To ask if any of you got braces as an adult

I have always had one of my top front teeth noticeably protrude in front of the other and have learnt to live with it but avoid taking pictures and showing my teeth. I am now considering getting braces and would like to know the cost, effectiveness and length of time you had to use them. I live in Outer London if anyone can recommend a dentist. Tia

I was 26. Best thing I EVER did was to have my gawd awful smile fixed. Gave me so much more confidence. I smile in photos. Brilliant. I didn’t realise how depressed I had become until after.
Only thing I regret is the idiot dentist didn’t give me the wax to take home to put over the lumpy fixings as required to stop my gums being shredded. Make sure you get that (if the fixings are still lumpy these days). Good luck

Windydaysuponus · 14/09/2019 19:20

Fixed ones at 47!! 7 months on and no regrets.
North East - used own dental practice. Charger NHS rate. £1500. Payable in instalments.
Saw results in 2 weeks!

WifOfBif · 14/09/2019 19:22

I did, best thing I’ve done.

Fixed braces for just over a year, paid in monthly instalments.

PhilippaFawcett · 14/09/2019 19:24

I have braces now (aged 47). Will take around 18 months and cost about £3600, payable in monthly instalments (for tooth coloured train track braces). If you are in SW London Richmond Orthodontics are very good. Not really enjoying having the braces but think it will be worth it. Not painful after the first few days but I am very conscious of them and avoiding smiling. But it is only 18 months.

Cailinnua · 14/09/2019 19:24

Can’t recommend a dentist, but would definitely recommend getting it done. I was 35 and am so pleased I did it. I wore fixed braces for almost two years, the time flew and I am delighted with the results.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 14/09/2019 19:24

Im about to get them

Nearly 5k

Will have them on for 18months/2 years 😩

Putoutmoreflags · 14/09/2019 19:28

I had fixed braces as a teen and they worked wonders. Buggering teeth have now moved and need them again. I’m coming up to forty but I think it’s worth it and using own practice, paying in instalments.

longtimelurkerfirsttimeposter · 14/09/2019 19:28

Yes, got a voucher from Groupon. 1500 for fixed tooth coloured braces. Took top ones off after 6 months, bottom after 9 months. Totally worth it. I too had one protruding tooth at the top and its made such a difference.

Sparklesocks · 14/09/2019 19:31

Yes, in my late 20s. I had braces as a teen but then as an adult my two front teeth moved to create a gap. It wasn’t noticeable at first and I didn’t mind a little gap, but it got bigger and my other teeth started moving as a result so I decided to get braces. I also didn’t feel as confident smiling with teeth in photos.

I had one train track style brace across the front of my teeth, it was £1200 for a metal brace or £1400 for ceramic so I opted for ceramic as they were a bit more subtle, and £200 seemed like a small increase as I was already paying a large sum. I paid £500 upfront and the rest in monthly instalments which really helped spread the cost.

It was fine, ended up wearing them for a year. They hurt slightly after semi regular appointments for tightening but never more than a dull ache.

I never felt embarrassed about it, most people barely noticed. And when I came across other adults with braces it was like being in a little club! (A waiter once gave my a free cocktail in a brunch place as we had chatted about our braces). I find it’s quite common nowadays, I only really noticed how many others had them when I had them too.

I’m over the moon with the result, my teeth are perfectly straight and I’m confident smiling in pictures after years of self consciously. The timing was perfect as I was a bridesmaid at my best friend’s wedding so could small properly in her photos.

A great investment, I do have to wear a plastic retainer at night to stop them moving again but it’s fine, just part of my routine now and I have a little case for it if I’m travelling. I got them done and an orthodontist in Kent/SE London.

I got Invisalign last year and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. My front two teeth were wonky and overlapped. It was my biggest insecurity, I hated smiling for photos and noticed it every time I looked in the mirror.

I feel like a completely different person after my Invisalign. Not to sound like a walking ad, but I don’t stop smiling now.

I got my Invisalign in August and they were off by February. It went by so quickly. I had to change my Invisalign weekly, so I noticed a difference really soon into the treatment.

