

velocitygirl7 · 14/09/2019 23:36

Maybe a Jehovah's Witness? They don't like anyone saying bless you! Hmm

IsobelRae23 · 14/09/2019 23:36

I always say bless you it’s an automatic response. I’ve never had strangers look at me strangely I’ve only ever had a ‘thank you’.

IsadoraQuagmire · 14/09/2019 23:38

I always do.

Imknackeredzzz · 15/09/2019 07:21

I was appearing in court. The interpreter sneezed and I interrupted my own submissions to say "bless you". I was like, "Oops, was I supposed to do that?"

Saltisford · 15/09/2019 07:49

I really don’t like it.
Firstly, I have this weird way of sneezing that I can’t control where I do about ten sneezes in a row and I hate it when attention is drawn to it.

Secondly, I’m non-religious so I think it’s just a bit weird! I’ve not been brought up to say it either.

cantfindname · 15/09/2019 08:17

@gigildid you must never say 'thank you' if someone blesses you or you kill a fairy!!

Imknackeredzzz · 15/09/2019 08:23

Socky puppet! Ha ha they did make me laugh!

I’ve sneezed in public twice recently and both times got a “Bless you!” For one of them I didn’t even see the speaker, just heard a disembodied voice.
I think it’s a nice bit of human connection in a frenetic and sometimes harsh world.

Letsdoanamechangeagain · 15/09/2019 08:42

Im a fairly dyed in the wool atheist and I always say "bless you" when someone sneezes.

I associate it with a generic response to a sneeze rather than any religious connections.

I did always like the idea that if you didn't say it demons would possess the sneeze and steal your soul though Grin

I think you are ok to carry on with things, without worrying about it Smileif it was me you had said Bless You to, I would certainly have said thank you. Are you meant to thank the person?

My 12 year old always says "Bless Me" after he sneezes, has done it for years. He was amazed that a teacher gave him a detention warning at school for him doing it. I told him the teacher was being a knob and not to worry about it.
