To ask if any of you got braces as an adult

I have always had one of my top front teeth noticeably protrude in front of the other and have learnt to live with it but avoid taking pictures and showing my teeth. I am now considering getting braces and would like to know the cost, effectiveness and length of time you had to use them. I live in Outer London if anyone can recommend a dentist. Tia

My sister, late 40s, £2500 ish, Invisiline.

The whole process took nearly a year, excellent care, they look great but were not bad to begin with imo.

She is very happy.

Oblomov19 · 14/09/2019 21:51

Can't understand the price spectrum. Why some so cheap and some so expensive?
I want them so very very badly but can't afford £4K and in Surrey I can't get it cheaper anywhere close by. Sad

strawberry2017 · 14/09/2019 21:51

Had mine at 24, cost me £3000, I got ceramic on top and metal on bottom, took almost 2 years but well worth it!

Reallynowdear · 14/09/2019 21:53

Invisalign, autocorrect

Genevieva · 14/09/2019 21:55

There is an American mail order service that claims to be 40% cheaper than Invisalign that has just launched in the UK. Their shop is in Birmingham (I saw the advert). No idea whether you actually have to go to the shop or whether you can do it all remotely. It is called Smile Direct Club. I can't recommend it because I know nothing about it, but the advertisement looked good. It was called something like Smiles Direct Club.

Genevieva · 14/09/2019 21:55

I wrote that twice - I am tired. Smile or Smiles. I can't remember.

MaryShelley1818 · 14/09/2019 21:56

I had a fixed brace in my mid-20s. Worked brilliantly but within a few years my teeth had started to move back.
I paid for 4 veneers on the top front and the result is incredible.

ComeOnGordon · 14/09/2019 22:02

Another happy customer here. Before I always hated how my teeth looked in photos & now I’m so much more confident.

Had a wisdom tooth taken out by my regular dentist & paid about 3000€ for Invisalign type braces top and bottom. They were on for 14 months. Yeah it was a hassle to constantly have to brush my teeth after I ate & it curbed snacking & wine drinking but it was worth all of it

NuttyNutty · 14/09/2019 22:04

Got braces at 38, had to wear them for about 9 months. It was my best investment after my laser eye surgery I can't recommend a dentist but go for it, definitely worth it.

Blubluboo · 14/09/2019 22:07

The reason there are varied prices are because some people have invisaline (plastics invisible) and others have fixed. I found an amazing private dentist nearby and went in wanting invisalign as I was embarrassed about having fixed, he was a top dentist and advised against invisalign. Apparently the only way to permanently move your teeth is to use fixed braces, it also means that he can tweak each tooth as he needed to as each bracket is separate. He could have easily sold me invisalign for 3k (top only!) But he said to give fixed a go. I went for clear brackets and they weren't hugely noticeable. I paid roughly 1.5k and it was the best money I spent. It took 12 months. My advice would be to research a good dentist first and then call up, mine told me rough costs over the phone based on the information I gave him.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 14/09/2019 22:07

I had incognito lingual braces around 10 years ago.

They are full time glued braces that fit to the inside of the teeth so they’re not seen. I wore them for about a year.

So glad I had them. I smile with confidence now. People occasionally comment on my straight teeth.

MrsNacho · 14/09/2019 22:09

I had them at age 30 on the NHS. Best thing I have ever done. Wish I had done it years ago.

To ask if any of you got braces as an adult
Divgirl2 · 14/09/2019 22:13

I had mine as an adult - Damon 3 was the name of them although they were essentially train tracks.

Peter Gascoigne was the dentist but I've just searched him and he has now passed away. So no recommendations on that front unfortunately.

MittsMajuna · 14/09/2019 22:16

Big fat silver train tracks. 2k in total for top & bottom. I paid £100 a month for 20 months.

I wasn't at all worried about people seeing them.
Work in progress Grin

MittsMajuna · 14/09/2019 22:18

I wear a retainer every night BTW.

Smellslikebiscuits · 14/09/2019 22:31

I’ve absolutely loved my Invisalign.
Paul Humber at Simply Smile in Cambridgeshire is brilliant.
He lectures and trains other dentists across the UK on Invisalign so can get a great price.
Includes all your whitening gels as part of the price, and doesn’t charge extra if you end up needing a dozen extra retainers to get the perfect finish.

Smellslikebiscuits · 14/09/2019 22:33

As one of the largest single UK providers of Invisalign we receive a massive 40% price reduction, which we pass on to you. With prices starting at less than the cost of a daily large latte coffee* surely you are worth it.
We quote a fixed price of £3,290 which includes everything you need, we do not believe in quoting a price only for this to escalate by adding the additional sundries that are required.
What is included in the cost?
Free consultation
Diagnosis
X rays
Study models as required
Clincheck computerised treatment planning
Scale and polish of your teeth
Genuine Invisalign® aligners
Refinement Invisalign® aligners as needed to ‘fine tune’ the teeth
Repairs to chipped or worn anterior teeth that are visible in your smile as needed
One set of retainers for your teeth and two spare sets of retainers
Tooth whitening with Boutique Whitening (limit applies)
Supervision of retention for one year after active treatment
Due to the demand of our patients, of whom many travel many miles, we have some extended hours on Saturdays and also some orthodontists offer some weekday early evenings to ensure convenience for our patients.

Flowerbunty · 14/09/2019 22:35

I literally just got braces 2 weeks ago and I am 30. I am so happy that I chose to go to the orthodontist after years of always hiding my teeth!!

Csleeptime · 14/09/2019 23:02

Another for invisalign a few years ago late twenties. Never smiled with mouth open as hated teeth, now I don't worry any more. Worth every penny

sorrythisusernameisinuse · 15/09/2019 00:02

I used to work on Harley street in an Ortho practice and 80% of our patients were adults

rumpusboo · 15/09/2019 00:17

Amazing results @MrsNacho! Thank you all so much for sharing x

Had train tracks and a head cage for night at 18, teeth were back to overlapping few years later. Got invisalign at 35, took 2 years and 3 grand, they were perfect. Now 45, wonky again. My problem is that there is no space for them to move, but can't have any more teeth removed (already had 6 top taken out). Totally worth it if you have the right mouth, my upper teeth just have no space!!

MittsMajuna · 15/09/2019 08:23

Mac47 Did they put in a fixed retainer or give you a removable one?

I have to put one in every night, else mine would move.

MrsNacho · 15/09/2019 09:34

I wear a retainer every night too, a plastic one. I have to wear it every night for the first year, then every other night for a year and then a few times a week for as long as I want straight teeth.

If I miss a couple of nights I can feel that it's tight when I put it in.

Tigger0902 · 15/09/2019 10:32

I’m in the early stages of getting braces and had the exact same worry. But, as another poster mentioned, a lot of people are having them later on in life that it’s less of a big deal.
I currently have a quad helix in and get tracks in a couple of weeks. Metal ones were never an option for me so it was a toss up between the ceramic and incognito. There was about £1000 price difference between the two and after speaking to my dentist friend I went for the ceramic. I was considering the incognito because I was conscious of people seeing a 30 year old with braces, but I opted for ceramic instead. I’ve only had the quad helix in for about 6 weeks and noticed a huge difference already. I’ll have the fixed braces for around 18 months so excited to see final results!
Good luck! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made, even when my teeth feel a bit sore and I can’t eat certain food, I just think about the epic smile I’ll have after!