It cost just under £4000 and was worth every single penny. I know at my dentist traditional braces were a bit cheaper. Not sure if you’re interested in Invisalign or just a traditional fixed brace, but thought I’d mention it as my experience was so positive.

gabsdot45 · 14/09/2019 19:33

My husband got braces a few years ago aged 45. He has always been very self conscious about his teeth. He wore the top brace for almost a year and the bottom one for 6 months.
They made an amazing difference to his teeth and to his self confidence. His only regret is that he didn't get them years ago.

Daffodil2018 · 14/09/2019 19:34

I'm another person with a hugely positive Invisalign experience. £4K and worth every penny. Graham Tinkler at BUPA Dental is the best in the business.

EauDeResistance · 14/09/2019 19:38

Got my fixed brace a year ago at age 47. Was on for 8 months. Hands down the best money I ever spent. I can't stop smiling and my confidence has improved massively.

loveskaka · 14/09/2019 19:42

I was 21, and would do it again (29) so worth it x

Boofay · 14/09/2019 19:52

I'm 38 and I've just had Invisalign. Paid £2800 to fix my teeth. I had a gap in the front middle and a few were a little crooked. I'm so happy with them.

rumpusboo · 14/09/2019 20:32

It all seems really positive. Thank you

Had mine done at 40, top and bottom with Invisalign, and whitening as well. Then I had permanent fixed retainers put on the back so they don't show. Altogether it cost the best part of £4K.

Worth every penny.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/09/2019 20:52

I had mine as a teen, but I know loads of people who got them as adults and all of them were so happy they did. My grandmother got them when she was 54 and was thrilled with the results.

My kids had them as teens and had the clear brackets and tooth coloured wire. Honestly, unless you are right up close, they are nearly invisible. I would definitely recommend them.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 14/09/2019 20:56

Just nearly finished with Invisalign, very happy with results. No regrets here either.

Poetryinaction · 14/09/2019 21:06

I did and regret it.
I got 6 month smiles. I was drawn to it as I wanted a quick fix. They don't remove teeth or fix back teeth, and said I'd be an ideal candidate as I had a perfect bite but crossed front teeth.
I paid £2750 for top and bottom white braces plus whitening and retainers. They talked me into the bottom ones as it was only £250 extra. They didn't explain how much more awkward it is with both, and much harder to eat.
As they removed no teeth to make space, the space was created by making the top teeth flare out. Now they protrude and are more obvious, and I have an overbite which affects eating and speaking slightly.
The fixed retainers on the bottom snapped so I took them off. I hate the fixed retainers but the removable ones are worse.
I complained and got all my money back, but I am still not happy with my smile and not willing to have braces again.
In retrospect I would pay more and have longer treatment with a proper orthodontist.

DrizzleKicks · 14/09/2019 21:27

I just got my braces off two weeks' ago!

I had fixed ceramic braces for two years to fix crowding and a large overbite. I needed teeth extracted first. It cost £4000 from a top orthodontist.

The results are incredible.

Braces are a nightmare, I won't lie. But for me, totally worth it.

Aprinceinapaupersgrave · 14/09/2019 21:35

I have them now! Mid 40s. Was supposed to be 9 months but dentist says they'll be off after 6 months as it's gone so well. I have fixed white braces. The first week was hard. It was painful, sore and difficult to eat but after that I've had no issues. But even after the 6 week wire changed. My worst sticking out tooth which has made me self conscious for years moved into place after four weeks. Four weeks?!!! I couldn't believe it. It's cost me £3000 and I went with my own (private) dentist. I will have wires behind my top and bottom front teeth after the braces come off to stop them returning. It's been so easy to look after them. I am so glad I did it.

Aprinceinapaupersgrave · 14/09/2019 21:37

But even after the 6 week wire changed
Should say NOT even after the 6 week wire change.

MeakTiger · 14/09/2019 21:40

Yes, age 42/43. 12 months, top brace only, fixed train tracks but clear not silver. £3100.

Worth every penny!

Lellochip · 14/09/2019 21:44

My front two overlapped too, I had an Inman aligner (removable retainer-style brace) for about 4 months, don't regret it at all.

If it's just your front teeth I'd recommend looking into the Inman - it's only good for cosmetic fixes of the front 6, but can be bit cheaper/a lot quicker if you're a suitable case
